A great way to turn you Hella 500 into a HID torch that will turn night to day. I have 6 HID hella 500 on my 4Runner with it on its like driving during the day.

Nice work and a good explanation on how to proceed. The only thing I would like to have seen is a before and after light pattern display and maybe a measurement of the light output at 25' - 50' - 100'. I'd also recommend using a hole saw instead of a spade bit. The spade bit if pushed to drill to fast can catch and crack the plastic. Again, Nice Job !

If your not using a drill press do not use the drill bit this guy's uses. I ended up shattering the plastic Housing when drilling with this type of bit. Use a step bit instead.

Hella 500 are relatively cheap used. I pick up mine for about $40 a pair and a $38 HID kit so $80 for a pretty bright light

I’ve done an led retro fit. Although led is brighter and takes up less energy than halogen, the housing is not made to focus led light so it turned into a flood type light as opposed to spotlight with halogen. I would think it’s the same for hid. I switched back to super white halogen.

I retro fitted my 2003 Chrysler T&C AWD with LEDs. I had same problem as you describe. The Chrysler takes a 9007 halogen retrofitting to an LED produces the flood light effect as you describe. This caused me to do some research by comparing the 9007 halogen lamp to the LED lamp I found the position of the LED chips were NOT the same distance from the base of the housing infact they were about an 1/8" SHORTER. I then decided to try a different LED manufacturer I purchased a set of Sealight 9007's. To my amazement the Sealights had their LED chip position about 1/8" LONGER than the halogen lamps. The comparison was dramatic all of a sudden the headlights had the typical "horizontal cutoff" that you see on foreign head light manufacturers i.e. like HELLA or BOSCH. Because the LED's draw less current the BCM (Body Control Module) is not functioning properly it is not throwing any codes just the dimmer tiller is not working properly. I have purchased a "Ballast Resistor" dongol to plug in between the lamp assembly and the chassis loom the resistors will draw the correct current and the BCM will then function properly. I hope this info is of benefit to you and everyone else, be sure to readjust your headlights so as not to blind "oncoming drivers" it is nice to truly be able to see the road.
