Hellschreiber, HF Digital Mode For Ham Radio, More Digital Modes Exist Other Than FT-8

The guy who invented this earliest of modes just died not to long ago. Like 2002 I think. He was nearly 100 years old. It’s such a unique mode. Whenever I go digital, I usually send out several “cq’s” in Feld hell mode. Thanks for putting it out there Eric! De n5vwn

This is the _best_ way to raise Hell. BTW, Hellschreiber is the mode used to print text right on your spectrum waterfall. That flavour of Hellschreiber is known as "concurrent multi-tone Hellschreiber". 73 VE7NDE

Great video. I've tried Hell once and seen the noise come across and didn't try it again. Done the same with Thor. I'll have to give these modes another try.

Good video as always. Feldhell one of my favorite when I did digital. Like where you showed what freq's are usually the best place to find contacts. Oh it reminds me of RTTY with the ticker tape style of printing on the screen. Hopefully I will have the IC7300 back online when you start the net.

Not used Feldhell for a few years. It is a fun mode to use and vastly different that most of the MGM types of signal we normally use. It is used round Europe a bit but mostly it is quiet as they are now going Olivia and also Contestia modes. But Feldhell is still keeping up as a niche mode now, similar to SITOR and Fax itself.

One more thing, you compared feld hell to cw and that is a very good comparison due to the binary nature of the signal itself. The K3NG keyer project even includes a feld hell mode…from a CW keyer!

I could be wrong but my understanding is that machines like that old one shown had nothing to do with radio at all. I believe that it was like an original 2 way fax in that journalists used audio over a phone line to send reports. I find this mode fascinating and so lends itself to radio.

Hellschreiber is my favorite mode. I remember the first contact watching my callsign come up on 2 lines just being like the first ever contact. I love this mode as it is really easy to copy weak stations ( as long as the qrm is down on receiving). wish i could implement this in my semi truck but no room yet to put a laptop in right now where the radio is located. But it is deffinately better than ft-8 as it requires interaction. not automatic and people just leaving their station unattended just to get WAS. when I have had WAS for years before ft-8 and did it all being in front of my rig and using it. Almost at WAS for SSB but just 1 state away yet but going to get that sometime. Keep pushing these other digital modes as I really do miss psk-31 alot. Seems like everyone wants to take the easy way out and use way too much power on ft-8. all my contacts on ft-8 have been 15 watts or less. Not 100+. Dont want to wash out the waterfalls. But then again, FCC rules state to use the minimum power necessary to complete the communication. AND NOONE SEEMS TO CARE. all selfish brats who don't repect others let alone the hobby.

I totally appreciate your comment and you couldn’t be more right on what you just said… keep in mind, I’ve had about 23 emails telling me I’m an ASSHOLE for bashing FT8 and they hate my videos , LOL, but I could care less, someone out there is going to find a new mode based on my videos and that’s all I care about. I can’t wait to make a video one day with all this hate mail, it will be fun to read.

Feld Hell is most popular. There's a few nets and (mostly casual) contests. Also a few clubs. Your favorite search engine will get you there.

With FT4 They could lengthen the cycle to include more character so that more things can be conveyed than just signal reports.

Your influence must be working. There was hardly no one on ft8 yesterday, Thanks for ruining ft8. There wasn't but a few on the new "bowl" (20 meter ft8)

Very funny... I have no way of influencing people to drop off FT8. The PSKreporter database shows millions of exchanges on FT8 yesterday and I just turned on the radio today and saw tens of thousands more on 20 meters... Better check your antenna and your coax
