So the reason alucard has been missing is because the bad guys used van winkle as bait to trap him on the ship. It’s common vampire lore that they can’t cross bodies of water. The whole invasion could only happen because he isn’t there to stop them.

@@marshmallowcat2456 More-so the soil in which he was buried. Dating back to pagan traditions and stories, native soil is said to have regenerative properties. In some writings vampires have needed to have their own native soil and their coffins in order to rest, regenerate and cross bodies of water.

@@acekiller10 Yeah, if I remember correctly, Seras is incredibly weak as a vampire cause she won't drink blood, so she needs to sleep in a coffin with soil from her birthplace to maintain any level of strength, to say nothing of the sun and its effects. On the other end of the spectrum, Alucard just doesn't like the sun cause it tires him out.

Why didn't anyone do proper reconnaissance- Oh, _fick mich..."_ If you remember, recon was supposed to be her job.

Alucard being absent was absolutely a thing in the original show. They abridged writers rib on it at the end of the Rip Van Winkle episode where Alucard laughs and says "I better not miss a damn thing", knowing full well he wasn't gonna be in the next few episodes.

Even with how long I’d been watching TFS’s work (discovered DBZA just after they did episode 19), I was in awe at how they managed to not only diffuse **that** scene but also humorize it as much as they did.

The explanation in lore is that , for Vampires, taking blood is much less powerfull then having blood offered. Hence why Pip consenting to Seras taking his blood gave her such a massive powerup. This is why Alucard is so OP even without his broken regeneration. All his soldiers offered themselves to him wholeheartedly, giving him enough power to become the undisputed King of Vampires.

The big reason Alucard was gone was that Kouta Hirano (creator of the original manga) more than likely wrote himself in to a corner because Alucard is so strong and it’s hard to rise the stakes of the story with a damn near all powerful character always present. I remember when Takahata101 and KaiserNeko from TFS talked about it in their twitch stream back a couple of years ago when they talked about the BTS and making of HUA

All powerful characters are pretty hard to write. I think they do a pretty good job with Goku though because we bever see an arch where Goku is already strong enough to take on the main bad guy. Every new enemy is always stronger than the last.

I don't think it's "wrote himself into a corner" since, as shown later, Millennium actually could and would beat Alucard. And iirc Alucard's fight with the Captain during WW2 was one of the few fights he ran away from (admittedly he wasn't level 0 at the time, but also level 0 wasn't something Hirano established until after Alucard came back anyways, so it wasn't a corner he could have written into yet). It's more a) he wanted to give more time and conflict to the side character, and especially the other main character Seras. Her not being able to rely on Alucard was an needed step in her character development. and b) he wanted to take the story in a bleaker direction for a while and putting Alucard on the bench is an effective way to do that (the abridged series even makes jokes about this change in tone in the source material). Besides, when Alucard comes back, he doesn't even take out the threats he supposedly was too powerful to be around, the Captain and the Major are taken out by Seras and Integra. He takes out just a bunch of goons, Anderson and Walter, the latter to not even having been established as being threats until he came back. Furthermore it's actually making the villains somewhat competent by not having them go all in before they neutralized the biggest threat to their plans. If anyone was in their shoes it's obvious that the most immediate question would be what to do with Alucard. So the boat-trap to give them the time to carry out their plan, and if it doesn't give them enough they have the Schrödinger plan as a 50/50 backup.

This episode is probably the darkest in the series(Especially in the original show, like holy shit dark), but the pay off with Seras becoming a full blown vampire and wiping out Zorin and her men like nothing is such a pay off. One of my favorite episodes.

Alucard was very absent for a long time in the original show. It's basically a case of the author made him too powerful and needed him to be gone for a while so plot could happen and put him out of the fight for a while

The thing with Alucard is that both in the original and abridged versions the ship he was in was a trap designed to imprison him and keep him out of London to make time for the Millenium to "prepare" the stage for "their" showdown(vampires cant fly above bodies of water on their own according to original novel and this anime).

As several others have pointed out, Alucard's absence is in the original. Jeffy's line of "I wish Alucard was here!' & Pip's response of "He's on a fucking boat, & there's not a goddamn thing we can do about it!" was pretty much the comments whining about Alucard & TFS telling them that they literally can't do anything about it without just skipping all of these last 2 episodes. There's only 10 episodes of Hellsing, & I'm glad they went all in with Alucard's absence. DBZA has 60 episodes, which is PLENTY of time for us to get attached to every character on an individual level. We don't really have that luxury here, so them giving Ceras the respect her character *_DESERVES_* instead of skimping out on it in favor of getting to Alucard quicker is one of the many reasons I respect TFS.

oh, something to keep in mind. The original did play up that Pip and Seras were developing a relationship more. Right before he dies in the original, he begs Seras to drink his blood so she has the strength to get away. Zorin insults him, calls him an insect, and Seras just snaps. She does drink his blood...and then yeah, goes on an utter rampage and obliterates Zorin. She was causing road rash by dragging Zorin's head across the wall so badly that all that was left was the skin off the side of her head. Flesh, bone, brain, eyes? All scraped away by sheer friction.

You're absolutely right Bethany around the 15 minute mark. Seras spends a lot of time feeling like Alucard's shadow because for all intents and purposes she is. At least up until this point. What the abridged doesn't have much time to touch on is just how much she's desperately trying to hold on to the last remnants of her perceived humanity. She has no major vampire powers like him because she refuses to drink blood (via a bite) the same way Alucard does. Seras has a micro coming of age story alongside this macro plot that takes center stage and I think it hits a lot harder when you see how it plays out in the original. And then there's Integra. The abridged does well to show her badassery, but you'd really need to see the original to understand just how...resilient(?) she is. To see the core of inner strength she has as a person. When I first watched the show I was about 17ish, and now I'm a year older than Integra is and she's definitely a stronger person than I am lol. I'd strongly encourage watching the normal series either on your own time or as a reaction because it's a pretty emotional ride (at least for me) towards the end. I had to get a personal friend of mine to watch the abridged version before convincing him to give the original series a chance lol.

Seras became a full fledged vampire after draining Pip's body of blood. She had not consumed an entire body of blood up until this point. To sustain her thirst she was fed droplets of Integra's blood. The scene was edited to make it look erotic, but it's more about Seras just needing her daily intake. :) And given that she is the progeny of Alucard, yeah, Zoran had no shot. Zoran also realizes she screwed herself when she ranted about no one doing recon and instantly realizing she deviated from the orders The Major gave her which led to her current predicament. Another thing TFS added is that a Rob Zombie song always plays when she's doing something badass. "Living Dead Girl" was barnone the perfect choice for her awakening scene & where she literally shreds Zoran's head by dragging it across the wall.

The major plan was to remove England big gun. The major used Rip van Winkel as bait for Alucard. To trap him in the middle of the ocean. Since Alucard can't fly and vampire lore say vampires can't cross a body of water. It was the only way for the major and his forces to begin the invasion.

From a writing standpoint, in the unabridged show, the focus was substantially more on Seras as the vehicle for showing the viewer how Hellising and vampires worked. Alucard was written to be so powerful that Seras could have a growth arc more substantial than a "normal" vampire, as well as a guardian/crutch during her periods of learning and reluctance. Stock story writing would have the menotr die, but instead this story makes the actual villain plot centered around managing to sideline him, so then the dramatic plot becomes Seras coming into her own as his scion in his absence, while still letting him return so they can do a grand finale, yada yada.

You're about to get your wish in the next episode in one of the most badass scenes of the series... but before that happens let's talk about how much I loved Seras absolutely wrecking Blitz's face with a freaking wall!!! If that scene could've been anymore awesome I don't know how! I do know that in the original episode Zorin tries to hit Seras with a full force psychotic illusion, but finds her mind fragmented and compartmentalized so that she can't focus on anything other than killing said Nazi vampire, and you find out that it was because Pip willingly gave up his blood to Seras as an act of love. That one act made her essentially immune to anything Zorin could throw at her.

8:51 .. pointing out the sound backing around this clip.. is it's own song, and part of the series proper. it was something otherwordly good for me when i first drank of it. Also, Zorin is gonna get whats coming to her for that miserable recon job. Such an amazing episode. 11:44 so, remember the whole thing with the ship Alucard went out on? this was in the actual story, but he can't freely travel over water it seems (i do recall that as an old Vampire limitation not often discussed, running water), and instead he's trying to steer the wreck of the ship close enough to get back to the action. thats why Van winkle was called "bait". all meant to move alucard out of position as the havoc hit the place.

In Series Explaination: Alucard is on the ship and can't Cross flowing water on his own (Vampire lore stuff) Real World Explaination: They (the orginal) had to somehow get rid of Alucard for a while because... "he is a trump card, if the card literally flipped the table and shot the other players". Like Superman... or Goku... need to be somehow hold away from the action, so you can have actual stakes (no pun intended).

The real life reason alucard is gone, is because the writer made him way too strong, so he was forced to sideline him so he doesnt just kill everyone. So he wrote him being stuck on the boat so as to be able to advance everyone to be able to keep up. Is the best way to put it with no spoilers.

14:09 You have to understand, it was all part of the plan. It was the exact same way in the official series. Alucard was removed intentionally by the Major. Hellsing organization fell into the Major's trap. "We shall plan around ze plan they are planning." No worries, keep watching, you will see. Rip Van Winkle was bait. And Hellsing bit, and vampires cannot cross large bodies of water under their own power, and must take their coffin when they do. It's why Alucard flew the Blackbird, and took his coffin, and why when Alucard and Seras went to Brazil, they took their coffins.

Seras had been refusing to drink blood ever since she got turned into a vampire, probably because she still considered herself human. It was then in that moment that she realized what she really is and ate Pip (as he would have wanted) and unlocked her full potential as a vampire sired by Alucard.

The main reason they took alurcard out is because the Mangaka said they made him too strong. Literally the only way the story can happen was by taking him out which is kinda nuts

Alucard was absent for a good for episodes in the actual show save for some select bits just like the abridged but more or less because he legit was set up to be stuck on a boat in the middle of the ocean, which according to vampire lore, Vampires cannot travel across bodies of watervwithput certain criteria. Alucards is basically taking his coffin with him which is currently in the Blackbord he took to the ship which is conveniently jacknifed into the ship looking like a giant burnt out metal cross. Him being gone was basically integral to Millenium's plan for ransacking London for the time being because its no spoiler to say that coming there while he's around would mean it would be minimal but still a lot of collateral in London but mainly just a one god hax gmod server host versus a thousand invites to the lobby of suffering at said host's hand. Theres more to the overall reason that plays into the big end game goal but the forefront point is Alucard would just end the party early. Also yeah Seras's backstory is so fucked up and dark that Takahata said on the Halloween livestream that the only way to make it a little bearable and relieve some of the tension was essentially making it a dark Monty Python skit. Much like the most horrific parts of Berserk and its grimmdark fantasy setting, it doesnt sugarcoat what happens in the source. Needless to say this and episode 6 are the darkest of the series mainly because of the horrific nature presented while focusing on a ragtag group of humans and one half vamp versus a portion of an army. Essentially a war movie dialed up to eleven but then they accidently broke the dial. Pip is a real one. For as hard as they eventually got wiped thanks to the illusion magic, he basically made the ultimate defense plan for an enemy far out of his field with maybe less than a couple weeks of prep time since his company's introduction to the idea of fighting vampires. No chance they could fight head on against an army of them much less a platoon. Even in the face of death though he goes out like a real one with no fear. Also hes voiced in the english dub by the same VA as Mercury from RWBY Volume 3 and onwards so just imagine Mercury with a French accent and more range and likeable personality than what you've seen of him so far and thats just Pip.

I know you might not see this, but I think the biggest thing that keeps you from truly bonding with half the cast is because the original series was 10 movie-length features. Yeah, we’re talking 1-2 hours of content per episode. Abridged is having to condense that down to 20-30 minutes tops, if that. DBZA has a longer and more drawn out series to work with that had each episode be more segmented chunks of content instead, so they could more easily work with it.

Thing is alucard would just curb stomp anyone who didn’t plan for him. So the Nazis made sure to plan for him EXTENSIVELY. Luring alucard out on a boat in the middle of the ocean where vampires can’t swim so his only choice is to sail the boat back normally, which will allow them to make some actual progress in their attacks

As probably mentioned a couple of times. The whole first couple of episodes where nothing more then a chess game to put Alucard in the exact position he is in. Sometimes you hear talk about plans being a form of 3D chess. The major is an actual master. When you think about it, it is scary how good he is. Just about everything is going as he planned. I say "just about", since someone didn't want to do reconnaissance and got a fistful of police girl all over the wall. Then again, maybe he has plans for that case as well... Just have to watch the rest ^^

Alucard is meant to not be in it. The Nazis deliberately baited them to send Alucard to the aircraft carrier to get him out of the way. It's designed that way so you understand just why Alucard is needed & when he returns, you understand why he's been gone for so long, but just so you know if Alucard was around none of the nazis would be a threat of any kind.

Yeah, so the reason that Alucard has been missing the past few episodes is because, both in-story and from a storytelling perspective, he's too overpowered and thus kills all the tension and drama. It's why there's the line in this ep that when Alucard was around things weren't scary and were hilarious. It's the same reason why Superman is always somehow occupied (and other characters have to do the task) or incapacitated in comics, at the start, because he's so powerful that he's the one minute solution to every problem. So Kouta Hirano (the creator of Hellsing) took Alucard away to develop the invasion crisis storytelling wise, and in-story the major's plan did it for the same reason. The whole aircraft carrier bit with Rip Van Winkle was bait. It's why they keep saying that "she is begging for/demands attention" because her only purpose was to take him off the chessboard. Also, if you've noticed that they didnt do the "Party party party" theme song the past few episodes since Alucard is stuck on the carrier, it's because Alucard IS the party

So the main reason why Alucard is absent from this section of the story is because he's designed to be monstrously overpowered compared to effectively everyone else in the story. If he were around he'd have shut this shit down immediately before anything dire and thus dramatically interesting could happen. Kinda similar to why Goku is absent for so much of DBZ
