Regarding OG Black Christmas - Jess admitted that she originally wasn't going to tell Peter she was pregnant and getting an abortion. That line always stuck out to me. When a womans gut is to not tell her significant other about this kind of situation, there's a reason why deep down. I firmly believe Peter's true colors would have always come out but they REALLY came out in the event of the movie.
@jonsrecordcollection71728 ай бұрын
I personally would have allowed Peter to last for more brackets, because of how controlling he is of Jess, how he is *this close* to becoming physically abusive of Jess etc. etc. If the director is deliberately making you as the boyfriend look almost indistinguishable from the murderer, you are definitely a bad boyfriend. It is a common horror trope to have a non-monstrous character somehow symbolically paired with the monster & in the OG Black Christmas, it's obvious they are doing this with Peter & Billy.

My vote for worst horror husband is definitely Francis. Him refusing to translate further isolates her and also distorts her reality. He supposedly is choosing to withhold information about the serial killer from her to "protect her". But she's also a grown ass woman who doesn't need to be babied. He also starts to get a little victim blame-y when he says that she may be the one bothering the man and not the other way around. That guy suuucks
@wesleylara51363 ай бұрын
Let us not forget that Francis wants to have his cake and eat it too by moving to Romania for the purposes of furthering his career and bringing his wife along with him. But Julia was an aspiring actress in her own right and now she's been moved to another country where she can't speak the language, effectively being forced to give up her career solely for Francis's benefit. And on top of that, a murder happens near their building towards the start of the film and Francis can put 2 and 2 together that the crime report on the body fits the MO of the killer. With that knowledge, he still not only refuses to take his wife's concerns seriously, but is also okay with leaving her by herself when there's a confirmed murder in the nearby vicinity. Yeah, James and Chelsea kinda cooked with including him here because I genuinely could not remember how horrible he was. Props to Karl Glusman too for the performance.

People seem to forget the beginning of Midsommar where she's talking to Christian on the phone expressing fears that her sister was going to do something harmful, and he does the whole "you're imagining this in your head again, you always do this, just forget about it" and you can tell he invalidates her feelings often. So she doubts herself/does as he tells her and then her whole family is dead. THAT was the moment right off the bat when I hated the character more than anything. I think you guys were totally correct in your assessment of Christian from Midsommar! I do think that the general debate between the "good for her" vs "she's literally a victim of cult indoctrination" interpretations of Dani's ending also colors people's perception of Christian, in that he's definitely a bad boyfriend and a spineless sort of guy but he's not a necessarily bad person nor did he deserve his fate. Compared to a lot of the other bad partners that ended up in the final brackets, he's much more of a bad boyfriend in the realistic sense of being emotionally checked out and relatively negligent rather than overtly malicious or harmful to Dani. Plus, unlike a lot of the guys in the running who were mostly kept out of the action until the end, Christian was also pretty quickly swept up in the cult's machinations in order to further push him apart and isolate Dani.
@Jadeelmao8 ай бұрын
I think in a lot of ways his FRIENDS were worse than him loool
@scottlovesmoviestoomuch8 ай бұрын
Respectfully, I cannot disagree more. And personally I think what makes someone like Christian so particular insidious is not how in how seemingly harmless he is, but in how much he *manipulates* people to SEE him as harmless. If you closely watch every interaction he has the entire movie, he does not once do anything that is genuinely kind or sincerely altruistic. Every conversation he has is emotional grifting. Even resisting dumping Dani after her family dies comes across less as him feeling any kind of sympathy for her (seriously, look at his expression as she cries on his lap, and it just screams “Great, look at what *I* have to deal with now), and more that he understands people will automatically think of him as the bad guy, which he constantly (I might even say pathologically) refuses to let anyone paint him as the entire film. That’s why he’s conflict-averse: not because he cares about the other person’s feelings or anything, but he understands that the risk in conflict is the potential to be perceived by others as wrong. So as a result, he constantly weasels his way out of people being able to call him out for the self-centered jerk that he is. If you look up a “dark empath,” I feel like he has many of the signifiers. And what makes them so dangerous is that, unlike a normal narcissist, they have the emotional sophistry to really fly under the radar, like Christian does.

@@scottlovesmoviestoomuch100%. I'll never understand people thinking Christian isn't a bad person, but they saw him do what he did, stealing his friends thesis being one thing that comes to mind. He's selfish, inconsiderate and manipulative and people forget that just because he "didn't deserve" his ending. No one deserves to be graped, but I wasn't sad to see him die either. Not to mention the cult set it up to make it seem like C was cheating. How could Dani have known any better, especially because of how it treated her before hand? He's death wasn't even the most gruesome in the movie. His friends deserved to die even less, one (if I remember right) died more horribly than he but no one here feels sorry for them. Also, I'm not even sure anyone truly thinks Dani had a good ending. Sure, someone out there probably genuinely thinks that, but mostly I feel that is mostly a meme, and/or people trying to make Dani seem worse than Christian. I saw one person say she was awful because "she forced herself on the trip", forgetting that C literally invited her. If you don't want someone to come with you, don't invite them, even if you think they'll say no, there's always a chance they'll say yes. I think Micah got unfairly slammed in this for one, single reason: Christi and katie’s grandma was already knee-deep in this demon shit and everything in that franchise was going to happen whether or not Micah wanted to film it. He did not create the paranormal franchise, it was going to happen to these families with or without him filming the first movie.

In my opinion, Jack from Don't Worry Darling is the worst Horror Movie Husband/Boyfriend. He essentially kidnaps his wife by knocking her out and then making her a prisoner in her own mind by drugging her and keeping her strapped to a bed for god knows how long in a 1950's simulation because he wanted a housewife that catered to his every whim because "its my world" and when she figures it out, he tries to gaslight her saying "i did this for you, you get to stay in this perfect place but i need to work". He stole her life.

Not defending Ethan Hawke's character but there is that scene when he burns the film and tells his wife, "We have to go right now" that is at least slightly redeemable. He basically throws away that case to protect him family. It's far too late but it is noteworthy. I do think they made the right decision in that Ethan was worse but it's not super cut and dry.

I would have included husband from "The Invisible man (2020)". He does not outright murder his wife. I understand it is similar to the jack torrence. But I think he would have cleaned house, just due to the gaslighting torture he puts her through. It's not even about murder, it's about control and torment. He wants her to be alive and puts her through hell.

Okay, I don’t have a worst boyfriend but the best boyfriends are Chad and Danny from Scream 6. Danny is encouraging to Sam to be less afraid, but also understands she’s dealing with trauma and is patient. He gives her space and respects her wishes for him not to wind up in harm’s way, but still finds ways to help (such as notifying paramedics or the ladder scene). And Chad 100% lives up to his name, literally sacrificing himself and nearly dying to save Tara and his friends and also being patient with Tara and just an awesome guy… and this was before him and Tara stated dating.

I think Mark from Till Death could be a good contender. He's like a mix between Crispian from You're Next and Gerald from Gerald's Game in how he tries to kill Emma by sending an ex-criminal to their cabin and then dies within the first act of the film.
@Lilbunnifoofoo8 ай бұрын
I truly like the last 4 in the matchups. I do agree with Crispin taking it though because not only did he not consider Erin's wellbeing during the event or how she would recover after it, he didn't give a shit about any of his family. When he sees the carnage at the end, and finds out she killed his brother, he tells her that means they have more money and that they can just go on and live their lives together. He doesn't seem to realize that the woman he was dating just saw how little of a shit he gave about his 1) entire family and 2) his partners in crime being dead. He legit thought that he could Gaslight, Gatekeep, and Girlboss his way out of this situation. Erin is smart enough to know that if she had said, "Okay let's run away together" she would be just as disposable as his family. She is the only witness that he was behind the plot and that means that she would be a liability.

The one horror husband I think that gets too much flack is Don from 28 weeks later. He literally said "don't let that kid come in, they will follow him and find us." Then, not only do they let the young boy in, but they also turn the oven back on to cook him some food. Which creates a smell, which attracted the infected. Then, when the infected do start breaking into the house, the little boy runs and hides in the house, forcing Don's wife to look for him against Don's wishes and plea's to leave so they could escape and focus on saving their own kids. Then, his wife finds the boy deep in the house hiding. Then, after all of that, Don in the doorway with a horde of infected entering the room and his wife says "Don, help us!" Like, WTF is he supposed to do?! He literally was trying to help you by getting you to start running away much faster! And to top it off, Jacob, the only other guy who decided to run away right off the rip, gets caught trying to detach the boat because Don had so many infected chasing him. If his wife listened to him, Jacob, Don's wife, and Don would have all escaped. I 100% believed Don was in the right in the opening of 28 weeks later.

Crispin takes it for me, especially when you consider the parallel of his relationship to Erin in their academic setting. Joe Swanberg made a snide comment at the dinner table of it being unprofessional to date your student, which I agree with! There's a power dynamic and a disregard of how that dynamic would affect Erin, just like his total disregard of putting her in danger and witnessing a massacre would affect her, under the assumption that he planned for her to live in the end which i doubt. either way, Erin was being exploited.

Some thoughts for worst horror girlfriends- the podcast mentioned Rose Armitage (Get Out), and I'm seeing a lot of mentions of Bridget (Leprechaun 2). I think I'd add Cleopatra (Freaks)- Marries a man for money then cheats behind his back and is super ableist towards him; Annabelle Loren (House on Haunted Hill 1959)- elaborate plot to get her husband killed and run away with her lover; Mrs. Lovett (Sweeney Todd)- I don't think she killed anyone, but she condoned murder and tricked who knows how many people into cannibalism, and lied to Sweeney about his wife's condition; Wilma (Creepshow- The Crate)- verbally abusive.
