Other tips as a software engineer: - don’t be afraid to ask for referrals - utilize your school resources like their internship job portals or career fairs - be really early to applications, these applications are on a rolling basis

Those "give me an example of a time when ____ happened and what did you do?" questions are hard sometimes, especially for someone fresh out of college and maybe hasn't worked a whole lot yet. I can remember interviewing for a position when I was newly out of college and the question was something like "describe a time when you were working with a team and had a conflict with your boss, how did you overcome it as a team?" - and I genuinely had never been in that situation before so I gave an answer about something that happened in school but it was considered "personal".

A feel like a lot of this advice is catered to people who are still currently in college and how they should attend recruiting events on campus and such. What if you're out of college after a few years and you're trying to enter the software engineering field? With zero software engineering work experience, a non-cs-related degree, the paths to software engineering care seem unknown. People always say "just work on projects and you'll get noticed", but once they see you're not a new grad and not a cs major, it's hard to grab attention after that.

The addressed that though. Contact employees, attend events online or in person. Pay attention to social media

Fair point. I think a lot of the practices discussed are somewhat translatable (i.e. going to recruiting events, networking with people within a company and their recruiters, and interview prep stuff sill applies). For non-university recruiting, companies are typically looking for people who know how to do the job already, and given that there's so many roles out there, I don't think I can give blanket advice for how to find those roles. I know at least for iOS dev, folks typically look for people with experience building production apps with an existing userbase.

A tiny piece of my experience with soft skills - you can even demonstrate them on take home assignments! Either through comments (describe the code snippets that were hard for you and how you solved the problems, what sources you used, etc.), of in the form of a readme, if you can return a whole repository🌸 i’ve had great success with this, even though my implementation took a looot longer to run than it should’ve😆

I don't think contacting random people who work at tech companies is going to work unless you show why it is worth the time of the person you connect with. Companies are getting flooded with resumes, and it is an unfortunate common practice for candidates to ping multiple employees at the same company to try to get the employee to forward their resume, resulting in lots of duplicates. You are going to have to show some investment in that particular connection before you can expect someone to reciprocate with you.

Honestly I am a few years into the tech grind and I have never been that great at the hardcore tech questions. Like I know my stuff but soft skills go a long way! I just make sure I learn as fast as possible when I get to a new place and ask ALL the questions. EDIT: I don't work in FANG so maybe it doesn't apply there.

Oh crap, on that last tip, that may be an issue for me. I have two colleges diplomas. Business and Human Resources. I am going back to school to pursue my other interest and get an advanced diploma in Computer Programming and Analysis in the fall. I actually want to utilize both of my skills on the business and technology side in the future. But I have decided to pursue programming as a career. So I may get in trouble with recruiters. Will I be ok when it is time to look for a job I have no experience in as well?

@@27k76 A different world. :-) In Belgium, between 2 and 3 rounds. 2 being the most common in my experience. The 1st round would be an introduction to the job/project followed by a discussion with one or 2 potential colleagues. Technical tests are most of the time also taken care of in the 1st round, though exceptionally you have to come back for them. The 3rd (if applicable) revolves around contract negotiation, but that's usually pro forma here.

@OlivierMuhring 3 жыл бұрын
4 or more rounds are exceptional here, and for some people even a reason to stop the process.
@hellomayuko
@hellomayuko 3 жыл бұрын
In my experience, it's usually 3 rounds! First being a recruiter screen (casual conversation with the recruiter and/or hiring manager). The second is a technical interview (take-home exercise, or technical phone screen), and the third is an onsite interview (technical and behavioral interviews).
