Hellraiser (1987) Movie Review

This is my all-time favorite horror series. I love the mythology and the RAWness of it. I also love the original novella. I've read it three times. The reboot from last year is also excellent. Thanks for covering this! Fun fact: Those awful "electricity" effects in the end were done by Barker himself, mostly while drunk, since they had basically run out of money by that point! :D

I watched this as a person that was too young to have been watching it, so let's start there. I want to commend you for another great video, and I concur, I thought I was the only person that was repulsed more by Julia's hairstyle than Frank's drippy, shiny, oozy, skinless body...…almost anyway. Here's a factoid about the movie that I think is great: Frank's original line was to be "F**k You" before he was shredded by the Cenobites, but instead the actor playing Frank changed it to "Jesus Wept" … and it ended up being one of the most famous quotes of the movie. I love that, and I think it's perfect. Again, great video my friend!

Yeah, with everything this movie has I can definitely see why it would be best to wait until you're older to watch it. I appreciate the ind words! Glad to see someone else not like Julia's hair, just always looked so weird to me in this. I believe I remember seeing that factoid before, possibly anyways at the very least it sounds familiar! But I'm glad they changed it, the line we have now just works so well! Thank you!!

Yeah it is kinda funny! Apparently that is even referenced in one of the novels he wrote.

Oh FYI, the hobo guy is basically like a puzzle box guardian. Once someone uses it and gets dragged to another dimension, he is there to makes sure it gets passed on. There are actually some great short stories and comics for Hellraiser that explore the hell dimension more. It's all fascinating. I just hate when they try to make it a traditional "hell" with "heaven" as the opposite, and they're literal demons. It just reduces the whole thing to something much more familiar and much less original. They're meant to be what they say they are: "explorers" of sensation and they simply exist in a dimension where you can reconstruct someone's body over and over. Basically imagine a place where you can't die no matter what is done to your actual body. That's way more scary!

I'm with you on the portrayal of "hell", I don't like when they try to make it a literal hell and make the Cenobites demons. The way things are done in this film and Hellbound are infinitely more interesting than them using the sorta standard heaven/hell and angels/demons stuff. I agree with you, this is way more scary!

@@Talon_Productions Absolutely! It's better when they're a little bit unknowable. The reboot film did them very well I think.
