This is not new news. It’s been like that many decades ago. It is not just the luxury brands but all price ranges. Back in the 1970’s to 1990’s, NYC had a huge garment market. Immigrants were exploited. everyone turned a blind eye. No one cared for their well being. Yes it was sweatshop environment. My mother worked in a sweatshop in NY in the 1980’s. No AC, poor lighting, sometimes 7 days a week including holidays because workers were paid per piece not per hour or salaried. No healthcare, no meals provided. It was exploitation.

Many many years ago when i was in China shopping with my family, one of the shops took us to the "back rooms" where they had counterfeits and the people there said they also worked for these luxury houses. Thats how they get the patterns and sometimes even the canvas/leather pieces and were ablebto source them to make the counterfeits. She told us that the craftsmanship is the same, only difference is not shipped to italy to be stamped. Which really goes to show the huge markup is really for that stamp and the experience. I feel like "luxury" now just means the illusion fantasy for the average people who are willing to pay even after yearly increases. "Luxury" just means they can market themselves better than the smaller businesses and charge 10x for it. Its so sad...

Fashion industry is known for exploiting at all price ranges. Doesn’t matter if the factory is domestic or overseas. They are sweatshops. You would think these big houses will pay them decent. It’s been like that for half a century. Even in the food industry when you dine at a Michelin star where you pay $200 for your entree. The workers who prepare the food and clean up for you get paid terribly and they work in unsafe conditions. People always feel bad for the waiters and the waitresses but they often forget the ones who peel those potatoes, chop the meat etc. they don’t get appreciated and they are forgotten.

Yes, for most brands it has always been like this. But so far there have mainly been journalistic investigations in Tuscany where many of the Italian companies have been sold to the Chinese community which is very present in the area. It seems that the only ones that produce internally are LV and Hermes, the others rely on external suppliers. It amazes me that Armani doesn't monitor because he has always professed to be very sensitive to social and environmental issues.

There is no reason for a handbag to cost more than $200. The “luxury” industry targets the young, naive, innocent, single and shallow minded women who gets brainwashed by their marketing campaigns. Let’s be honest, most of us were victims because we were young once. I was a victim who fell for the trap. Luckily I have only purchased a few items 15 years ago. Ever since turning 40, I have slowly come to realize what are the things that are worth spending on. For example, kids summer camp or a Disney vacation which is basically the cost of a Chanel classic flap. Unless money is not an issue for you, I only have enough to choose one option. I think it’s more important to spend $6k on summer camp to give myself a mental break in the summer. Another option is to invest in a mutual fund. Whatever gains I have in a year or two could be used on a vacation.

Thanks for sharing your perspective. To be fair, some of us can afford all of the above - the vacations, the kids’ summer camp, and a nice little slice of luxury for those who enjoy it. Luxury means something different to everyone. It’s quite personal how we choose to spend our money. However for those of us who enjoy luxury fashion, when news like this comes out, most of us are quite turned away. And I think consumers nowadays want to make educated purchases. We know we’re paying for marketing hype in some cases. But to find out we’re paying for labor abuse and ugliness, that’s another story.

Publicly sold companies like LVMH unfortunately are very prone to using subcontracting labor and their ethical practices are horrifying. Weirdly enough, and as much as it sounds like BS, a lot of these corporations aren’t aware that subcontracting at this level is taking places. The concept is also strange to me, learning that these practices falls thru the cracks in general…especially if the company cares about their image the way they do. It’s puzzling and unsettling that these things happen somehow unbeknownst to the staff where supposedly their job is to coordinate production (or finances etc). Since you’re a reader, I recommend “Fashionopolis” by Dana Thomas if you haven’t read it yet. It’s explained in the book that these subcontracting practices are wildly common. There’s a lot of expose in the book at the beginning of it. Thank you for sharing the video. I think this will give a lot of luxury consumers some food for thought (for those who care).

This issue with Dior has really had me quite upset. I just wanted to share my thoughts, after having contemplated since watching this video. I saw another video on this Dior issue. I am so disgusted. Although Dior has a process in place to keep them legally “safe”, I absolutely believe they knew what was going on. I feel lied to with regard to the “quality” Dior sells us on in the boutiques, and frankly embarrassed. Not inspecting the factories that manufacture their goods is criminal. It is turning a blind eye. A bit of a “don’t ask, don’t tell” situation. Another thing that weighs on my mind is the super fake issue…. Wouldn’t it be interesting to discover the super fakes aren’t fake at all, but are manufactured in the same horrible work houses, with the same materials, but just don’t get the actual serial code on them? Yes I feel you. I think many of us feel quite appalled. There have been talks in the past about how some of the fakes come from actual legit production sites where they produce the real and the fake bags all in the same location or at least with the same workers trained by the brands. Some people are going as far as to say that buying from the brands are the same as buying fakes… but I disagree. At least the legal production sites can be audited, inspected, regulated etc. Perhaps not done well, but at least there is some legal oversight and news like this comes out when authorities discover horrific working conditions. But with the fakes, there is zero legal oversight since they are going outside the law, right? Anyway… it’s really a shame. At the end of the day, this is about poor labor being taken advantage of for the profit of big companies. And how “luxury” marketing is truly mostly hype, which we knew on some level, but this is just yuck.

Clearly the workers work hard and there’s a market for what they produce (probably not at current price). I just hope through labor renegotiation, their working conditions can get better. 53 euros is the labour cost. There are many other costs along the way. There are many factories in countryside Italy with migrant workers, it has been documented for years. Plus Italians will tell you about the corrupted system in their country.

Yes it’s the labor cost. Why is a worker sleeping in the factory around the clock, with removed safety measures, and then getting paid 53 euros for something that will sell for many times more than that? We know marketing and retail overhead costs will add to the overall cost to get the bag into consumer hands, but why is Dior allowing their suppliers to fail inspection audits multiple times and turning a blind eye to these poor working conditions when they can absolutely demand better conditions and pay higher wages by cutting into their massive profits just a little bit.

What bothers me is that Dior especially creates so many videos and visuals of their “artisans” working in their workshops… carefully hand stitching every corner of their bags… if you look at the Dior website, they often highlight behind the scenes of how their bags are made. And then this news comes out - and it’s just the complete opposite of the image they’re putting out there.

I've been using the Good On You brand directory to learn about how sustainable and ethical different brands are. It's sad that the luxury brands typically rate just as low as fast fashion brands. But what I have noticed is that the Kering group brands are a bit higher (on the It's a start -level) than LVMH group brands (on the Not good enough -level). Of course there are many different ways to look and measure the sustainability and ethical practices, so the Good On You ratings are not the final truth, but their directory easy to use and has good coverage and to me seems trustworthy.

No doubt Dior/LVMH was willfully blind. But frankly, it’s possible the suppliers were operating under chinese labour standards that they are used to back home, probably hiring chinese (legal and illegal) immigrants. It’s common for these chinese manufacturers to open up production sites overseas so the products can sport that “made in italy/france” label. In this situation, the chinese suppliers operated under rules that they and their workers were used to back i china, i.e. did not comply with local rules and got caught. Pretty sure LVMH was banking on these suppliers to internally “arbitrage” labour laws to minimize costs.

I’m sick of this all and I’m retired from buying luxury bags. This isn’t acceptable. I know that profits were high, but I buy luxury because I always presumed it came with ethical manufacturing. This happens a lot in apparel manufacturing. A retailer books a style with a manufacturer, and they outsource it to a smaller company for less $$ so that they make more money. Dior or any other company does not always have visibility to unethical practices conducted by their suppliers. They find out often when we do. This behaviour often results in severe penalties, fines, suspension, or breaking the contract. Dior head office does not approve of this they actually are one of the best employers of all the luxury brands. It's the Italian company's fault. They should be audited by Dior, and then surprise audits be conducted every month for several years as this bad behaviour is damaging!! Someone is definitely going to get fired over this.

It’s been in practice for decades. We call it sweatshops in NY. There were so many from 1970’s to 1990’s in the garment district and in Chinatown. We turned a blind eye on the workers’ well being. My mother was in that environment for 15 years. She raised two kids with a sewing machine. She is an expert seamstress but she vows to never teach us how to sew. She needed the job but hated it. It was earning enough to buy canned food or else we become homeless. It was labor exploitation. When Clinton was in office in the early 2000’s, he moved these labor jobs to offshore such as Cambodia, Vietnam, and China.

It’s true that visibility is limited when work is outsourced to smaller suppliers however, a massive company like Dior with LVMH as their parent company would easily make it mandatory for all suppliers to follow strict labor guidelines for best-in-class ethical treatment of their workforce etc. It can be done, but only if it’s made a priority and let’s be honest, the financial incentives are not aligned.

Why are we surprised and by no means is it ok. This kind of stuff is happening in all industries. We need to get our heads out of the sands. The man that breaks apart all luxury brands on KZbin has found that the majority of these luxury brands are making handbags extremely below the real cost of the product. I am sure, many of those other brands will take note of this and clean up their asks, because I believe there are many more who just haven’t been caught.

I feel confident in claiming that most brands, no matter if luxury brands, fast fashion brands or mid-range brands, all or at least most could be accused to exploitation and lack of safety devices. We all know it's about the money, and getting investors the biggest profits. We complain about luxury brands doing this, yet we support by buying cheap fast fashion clothes and goods. These brands, too, have huge problems with paying poor salaries, huge safety issues. We consumers can complain, but, as Hannah says: we all participate in these exploitations. It seems the only way to correct these injustices is to stop buying goods. We are an over-consumption society. Then we use it once and dispose of it, the trash going into landfills in poor and developing nations. It's all horrible.

Very good. can you now make a video about minimum wage in the USA. That sits around 7,25 USD an hour, not enough to sustain on. People in the US need at least 2 or 3 jobs to get bills paid. This really isn’t news, there have been articles for years about the Chinese factories in Prato. It’s not just Dior, although they are the subject of the lawsuit, but it’s been known that the brands outsource much of their work to these factories to increase profits. They do it because it’s much cheaper to do it there.

Thanks for reporting this to us! I actually feel disgusted, €53 euros?!?!?! It’s insane. At my very first job in the fashion industry, I worked in the analytical department. Mock-ups were crazy! We were the official distributor of luxury brands in my home country over 15 years ago. When I saw a mock-up for the first time, I was shocked, but not like this! When I buy luxury, I consciously understand that I am overpaying, but I also believe that part of it goes to ethical production and not mass-market conditions. This is extremely upsetting! I believe that 53 euros example was to show how little the worker gets compensated for constructing a bag that is then sold for thousands. Obviously there are marketing/advertising costs on top, which is probably where a huge part of luxury brands’ budgets go to - celebrity endorsements and such, to keep the hype alive. So the cost to get the bag into the consumer’s hands will be much more than 53 euros but the upsetting part is that Dior/LVMH is pocketing so much of the profits when they could instead be treating their workers and suppliers better, paying them better wages etc. It’s the quintessential corporate greed scenario which is just ugly. I’m with you. On some level, I of course knew that luxury brands were charging a premium for the hype, BUT I assumed that behind the hype was also some decent, ethical practices. Afterall, as I said in the video, “luxury” should also mean class and sophistication, in my mind, this news about Dior feels low class and vulgar. Thanks for your support of the video!

I think if a Dior handbag costs us $2600 , the customers are not buying the quality of the handbag, they are buying Dior. Its the name they are buying. Just like Art. They built the name and reputation for years. For me, a designer can charge us 100 times the price, its up to us to buy it or not. But the company should be able to take care of the workers right. I’ll do some research on Hermes because I haven’t heard anything about them in this light. But you are mistaken with your assumption that I sold my Lady Dior because of this news. I sold it a while back before I knew about any of this. If we sold everything we ever bought that had some human rights violation connected to it, we’d probably all have to go naked for a while.
