How to grow Coelogyne Unchained Melody 'Alba'

This week Plant Lovers yet another Coelogyne has burst into bloom: Coelogyne Unchained Melody 'Alba'. I actually filmed this in September and the flowers have only just turned! This is a beautiful flower with a touch of lemon yellow on the lip and a light fragrance; super easy to grow! Coelogynes make good companion plants for Cymbidiums as they like similar conditions, so if you can grow Cymbidiums and are looking for a challenge, try a Coelogyne! I got given a welcome Coelogyne Flaccida when I joined my local orchid society, and there was not the hint of a flower spike. I didn't event think it was flowering size. Inside 14 days, I have a spike with 7 buds just starting to open. It is on my East facing dining room table.

Cymbidium, Zygo and Coelogyne… interesting combo. So I must say I underestimated how cold of temperature Zygo and Coelogyne can take. I leave my cymbidiums out till around freezing point. I knew Zygo and Coelogyne are cooler growing but never left them outside in that low temp. 🤔 How low would be too low in your opinion? As far as the name goes, I agree, don’t really care if it’s that or mossiae. But I got mossiae which is most likely unchanged melody, but I also got mossiae ‘Sheldon’ which is much much smaller and I can’t find anything about it on internet. I have not bloomed it yet so I can’t say anything about it.

Growers around Melbourne have them out doors undercover and grow them 'cold' - ie no heating at all. Inner city rarely gets to or below 0oC (32oF) winter minimum, outer city can dip below 0 depending on the exact location. If your winter nights are regularly sub zero C and you get frosts I'd say definitely no! Occasional sub zero C and no frosts - I would try. Depends where you are. If you're part of an orchid group ask around! I've found out amazing tolerances in orchids by other growers sharing their results I'd never have thought possible!

@@helloplantlovers ah, ok. Thank you. I will not leave them out then. It is below freezing point at night now and stays that way till maybe February. But day time temps usually over 35 in winter.
