Sway was big way before interview with em he actually did news for MTV…also Cassidy vs Freeway came before smack dvd and kinda catapulted battle rap in the form it is in now. It was the biggest thing underground it was on every mixtape that was popular before the KZbin came around and the video surfaced

_The Wake Up Show_ hosted by Sway and King Tech itself held freestyles and rap battles on radio. _The Source_ magazine also held tournaments, at least in the Bay Area, maybe in other areas or even other states. So even Northern California had a battle rap scene between the late-1990s and early-2000s that not enough people talk about. Two rappers that came from that scene are Mistah FAB and Locksmith. MTV held two tournaments called _MTV MC Battle_ in 2002 and 2003, respectively. The finals for the 2002 edition was Locksmith and RJ Payne (then Reign Man) which RJ controversially won. To get to the MTV televised tournament you had to first come through qualifier tournaments held in various major cities. The Wake Up Show was part of that process as well. Locksmith's interviews with No Jumper, Dregs One and AllHipHop are worth watching for those interested. He also competed in the NY battle rap scene.

Em was at Scribble '97, not '96.. at the end you showed Jin as a commercial rapper who hasnt returned but he did do 1 round recently against illmac.. respect for having a more informative vid than I was expecting.. No mention of Grind Time which was the american version of KOTD that started slighty earlier than them.. Freestyle battles died out with Jumpoff & Scribble, who had their last events in 07 & 08 respectively.. Then Grind Time, KOTD, & Smack brought battle rap to millions of views by dropping the tournament format & having 1v1 written battles.. but lets be real, their views have recently dropped because its been the same gun rap shit for a decade now.

As a guy who learned to rap from battle rap, I'm glad the battle rap culture is getting a resurgence. It's the college football of rap culture; raw, real and free of corporate influence or industry plants. And considering the current state of mainstream hip-hop, battle rap is the only thing we genuine rap fans have left.......
