at 2:49. I did not think about this much when I was a kid but between Tzital and Motal I think Motal was the smartest one of the two. he knew the rule of the game (if you get my drift) he knew he had to prove to Tevia that he can financially support his daughter which is why he wanted to wait until he got his new sewing machine to ask Tevia for his daughter's hand. Tzital also had a point. I can see both sides of the argument. Tzital was afraid that if her father agreed on a husband for her before Motal asked her father for her hand it would be too late.

My maternal grandfather was a poor tailor. Sadly, he cheated on my grandmother, who was terminal with leukaemia. My mother and my aunt shunned him from the family as a result. Him and the rest of my grandparents suffered greatly through the Holocaust in concentration camps and rarely knew any happiness. Fortunately for the next generations, we've all benefited from the sacrifices they made to give us a chance for a good life away from Europe.

May the Lord protect and defend you. May He always shield you from shame. May you come to be in Israel a shining name. May you be like Ruth and like Esther. May you be deserving of praise. Strengthen them, Oh Lord, and keep them from the strangers' ways. May God bless you and grant you long lives. May the Lord fulfill our Sabbath prayer for you. May God make you good mothers and wives. May He send you husbands who will care for you. May the Lord protect and defend you. May the Lord preserve you from pain. Favor them, Oh Lord, with happiness and peace. Oh, hear our Sabbath prayer. Though not Jewish, I cannot help but pay homage to the beautiful prayer scene. It shows the sacred tradition of the Sabbath, its timeless call to gather around the table, light candles, pray, sing, and share a meal in a spirit of fellowship and worship. It shows the centrality of family to the Sabbath, just as the Sabbath sits at the centre of the Ten Commandments, with glory to God foremost and encompassing of all. As part of the prayers, the husband blesses his wife, the parents bless their children, and the family, together, bless the God of the Universe. It is so pure and lovely, as conveyed here, a sanctified, ancient observance given by God to His chosen people and preserved through time as no other.

Man was not made for the Sabbath, but the Sabbath for man. The Sabbath points to the Lord Jesus Christ, the author and finisher of our faith and the eternal rest that is found ONLY in Him, by God's grace. Jesus said, "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." Matthew 11:28 Rest in Christ, always.

I sense in this scene the quiet power of God moving in his people. The strength of His love for His people and how that is a model to be shared and lived by the family. The strength of a people is in how the children are raised and the respect taught and shown from husband and wife. God is the head of the husband he is the head of his wife and children. She is his crowning glory the treasure. The husband loves her and honors her and she him . Tears

My favorite scene in the movie. Starting with the typical jabbering of a husband and wife, showing the humanity of Tevye and his wife, Golde. And, the timidity of a suitor of the oldest daughter in asking for her hand in marriage. Then, as the family quickly collects at the table, a lone oboe sets the tone of the gathering. The song, sung exclusively by the parents, is a beautiful expression of the mother and father for the children's good fortune, a meaningful and solemn blessing of the Sabbath tradition. As a father of daughters, one of whom is already married, my heart cannot contain my emotion when Tevye's sings, "May He send you husbands who will care for you." God, I pray that You will grant my daughters those kinds of husbands, there are so very few of these kind and nurturing men in our current day and time. And, finally, the climax slowing building in volume, showing the entire village celebrating together. This is more than mere sentimentality, it is cinematic depth of feeling matched by few.

I was in this play when I was in high school as Lazar Wolf the butcher. This play and movie has been one of the most meaningful expression of God's love in my life. I grew up and still am a lover of God, but not of religion.

I'm not of the Jewish faith. But once I was laid up after surgery and decided I was going to watch the movie. I was hoping to learn about their way of life. After watching, I found it to be an enlightenment. Not only did I enjoy the movie, I had a new respect for their ways and traditions.

Forgive me.....this coming from an imposing Gentile. This movie has such an important place in my heart. Irregardless of it's Jewish ties....it imposes reality upon my heart. Is it so different from us all? The common themes within and without seem to tug on all the heartstrings of all of us.We aren't really different at all, is what I believe. I'm Teyve, I can so relate......God bless you all, I feel this Fiddler on the Roof within me............Just another Gentile under God

As I write this, I see that there have been over 1 million views and over 600 comments. And I wish to add my own thanks for posting this most beautiful piece. As we are all captured by its beauty, I wonder how many listeners recognize that this enchanting melody is the same as the famous song from early in the show, "If I Were A Rich Man", but performed at about half time. The entire production is a work of genius, with universal themes transcending any single religion.

I have 4 daughters! This prayer is for them! The dynamics between Topol and Golda reminds me of the relationship between my wife and I! We are Gentiles, except perhaps my wife! For, through God’s Grace, I have found out that my wife’s family has a tiny branch that is related to the exile from Babylon! My wife is Persian, but, the greatest blessing is that she is European Jewish, through her father! She is my Hadassah, me, a Gentile! I feel extraordinary blessed!
