In this video we cover ladder testing for the 6.5 Creedmoor using Berger 144gr Hybrids and Vihtavuori N550 powder. Did we achieve 6.5 PRC velocity? Not quite, but this 6.5 is no longer a "needs more."

Well done! Although it's overpressure, shooting a 144gr Hybrid at 2950fps is 6.5 PRC velocities. Looking forward to the Long Range testing. I think that will open some peoples eyes to what really matters at distance, and what people SHOULD be looking for at 100yds, if they want consistent long range performance. Good stuff Aaron.

I have your solution...buy a 6.5 PRC. For comparison out of my PRC factory terminal ascent 130s I ran two boxes through the chronograph. Low 3060 High 3183. Choice ammo 120s only 10 rounds through low 3260 high 3280. So now I have the reloading components and will be looking for 3000 fps in a 150 and 3250 in a 129. I think the PRC can easily do it.

I love your username 😂 Yeah, I've got a 7 twist barrel coming soon. Might chamber that in 6.5 PRC or 6.5 weatherby. I'd like a 6.5 magnum eventually.

Interesting. I averaged 2955 with the factory 130gr terminal ascents out of a Tikka CTR 24” barrel. I was disappointed with the speed.

@soupie31547 Those were out of a Bergara premier approach 24 inch. My Browning Hells Canyon Mcmillan 26 inch shoots much slower across the board. I don't have 100 rounds through it yet maybe it will speed up. I bought 5 boxes of 127 LRX and fired through both rifles they were in the 2800s. Talk about weak so I sold off the rest. Hornady 143s and Nosler 142s were mid 2900s.

@Longrangelab I really wanted to get into 6.8 western since I didn't jump on the 270 wsm craze. But ammo doesn't look sustainable and I really don't need that much power. I was a 6.5 Swede manbun for 25 years and the 6.5 PRC is just enough magnum and in a short action for me.

Nice shooting. I am considering make the jump to 6.5 PRC but love how your groups held together even above max PSI levels. I might just have to stick with the 6.5 CM after all.

If you don't mind chewing through brass faster. It doesn't seem to care at these higher pressures.
@Pete856
@Pete856 29 күн бұрын
Imagine the velocity if you could keep the pressure up at 72k psi all the way to the muzzle, rather than the 10k psi. Obviously not possible with any available powders, but I do think there is room to incorporate some of what they do for artillery where the powder consists of much larger grains with many small hole through the center. As the powder burns, the holes rapidly increase in size creating a much larger burning surface which accelerates the rate of gas production and helps keep the pressure high.
@jmkhenka
@jmkhenka 29 күн бұрын
dude, you just described normal progressive powder that has been in use since the 50's. The slower the powder - the larger the train. Also additives that slow the burn rate. But you can never get away from needing more powder in the end, more slower powder is better then anything faster as it keeps the pressure high longer.
@PwntifexMaximus

@@jmkhenka The notable downside to this is heating of the barrel and ungodly noise once the high-pressure gasses are released.

@Longrangelab I have found that to be a good measurement for pressure. Its pretty obvious when a load is going to kill the brass quickly if its opening the pocket by .0005-.001 vs the lighter charges.

Have you done any testing with reloader 26 in the 6.5 CM. I've loaded both 135 and 140 Bergers with 13-17 ES and velocities in the 2900-2950 range as well as very nice accuracy. Seemed like a very slow powder for this cartridge but have seen several channels testing these combos with impressive results and no pressure signs. I would imagine it would do well with the heavier 144 as well assuming you have sufficient case capacity.

@@Longrangelab no I have a savage ultralite. It has a long throat from factory. Jumping about .020 and my coal on 147 is 2.891. Granted that’s not super long. GRT predicted the load I currently have and it predicts over 2800 for 65k. Right now I’m at 55k at 2700fps. I run my 6,5x55 at 62k psi. Approx 2900 foot fetish per second. From a 53cm barrel (21"). The ordinary velocity of 6.5cm and the old Norwegian/Swedish 6,5x55 with the same pressure is good for most hunting world wide.

Just use Berger data😂 Those Berger boys like to push the limits for sure on their data. But for comparison my PRC is spitting a 156 Berger at a 20 shot average of 2999.5 fps. But you're pretty hot but you've got a really long barrel.
