Hey Matt, mopar dealer tech here. You had the right idea with trying to get the trans out of park but that park release lever is spring loaded so trying to keep it released the way you were doing it is difficult. Those transmissions with the turn dial shifter are fully electronic and will only shift out of park by turning shift knob if the engine is running. That cable that you popped off the trans is the manual park release cable and it runs up into the cab. There is a square panel to the left of the steering wheel and underneath the headlight knob. If you pop that cover off there is an orange loop of rope attached to a plastic housing sitting horizontally. Using a small screwdriver or something you release the lock and pull the rope out until it locks in the released position and it takes the trans out of park

Left hand side above parking brake release (I believe) there is a cover, pop that off and there is a little red handle that puts it in neutral. Hopefully this helps for next time

This. I was just going to say this. The 8 Speed ZF's are so common, a quick google or owner's manual check would show where the lever to disengage the trans for towing is. In the center console on the cars.

A helpful suggestion. Mechanical issues aside. In ridge top recoveries you need to get the tow rope set up so that 100% of the energy is pulling the vehicle uphill rather than into the hill. When there are no conveniently located big tree trunks to which a snatch block can be attached high up on a strong trunk (to change the pulling direction to an uphill direction) an old trick is to place a spare wheel (on edge & in line with the rope pulling direction) on the crest with the rope running over the top of the wheel so that the wheel will role with the rope as you pull. This will (for short 3-4 foot bursts) provide the needed change of direction for the pulling direction. You will need to reset the wheel back to the crest two or three times (to maintain the vertical pull direction) as the towed vehicle makes its way up the slope. The bigger the wheel the better. A rim though smaller (requiring more sets) will help prevent the rope rolling off the top of the tyre when it gets to the side wall. It is also great at getting vehicles up out of bogs when suction needs to be broken. YAW

I found you guys' channel by chance because of a shout out on superfastmatt's Death Valley flood video from August 10th. Thank you for the work you do. Back around 1988 my husband and I were tooling around in the forests in the western side of the Sierra Nevadas in his 4wd pickup. He tried driving through logging truck ruts after the rain...we barely got out of one deep enough to let water in the doors. A while later we were up above the snowline and this time got stuck on a jeep trail. Wheelbase was a little long for the terrain and we were unable to move. Really remote place, too. We wondered what we would do, when some dude with a short wheelbase jeep or bronco type vehicle with a warn winch and a vanity plate containing the word "hero" rolled up the hill and stopped to pull us out. Remember, no cell phones back then, and we were in wilderness anyhow. So this guy dragged us out of the bad spot and refused payment. Truly a hero. We got the chance to pay it forward a couple years later when we were up way above Paradise CA in the snow, and found a couple whose pickup had broken down. We had no winch but we gave them a ride in our truck back down the mountain to civilization so they could make arrangements to retrieve their vehicle. Been long years since those adventurous days and I miss the West (I've lived in Wisconsin over 25 years) but I sure like seeing folks like you helping others.

Next time, you can manually put a truck like that (RAM) into neutral by using the manual override on the lower left side of the panel. It's under a plastic cover just under the light switch.

What I find helps in recoveries like that when you are trying to pull someone back over a crest, it to use a spare tire. Stand it upright on the crest on the side where the stuck vehicle is and run the rope over the top. That way you get an element of lift on the stricken vehicle and you rope doesn’t dig into the top of the hill like a cheese wire

The guys from 4WD 24/7 in Australia have done this a couple times when they were bogged to get the vehicle to lift out of the suction of the mud.

Yep that method works in a lot of situations. I've pulled out unwanted bushes, posts but not a vehicle yet but I'm sure it would have given the lift needed in this situation. He would have to use the customers because I don't think Matt carries a spare in any of his rigs, he just calls for help like when he runs out of gas. Hope he sees your comment so he can add it to his bag of tricks.

Hey Matt. Just for future info. On the Ram there is a park override in the cab. Its located behind a small panel on the left side of the steering wheel just below your left knee. The panel just pops out and in there is a park release switch. You can have a look at the owners manual as well.

Matt, to get a non-running RAM with a dial gear selector into neutral, use a flat tool to open the Manual Park Release access cover which is just below the Electric Park Brake switch (below and to the left of the steering column). Press the brake and pull on the orange strap until it locks into place. Now you’re out of park! No getting under the truck. No phone chargers as tie downs. Love your channel. PS, it’s in the manual… 🙂

Matt, you might also want to consider adding a sturdy A-frame apparatus to your equipment. Basically, you'd put it under the winch cable to provide some upward lift. I've used them with great success in winching heavy vehicles over obstacles, out of mud holes, etc. One even 5' tall provides a huge amount of leverage. You could mount it to the roof for transporting it.

Hey Matt! There is a panel right above the parking brake that you can pop off. Inside there is an orange strap you can pull to disengage the park function on those knob transmissions. Hopefully that will make your life easier next time. Love the videos.

@@davidwoermansr It's not many for sure, but folks do die every year working on vehicles. Our company lost a guy two years ago and there was a big to-do about it. Obviously. So, yeah, it's in the back of my mind. But, to watch Matt point at his Caution sign a few videos back, then weld without a shield, and then pull this stunt... it only takes one mishap to lose an eye or your life. You can't 100% guarantee that a cable or rope won't snap. I'm actually surprised at the lack of use of safety glasses by Rory, Paul, and Matt. 🤷‍♂

@@2200Z I've welded since a teenager with no helmet never wore safety glasses and at home still weld in short only never had major burns and still have perfect vision well into my 40s closer to 50 I wouldn't weld without a helmet unless you have someone show you how to shield your eyes and yet see what you're doing an 80 year old welding shop owner showed me while I worked for him as a teenager he didn't wear glasses at 80 and never had flash burn eyes and never wore a helmet his entire life there's a trick to hiding the flash with your hands and the stinger yet still being able to see the puddle and material as for taking that truck out of park I'd have done it without the Jeep hooked it's only going 1 way giving you plenty of time to roll out as deep as the nose was dug in and the parking brake would keep the rear tires from rolling

Great recovery, especially in 112 F heat. As someone with engineering background, recoveries like this make me wonder what would happen if the shank on receiver broke and flung the back to pulling vehicle - could be catastrophic. While I'm sure the 2" receiver shank to the pintle hook was rated higher than the truck weight, however, with the truck pointed down hill and in park, the dynamic loads could easily be more than rated capacity of the pintle or shank ? Matts awesome experience and knowledge is impressive given all the variables that must be considered to do each and every job safely.

Those yankum ropes don't fly like chain cable or other tow ropes you'd think the way they stretch they would but we had a towhook break yanking 1 out of the mud and the rope just dropped to the ground and barely recoiled the broken hook flew farther than the rope it defied all logic

@@dartmoordave they had hooked to a cheap thin shank ball with a load rating of 5000 lbs that pintle hitch they use has a load limit higher than the rope so the rope is the weak link

Hey Matt's off road recovery...if you are looking to get that in neutral with the turn knows on the lower part of the driver side right about where your left knee would be there is a panel stick something in the bottom to pop it of there is a orange or red strap pull it and it will put it in emergency neutral so you don't have to get underneath that especially on a hill like that and to put it back in gear pull slightly and get a small flathead screwdriver there is a little tab pretty sure you will see it push tab and release that strap .. hope this helps

@mattsoffroadrecovery, Wish i could of shared this prior to you needing it, But on those Mopar Transmissions with that dial type shifter, have a disengage lever in the cab. Ram puts it above the Parking brake release handle behind that small panel. Jeep they are in the center consol. Its a Red or Orange strap pull till it clicks. its there for towing so if a car is in a wreck or a no start situation it can be easily moved. Pro Tip from a Mopar Technician. Hope this helps for next time.

Lay a canvas tarp under the winch rope, set it up as a double line pull, choke all the wheels on the Jeep and give it a small amount of slack then play with the truck to see if it’s rolling. You could use another truck as a anchor and he could of brought a key cam with some diesel to try and fire that truck up? 🤷🏻‍♂️ Great video as always plus I’ve only just seen the video on your court case it’s good to see it worked out ok in the end Matt👍🏻

What? He didn't know jackshit about this Mopar drivetrain. There's a cover on the dash that you pop off and pull the rope behind it to release the pin on the output shaft of the tranny so the driveshaft can spin freely. It's called a Manual Park Release Pull Strap owners.mopar.ca/en/manuals/2017/2017E-RAM-15_25_35-OM-4th.pdf Page 605. There's a bunch of folks that know about it in these comments. Matt jury-rigged a phone cord. lol

Matt, the electric transfer cases has a neutral release lever inside the vehicle. On the RAM 1500 it is on the left side of the dash hidden behind plastic cover & on the Grand Cherokee it is at the back of the center console.

Matt, would it be possible to build a heavy duty tripod (maybe 24”-36” high) with a pulley on top. Then you could run your winch cable over it at the edge of the drop and gain that vertical pull you need? It would also stop your line from getting buried, and lessen the wear on the cable and kinetic ropes. Be well.

Matts always on about weight reduction. He doesn't carry fuel, compressor or tools so a heavy tripod has no chance for a once in a blue moon job.

@@graememckay9972 yeah, I hear you. I was thinking of a hinged unit, but it would be heavy. You have to admit, a little extra fuel could have saved a whole lot of head ache on this job. Such a hard balance to strike I would imagine, as far as what you need to take most. Be well.

That was mad sketchy! It’s really interesting to hear a bit of a breakdown on your thought process as you go through this job. It goes to show that they don’t typically go to, or follow any kind of plan. Question, if you had put in 5, or even say 10 gallons of diesel in the tank, do you think that would have been enough to cover the pickup and allow it to fire? Great job as usual, so glad you didn’t have a truck roll over your chest. Oh, and I guess now you have to worry about losing Skeeter to the Olympics in discus.

I’m not sure how it works for those dodge trucks but most cars have a little plastic cut out piece that you can pop out and insert a think tube like object such as a pen to manually move the shifter when the car is off or battery is dead .

My guess is, there WAS some fuel, but at that angle, it was not at the pump to be sucked into the engine. Which means, not much in the tank to begin with.

job done! However, there is an interesting solution in such a situation that would probably help. Under the rope, you put a spare wheel in a vertical position, which rolls with the rope when pulling it out. What does it give you, firstly: it changes the angle of the rope to the correct one, and secondly: you get rid of the additional load in the form of friction and possible damage and tearing of the rope by the ground/rocks. Of course, it is important that the vehicles are positioned as straight as possible, but here it was possible. Greetings from Poland, great video as usual

After watching some of the videos where they were pulling a larger pickup like this from the receiver and the hitch failed and goes flying into the windshield resulting in deaths, I have a different view of some of these recoveries. Matt has been doing this for years and is an expert in all of this rigging and knows this, but this is some dangerous work. Especially something that is this heavy that could drag both vehicles down the hill, and is also putting some of the highest loads on the cables and equipment. I notices after the initial lighter tug on the hitch Matt switched to the soft shackle on that axle. Who would thing the soft shackle has many times the failure load rating of the hitch. The other thing I saw Matt do on another recovery was just raise the hood when pulling forward which then acts as a shield for the windshield and driver if there is a failure. Might have saved the guy in Colorado when a poorly rigged hitch failed and came back through the windshield.

The pintle hitch has a much higher rating than those soft shackles. Just when Matt switched to the kinetic rope he needed the pintle hitch in the banana’s receiver.

When he was pulling on the receiver in the truck, he was using the winch, not doing an attempted kinetic recovery with a non-kinetic strap. A lot less force than a yank. Also, when he saw the winch was not moving the truck, he didn't keep winching. Once he switched to the kinetic rope, he was using soft shackles on the truck. Every recovery is unique.

Some good points here. Yes, this is dangerous work. I watched the video from Colorado 4X4 Rescue & Recovery: Breaking Down the Arizona Fatal Off-road Recovery. Sad story and I’m thinking this accident was perpetrated as a copy-cat recovery using the kinetic energy / Yankum rope technique, but with the wrong gear. Honestly, I think Matt needs to add a disclaimer to the beginning of all his rescue videos saying in so many words: I’m a professional. Don’t try these techniques yourself. I used to do similar work, but on the water in San Juan County Washington. I did that work for 30 years and occasionally used the kinetic energy yank-um off the beach technique. All my gear was oversized and I never had any gear failures or accidents. There have been deaths due to cleats being pulled out. One such case at Disneyland on the riverboat ride. The synthetic winch line he uses is much safer than steel cable normally used. It doesn’t store as much energy as steel line does under tension, and has a significant amount less recoil under failure. Still need to be careful, but a lot of the danger from failure has been eliminated.

I'm not surprised the transmission is weird. It's a german ZF 8speed now built under license by RAM. All electronic interface, I don't know how they work either. My last rebuild of my TH350 was 13 yrs ago and cost me all of $425. lol And I know how that one works!

Hi Matt & Team You could of used a spare tire, drop a bit of air out of it then put the winch rope on it to help lift the back of the car off the ground or just enough to help. Done this heaps of times in mud. Thanks Love the show Cheers
