This is a remake of an old build, due to that build being unreleased. The secret place wasn't in the original build, so as the basement. You can see the original build in an old announcement trailer.

The country lane area represents the area in Alpha 1. In one of the nightmares you could see the neighbour enter his basement but then a car crashes and a wheel goes to the neighbours living room and finished the nightmare. It seems the neighbour can time travel to before the player arrived and kill him by using a lamp post

Theory: after pre alpha man got buried in alpha 1 hes been starved and dehydrated for a while and he started hallucinating and having nightmares about the neighbor, an alternate reality where the neighbor's house was different, after he got into the basement in his dream/hallucination he got chased by the neighbor in his hallucination and in a panic tried to hide in a closet but it transported him to the nightmare realm where it was just him and the neighbor and once the neighbor finally caught him he woke up or he stopped hallucinating only to realize he was still trapped in the coffin. He probably died a few years before alpha 2

There is a theory for the hello neighbor prototype-alpha 1in which the player actually died when the electric stand thing fell on their car, the neighbor's house is their coma, and in alpha 1 cutscene the car was actually the player's car, and the basement is the exit to the coma, but he neighbor closes the door meaning you died.

​@mrflimflam_isfake it's not really confirmed what the story is but here's my interpretation: the player was driving down the countryside when he crashes his car and goes into a coma where he has a nightmare where the game takes place and he has to escape his coma where if the neighbor catches him then he will die which is represented by him being buried but if he lives and fixes the pole that he crashed into he lives.

Basically every Alpha or HN build has a story from the Screenshots. Starting from the teaser, it is that you are driving the yellow car to the house from Alpha 1 or Pre-Alpha. A telephone pole falls on your car, then it sends you in a coma and you wake up at the neighbor's house. BTW, the Prototype - Pre-Alpha - Alpha 1 story is revealed. It turns out in those 3 versions the neighbor had some books that said Faust. Faust is a person who sold his soul to the devil for wealth and power. Neighbor did the same, but for a golden apple. In Alpha 3 he is crying because the deal he made with the Devil was priceless to him then. And "The Thing" or the black demon in the full game was the Devil and the person standing behind the neighbor in one of the Prototype promos
