need to practice manual steering on open sea ,turn the steering wheel like driving a car, I think the vessel is in ballast condition,helsman is already tired due to right part of steering wheel is occupied by left hand

Ineresting video! I see he keeps he’s hand on the wheel at all time, so if he let’s go of it the wheel and rudder will go back to mid ship? Or does it stay turned like on a small boat or a car?

No it stay where you point it it will not turn back to midship..he just done that so that he can manage to turn the steering wheel immediately when ever there's a command.. Specially in making the ship steady

A Helmsman is usually an E3 and below on a US Navy ship. Unless you're on the sea & anchor detail, then it's usually a QM3 or QM2.
