Personally, I like to categorise generations in 7-year increments 1st: until 2005 2nd: 2005 - 2012 (from apx Super Junior's debut) 3rd: 2012 - 2019 (from apx EXO's debut) 4th: 2019 - 2026 (from apx Itzy/TXT's debut) The speed at which we've been jumping from generation to generation has been making absolutely no sense to me, and even for the 4th gen, people have been retroactively adding more and more groups to it which I find pretty stupid.

The 5th gen was introduced PURELY because WakeOne claimed ZeroBaseOne to be "the first 5th gen group". I distinctly remember that, and how people went "damn that's kinda ridiculous" but just WENT with it. 7 year increments make sense to me because it's (currently) the natural "life span" of a group and would go from approximately the debut of the first group of that generation - to about the point when their contracts expire. I could care less what most people think if it makes no sense to me

Regarding the Jang Da Ah and Wonyoung situation.... IMO outside of really senior positions in a company (where the right underlings can paper over the deficits and handle day-to-day operations), nepotism can only get you so far. Yes, it might open doors initially but unless you can deliver, people won't keep you. After all, you're not the only person with special connections. If special treatment/opportunities are being given to you because of who you're related to, those same special treatment/opportunities are going to be given to other connected people too. So, organizations are not short on connected people to grant favors for. What they are need are people who can actually do the job.

The NewJeans, ILLIT, Le Sserafim thing makes no sense because one it was NewJeans’ 2nd time at the Japan Record Awards and they won their 3rd award compared to ILLIT and Le Sserafim who were first timers at the award ceremony. Second NewJeans was nominated for the Grand Prix for the 2nd consecutive year so naturally they were placed near the front and center. Third NewJeans was wearing white so no matter where they were they were gonna stand out as someone nominated for the biggest award and wearing white they were obviously gonna be placed centered amongst all the other artists who wore some combination of black and other dark clothing. It saddens me that it was one of the biggest award ceremonies in music with all 3 groups performing and winning an award yet no one mentioned that 😀😵‍💫

i wrote about kpop at uni back in 2022, and argued that 5th gen may be the end of "k-pop" before it loses it's identity. the definition of kpop feels to be in limbo rn, with all the "zpop" groups and american ventures. imo, 6th gen as you said will be when kpop comes home to 2nd gen style. another way to mark it would be events. if 4th gen are groups that debuted after BTS (and blackpink) finding mainstream success, 5th gen are groups that debuted without having to compete with their group activities. 6th gen for me will be whatever aesthetics eventually come into trend as a reaction to BTS' next group release. HOWEVER there may be a much sooner reaction to new jean's situation, be it another group trying to take their place or the girls themself reinventing their look. i can see why people would call this 6th gen, but i think it's more like gen 5.5

Crazy how Gen 2 was like what... 7 years long? and ever since then the periods of "which gen are we at?" have become shorter and shorter and I find it incredibly toxic, because it basically gets rid of those that just started their careers and let's be real... we are experiencing too much of a cookie cutter principle being applied to 99% of the groups that are debuting now anyway, which makes K-Pop quite dull too. I get it it's this "formula" that has worked for a lot of groups and money's the goal, but where is the creativity, the individuality at? I find it funny seeing more and more dance challenges popping up with songs like Shanghai Romance or the likes. Songs that aren't even certified retro songs, suddenly getting a second chance at life, yet a lot of the newer groups aren't really willing to go a lil crazy. Do I sound like a boomer? Yes, but let's be real... how many songs, concepts or twists can you name that have happened in the last two-ish generations that had a significant impact on K-Pop next to... Cosmosy is actually a Japanese group so I’m confused why they labeled them Kpop? They DO sing some in Korean but they’re primarily singing in Japanese and share things in Japanese first and foremost. Plus their actual company is NTT Docomo which is a Japanese company.

By trying to market them as 6th gen, they've opened the group up to criticsm of people pushing back against only that. They're practically begging people to call the concept derivative of other groups. I recognize that it has Japanese horror influences, but it's hard to see past the massive similarities to other very current, very popular concepts. Cosmosy is as 5th-gen as it gets, and if this isn't purely noise marketing that they're going to drop after debut, they've invited a ton of people to start fights saying, "This is nothing new!" (Personally, I can't help but see it as smashing together of a retro-nostalgia school concept (of which New Jeans triggered a resurgence) particularly in the cinematography and color grading, as well as set and part of the styling, and Aespa's cyber-futuristic debut trilogy concept, mostly in the narrative and conceit of the MV, and the sound of the song-- that bombastic, metallic sort of production (which obviously Aespa didn't invent, but it's hard to not compare the two when they're also being pursued by and fighting digital monsters from another world)-- and some of the styling. I'd even go so far as to say there's also a little bit of Illit adventure-weirdcore thrown in, but maybe that's a stretch.) I wanna be clear that I like the song and MV, I think they're cool and well-made, I just think it's silly that the marketing is so focused on how ~different~ they are when it's influence all the way down.

As for being centered, you can clearly see that the shot of the groups is not the full stage; it's only the right side of the stage. That circle you mentioned is the center of the stage and there are more idols out of shot on the left. So, yes, they are absolutely more centered. The argument then is whether or not them being very clearly in the center, which they are, actually means anything.

I feel like Wonyoung's sister most probably got the lead role because of Wonyoung. However, it is important to note that if she proves herself to be a great actress, the public will know her name because of talent. I think that having someone to push you in the right direction towards more popularity is not bad, as long as you justify the push with your skills. Often people don't get popular not because they are not talented and skilled, but because they got lost in the crowd of skilled and talented people. Sometimes it's hard to recognize a talent unless someone else shines on the person in order for them to fully show their talents.
