Fun fact about the cocaine rats: the study that PSA was based on provided zero mental stimulation for the rats. When the study was recreated but put the rats in an ideal environment with plenty of opportunity for socialization, a small minority of rats used drugs recreationally but did not become dependent or addicted, and none used until death. Long story short: addiction is a consequence of unfit environment

Some drugs are more addictive than others. Also rats may very well have a different body chemistry reaction than humans would, so rat tests aren't 100% demonstrates.of what would happen to humans in identical situations. Drug addiction is a terrible thing, and I'd never risk it by just trying any drugs. Please don't say things that can encourage the dangerous practice of drug abuse.

Well, science has confirmed that the brains of rats had 3X the amount of serotonin in them when the rats died. Evidence: They gave six rats an overdose of anaesthetic and found that serotonin levels in their brains had tripled by the time they died (Neuroscience Letters, DOI: 10.1016/j.neulet.2011.04.051).

The "Long Way Home" one is genuinely the best, because it a) addresses the real issue that not everyone can just "say no" b) focuses on the communities that are most heavily hit by the War on Drugs (which ironically PDFA was a big part of) and c) is genuinely cinematically well-shot, especially for a quick PSA.

The one where the surgeon is high (and still smoking weed) while operating on someone is probably the most outrageous of these ads, mainly because it proposes a scenario that probably wouldn’t happen in real life anyway (no sane hospital would allow one of its doctors to come into work clearly under the influence. I like the ones that encourage parents to be involved in their kids’ lives without encouraging an invasion of privacy. A lot of the addicts I have met started because their parents either abused them or neglected them. If you don’t pay attention to your kid, that’s a problem. If you belittle their interests, that’s a problem.
@BrotherlyBear2 жыл бұрын
My favorite thing about PSAs is the general rule that I've seen, especially in your compilations, that each country's fears are reflected in their PSAs. That's why Australia and New Zealand have the most impactful drunk driving ads, Great Britain and Europe have the most impactful child abuse ads, and the US has the most impactful drug ads. But also, I love how ridiculous most of these are. Clearly, 5 decades of fear mongering PSAs haven't really fixed the problem-but the ones that stick with people the most are those from the affected's POVs. When the audience is forced to feel empathy for addicts and family members, it's clearer that drug issues are not a moral failure. Support for mental, physical, and financial areas goes a long way no matter what. (Also-it's so funny to see that half of these paint meth and crack as drugs that are common problems for the upper middle class)

I have always had mixed feelings for PDFA. The way they usually try to warn kids against drugs are usually either very unrealistic or very problematic (love the ones that make light of SA and slavery guys /sarcasm), but I always thought that their best PSAs are the ones where they use interviews or highlight real stories of people who are struggling with addiction or the friends and family members that were directly effected by it. Plus it's not a bad thing to tell kids early on that there are better alternatives to being cool other than drugs. I'm glad that I can now finally access almost their entire library on KZbin from one of the best channels in the PIF/PSA community.

5:10:39 it was both a shame and a relief to find out the people in "Laura" and "Doug" were actors, because these are seriously some of the saddest PSAs I've ever seen.
@patnewbie21772 жыл бұрын
Nice, ending it with Brain on Drug Policy.

I'm convinced that the people behind Partnership for a Drug Free America are sadists. Their whole point is just to scare the shit out of us, especially with their use of sound. There are some exceptions like Cleaning Girl and Everybody's Doin' It which have a happy tune, but for the most part the narrations, background music and sound effects are super creepy. I was legit afraid whenever a new PSA appeared on screen.

Take a shot for every PDFA PSA that uses a loud thud or droning music sting to emphasize its point.

FINALLY! Well done Pizza! you are one of the fellows that inspired my PSA interests, and eventually my PSA channel. Even though it was short, I enjoyed my time in the PSA community :D. But back to what I was talking about, this video is amazing! Well done dude, give yourself a pat on the back, you deserve it!

Great to see a new compilation out. Still watching the 80s timeline and enjoying it. Also, some of them made me think that numerous international PSAs, ads and PIFs have referenced/made their own format of certain scenes and themes.
@Fabrysiheder2 жыл бұрын
after the ad at 4:19:31, im not even kidding, I literally thought to myself "if the next ad will be comparing a guy having a prostate exam to talking to your kids about drugs, I will lose my shit"..and low and behold, the next ad was just that!😆 You are a genius with this compilation

"people that smoke meth rarely sleep because while awake they already have nightmares" dam that was one quote from this whole video that stuck with me. anyway I've been following you for a few years, hope you're doing well and still have some PSAs left to upload. can't imagine there are many more left out there haha

I’m literally obsessed with these. It’s like a scary movie that takes you back to childhood😅 I remember a lot of these and still remember why I used to be so scared of the fear-mongering. I will say this, it kept me off drugs. I was afraid of drowning in my room while hugging my teddy bear 😂😂😂😂

Glad to see this channel still uploads new compilations. I watched your first ones all the way back in my first year of high school and was genuinely freaked out and impressed by a lot of the PSAs/PIFs. How the time seems to fly... I hope you continue making these for other PSA companies out there.

I'm surprised they didn't make more ads aimed at 2nd hand smoke. As an adult if you wanna quit smoking you can choose a smoke free bar or not go outside with your friends while they have a smoke break or just cut out smoking in your house altogether. Young teens who are getting hooked and want to quit are stuck in cars with adult smokers and alot of parents also puff in the house. And your average teen has to home by a certain time so eventually every day they are exposed if their parents smoke. This makes their addiction much harder to stop even if they wanted to and furthering thier chances of being lifelong smokers.

The pot ones are just ridiculous! Such scaremongering! Yes pot has its drawbacks, but not nearly as much as some of the other drugs. And though these PSAs COULD talk about how you shouldn't drive high, or how pot can exacerbate some mental illnesses, no, it chooses to make up nonexistent problems to the point of complete ludicrousness.
@thebrazilianpifchannel63372 жыл бұрын
The "best" part is that they always show sports and art to be preachy, but forget to mention that many athletes and artists use way worse drugs.
