I've done Hell's Canyon several times, and it is a cake walk compared to the terrain here in Inland SoCal ... steeper, more tumbly rocks, looser soil, dense chapparal and the quail are much smaller and way faster than chukar, and disappear over ridges ... you get 3/4 of a second to locate and pull the trigger. This past season, the birds were flushing 80 yard in front of the dog, not infrequently.

BTW... As a hunter I am all about fair chase...skip the trail cameras in season and also baiting, certainly on public lands. Let's do one in the Snake River terrain Steve. Appreciate Meateaters approach to fair chase hunting. Stay easy and enjoy the ride.

My country and my favorite kind of bird hunting (love the bossness comment about Chukar hunting for revenge). I’ve got 5 or 6 birds on a couple of occasions, but mostly shoot many shells and bring home 1 or 2 “devil birds”. Always fun to watch my GSP work them. Unfortunately we’re both getting up there in age. Not many more Chukar hunts left before we both “retire” from it. Gonna miss it a lot, but time marches on.
