Jay didn't own Def Jam, he was a worker too and, in an interview, Jay said, you cannot sign an artist like Nas, you partner with him. Nas never worked for Jayz, they were both were employed by Def Jam. Jay was just the president. Nas owns a piece of Jay Z publishing, Mc Serch, owner of Serchlife Publishing said this. Jay didn't surrender to Nas, he LOST to Nas, so in my opinion, Law 22 is a stretch if you have to associate it with Jay Z and how the battle played out. After that defeat, jay fans started taking solace to the phrase, Nas won the battle, but Jay won the war lol lol . And most people don't know, that before Super Ugly, there where 2 disses (freeestyles) that Jay dropped, but were played on radio only once and on the 3rd diss which is supa ugly, he still couldn't put out something as disrespectful as Ether. Nonetheless, the beef is over, but as fans, we will forever talk about this battle, because it was one of the dopest and most memorable. Shout out to both rappers, they are great Mc's just different tiers. Nas is, was and always be the GOAT

Nas owns a piece of the Jay-Z “Dead President” song publishing due to Jay-Z sampling Nas voice on the chorus…. Nas don’t own a piece of Jay-Z’s publishing as a whole. MC Serch didn’t clarify

Good take, Nas the better lyricist though so speaking from a strictly hip-hop context he won. Yeah and I guess if you are only a capitalist junkie and money is your only metric then Jay-Z won. But that's a redundant argument because he wasn't really fighting against Nas to make billions of dollars. They both worked together to secure a bag and further their careers.

Jay is smart enough to understand that rap beefs are most about character too, people go with who they like more Jay doesnt have the charisma of DMX, Pac, 50, he actually was supposed be like Nas in persona, but he could did what Nas couldnt, crossover to the mainstream with radio hits even without the "aura" that guys who sell tons of records have So he couldnt beef and won against Nas because Nas represented the "real hip hop" shit, and he doenst represent the mainstream well enough because his lack os charisma, was a better choice let it go Example of what i talking is when Jada murdered 50 but people dont give a shit, or when KRS when at Nelly but no one give a shit either, cuz these guys had all the charisma to dodge the bullets and represented well the image of mainstream Rap Jay was always in between, he was Raekwon but was also Ludacris, people wouldnt go to his side in a beef against an icon of real hip hop like Nas regardless of bars, and unfortnatelly Nas had crazy bars Jay is my goat but he lost and props for him to admited

The only thing Jay-z was better than Nas at rap was dumbing his audience down and selling out, as Jay would say himself. In terms of the hip hop culture, Jay doesn’t come CLOSE to Nas. This was an excellent video but a little more research needed to be done first because there are a few errors. Nas responded to Memphis Bleek in his verse on Da Bridge 2001 before Jay released Takeover. Also, many of the opportunities that Jay capitalized off of were initially brought to Nas first but he turned them down. Which is what eventually lead to Steve Stoute Nas’ former manager working Jay. Nas took advice from Kobe (R.I.P) and started his own venture capitalist firm and has been quietly making moves behind the scenes for years. Actually Nas formed his venture capitalist firm before Jay formed his. So contrary to popular belief Jay isn’t a better businessman than Nas. It’s just that Nas moves in silence and he only takes deals he feel won’t comprise his integrity. While Jay Will take just about any deal that Will net him a profit and that’s the difference between them. Nas’ net worth is 9 figures and while Jay maybe a billionaire, Nas is wealthy and has always maintained his integrity.

A better example for this could be J Cole vs Kendrick. Cole apologizes and then escapes the larger fight between Kendrick and Drake unscathed. That war becomes such a toxic fight that everyone looks differently at J Cole for not getting involved, and then he lies low letting the conversation around him refocus about his retirement from rap with The Fall Off to mainly be an executive at Dreamville.

much better record and I'd argue and Jay had better bars. Takeover was a statement (that was fulfilled) not a diss, going for everyone's throats. I don't get the comparisons really, it's unfair to judge a whole song directed at someone and going personal vs a few bars.

When people say "Nas won the battle but Jay won the war", what was the war? Nas won the battle definitively but was the war to see who was the best businessman? Because to this day if you're talking about the respect of their peers with regards to their craft Nas still gets higher praise than Jay. Jay has more hits but Nas has more respect. I suppose it depends on what you're after ultimately.

Call it what you want. I call it faking it until you make it. Jay claims the Nas is posing while he himself is posing (basically calling him a hypocrite). Nas has always been authentic. Jay knows how to manipulate the system and make the people fall for bs, that's how he gained major sales. Not going to say Nas didn't do the same but not nearly to the extent of where Jay does it. Jay is willing to lie, cheat, and steal just to make a dollar out of 15 cents. Good on him, he's as good as 50 cent and EMI for doing that. But only lowlives respect it. That's why they're over rated. I could respect coming the people in order for them to fork over cash by making sense out of bs. I just can't drop myself to that level, nor respect others that do. Jay won the business war, but lyrical songs he was tethered hard. Jay z Stan's don't want to admit it. Super ugly was generic and weak as generic and weak can be.

Jay-Z literally hasn’t dropped a hot album in over 20 years (the Black Album). Jay-Z has a 1 hot album every 20 year average 🤣🤣🤣🤣 He’s not dead, there’s no excuse for him to drop mid to trash albums SINCE the black album.

My man Nas is still making great albums and jay hasn’t made a great album since American Gangster. If Nas supposedly lost the war, well over the last 6 albums he is winning. I didn’t have to die before people called me the great one, it didn’t take a couple of albums people said it from day one- Nas My 1st album had no famous guest appearances, the outcome i’m crowd the best lyricist- nas
