Something I found interesting, in all the wife's screaming and complaining, not once does she mention being heartbroken or betrayed. I don't believe that she loves him. She's she is simply insulted that he's choosing to sleep with an imp (Hell's lowest form of life) Rather than somebody of their own aristocracy. She's not upset that he's cheating she's upset with who he's cheating with. She also gives off the vibe that she does not in fact care for her child. As a matter of fact this feels a hell of a lot like an arranged aristocracy marriage. Or the fact that the dad might be gay but still loves his daughter.

Even with how unstable and toxic Stolas' relationship is with his wife as well as his lifestyle; given how much expectation he's forced to deal with in terms of his status and his sexuality, Octavia is physical proof of what good came out of it. With how twisted it is with Stolas, he's shown to be capable of demonstrating pure unconditional love for his daughter.

You can tell from the flashback as well as the final talk that regardless of Stolas' behavior, Octavia has a deep connection to him. This is likely because Stolas was literally the only one who was ever there for her. You do see that, Stolas' wife refuses to get out of bed to comfort her daughter. There's always going to be that natural connection between a mother and her child, but the connection Octavia and Stolas is there too. The discord between Stolas and his wife is literally destroying Octavia mentally, because she's torn between the one who literally birthed her and the one who was always there for her. In Short, see P!nk's music video 'Family Portait' for another look at that kind of dilemma. I'm writing a similar one in my story too.

Goth clothing, sad music, the quote "Are you two done yelling for the day?" all point that this episode likely didn't take place right after the pilot. It's a lot more likely that they've been fighting/unhappy for a long time. Even if you take Season 2 out of it, with the flashback episode. You could still come to the conclusion that this isn't a happy household. Just figure I'd mention that, since I don't see ANYONE else say it. Octavia's definitely acting like a troubled teen who has lived in an unhappy house for more than a day or two, or even a week wouldn't make someone behave like this and so set in their ways about it in angsty teen mode.
