I used to be a field damage appraiser in the insurance industry. More than once I entered a wrecked Outback double-checking my file notes to see how many occupants died. Just like the commercial, “they walked away!” I was absolutely impressed at the structural rigidity of Subaru’s use of high strength steel and safety cage when I learned nobody succumbed due to injuries. My sister in law had a 2011 and pulled RIGHT out in front of a car 90* to her right at a bad intersection. Sun was in her eyes and the other car t-boned her at every bit of 55 mp/h. They ended up in the hospital as the striking car. My sis was able to still open her door and get out. I could still open and shut all but the PS front door (impact area) and the glove box still opened and closed. They’re engineering safety into these from the inside-out!!

Great video Wizard! I recently had a problem with my 2016 Honda Pilot. Driving home every system warning on the dash lit up (powertrain, traction control, emissions, brake failure, towing assist!) , power was reduced, and I was left to limp off the highway. When the mechanics checked it out, it was a cam sensor that went bad (out of spec camshaft had play that damaged the sensor). So after seeing this video I now know all those lights were literally there to "get my attention". Great job Sir!

Yep, I've got a 2011 Outback non-PZEV and one fault code will set off multiple warnings and disable cruise control. I have a soft spot for those early Outback Tourings (2017), especially in Lapis Blue Pearl! Thanks for the video, Wizard! The ride height sensor is actually just for the auto-leveling HID headlights. The models with halogen headlights don't have ride height sensors. It doesn't have anything to do with traction control. In regards to head gasket issues: this was primarily the naturally aspirated EJ25 (2.5 L) which was used up to the 2012 model year. The FB series started replacing the EJ in the 2011 model year. The FB, FA and EZ (6 cylinder) engines do not have head gasket issues. You can tell the FB and FA apart from the EJ by the oil filter located on top and metal timing chain cover (instead of plastic timing belt cover).

Lapis Blue Pearl is beautiful! I'd almost buy one for the color. The FB engines don't have the head gasket issue anymore but the cam carriers loooove to leak and that's another engine out job and tend to burn oil worse than the older engines. The 3.6 is a nice engine but, like every other Subaru, also loves to leak and we've even done a few head gasket jobs on those. And if you have a 3leaker (liter) in a Tribeca run! Not enough engine for that car, 160-180k miles and the repairs it needs match the value of the car.

In training classes pre-virus we learned about coming vehicle warning systems. Due to emissions regulations and federal mandates cars will give warnings at different levels, depending on the severity. If it’s an emissions issue, newer cars will give a light at first, then a blinking light, then if the vehicle keeps being driven without repairs a speed reduced soon warning, then a speed reduction, then a 5 mph maximum speed. This will be across all manufacturers, since it’s mandated and out of their hands. It won’t be long before older cars are not legal on public roads and will be for show and museum display only. From the mouth of a manufacturer engineer.

They need to find some way to scare you to get to the dealer but not in danger you at the same time. Perhaps an annoying chime or buzzer that you can't turn off.
@st_us3 жыл бұрын
@@kens97sto171 See, that's what I meant. A misfire means unburnt fuel which washes the oil Film on cylinder Walls and Lands in the catalytic converter and heats it up. Later people blame it on the manufacturer, cause no one wants to blame himself.
@kens97sto1713 жыл бұрын
@@st_us Absolutely true. But there needs to be some kind of balance between the manufacturer trying to get it repaired as quickly as possible with an effective warning. And going way overboard by turning the air conditioning off or scaring the shit out of people. Imagine driving down the road in a minor misfire occurs that you didn't even feel but all of a sudden every fucking light on the dash pops on. So you rapidly pull over on the side of the road and cause an accident, or while you're sitting on the side of the road someone hits your car. There is some kind of balance that needs to be found. So that things get repaired in a timely fashion but also don't go overboard. And as I also said things like this are what will be the nail in the coffin for internal combustion. Eventually people are going to get sick of dealing with these minor issues that end up costing them big bucks at repair shops or dealerships. And when that next electric vehicle becomes affordable they're going to be all over it. Thinking that that is going to solve all problems. And it won't let your vehicles are complicated also just because they don't have internal combustion engines doesn't mean they don't have a lot of secondary support systems. However there won't be this emissions compliance nonsense and warning lights are likely only to go on when there is something that's actually important regarding the vehicle. Like a low coolant sensor or an overheat sensor etc

So I blew trailer braklights while on my way, so Audi decided to disable adaptive cruise. Gasstation stop, bulbs swapped, it started to work again. Another one. Aftermarket parking sensor made car go nuts - parking assist and even adaptive cruise was disabled (lane keep threw a code as well). Weird stuff. Ride height level sensor - no ACC.

Wizard, you are absolutely right about newer cars. They try to make it impossible for an average person to fix them. I myself have an 08 Aveo that hasn’t been on the road in 2 years just because I replaced the throttle body and now it needs the throttle learning reset. Simple job just takes a few minutes. But I can’t afford the tool to do it, and can’t afford the high dealership repair prices either. So for now it sits in the garage.

I own a 2014 Outback with the 2.5 L with at the time 135,000 miles. While on a road trip out west, in the middle of Montana (with no cell service), the check engine light came on, the brake light started flashing and the cruise control light also started flashing. This scared the hell out of us since we were in the middle of nowhere. The owners manual was nothing but doom and gloom. "Pull over as soon as possible and call roadside assistance". After a few hundred miles extra of driving these lights turned off. They do turn on again sometimes, but will eventually turn back off. What confused me at the time about the lights is that they are all 3 separate systems that have nothing to do with each other. Thank you for bringing up this issue with the (newer) Subaru's!

This is the first time I disagree with The Wizard. Subarus are not good cars. My company has a fleet of 20+ Foresters and Outbacks. Both 4 and 6 cylinder. They are terrible quality vehicles that are hard to keep on the road. We used crown vics and explorers for years and many of those had 300,000 or more miles on them. Then our company was bought by a huge company in 2012. Come to find out the CEO owns a subaru dealership. So naturally he gets a kick back and we are forced to drive these pieces of trash. They get horrible gas mileage12-14mpg (my explorer got 17-19). They have no power. Most of us fear for our life getting on the interstate. Each oil change we find the Subarus are down 1-2 quart of oil. The AC goes out in them all the time. The interior creaks, the body panels are worse than 1st gen Tesla. I have had recalls show up in the dozens in my mail box. Please do not buy a Subaru. Toyota should be ashamed to own this company. Edit: 3 of the last 4 subarus we got in had to go back to the dealer to have the back wiring harness replaced. The rear windows stopped working day after delivery.

Why the different lights come on is because the moduls uses each others sensors and data to work properly. The moduls "talk" to each other over a CAN-network and when one of them doesn’t do that correctly they throw a light on. Some moduls are more dependent of each other and then there are moduls that aren't. The engine or PCM is one of the more central moduls in the car.

This is the “dealer okie doke”. Your 4 YEAR OLD car has a problem. You, not trusting regular shops - or still having a warranty - take it to the dealer. They “check it out”. If it is under warranty, they fix it, but bill overtime so they get paid more by the company. If you THINK you have a warranty, they’ll tell you that you DON’T (anymore) because of mileage or age. Or that it doesn’t cover the issue(s). Then, they’ll tell you they can fix it, but it’s gonna cost (A LOT). And “we’ve had plenty of these newer cars do this.” They’ll suggest getting a “new” car because it’s only going to get worse over time. “It’ll cost $2000-$3000 to fix all these issues. You could use that as a down payment on a NEW one! NEW warranty, No problems.” When it was only $60 to fix the issue. Dealer Okie doke
@houseofno3 жыл бұрын
WOW, you don't know much about the car industry, do you? Doesn't work that way. The factory produces "book times" for ALL repairs. They don't pay "overtime." If the service manual indicates a job takes three hours, the tech has three hours to fix it. PERIOD. If they fix it in less than three hours, the service center is reimbursed by the factory. The difference between what the factory reimburses them for and what it actually cost the service center to repair it is profit. If it takes more than three hours, the dealership or service center LOSES money because the factory won't pay more than the book value for the repair. The factory doesn't pay "overtime" for warranty work. Stop believing everything you read on the internet.

Interestingly it had (at least partially) to do with the way coolant sat in the boxer heads with the engine off causing electrolytic corrosion. Part of the solution was better grounding of the engine components.

Hyundai and Kia are too. They are just as bad if not worse. Nissans are bad too except for their pickups and sports cars. My advice: don’t buy any Hyundai or Kia especially the ones that have the four cylinder engines. Hyundai and Kia are known to deny warranty claims on blown engines regardless of maintenance.

I had a cam sensor go in a 2015 Jeep Wrangler and when the check engine light came on for it, it caused traction control light to come on locking up left rear brake slightly enough to smell burning brakes when I stopped. Reset of key resolved traction control but not cam sensor unless I cleared and it came back when I hit 75mph. Changed cam sensor after reading code for it, fixed all problems.

Replacing a bulb on the trailer attached (don't do it that way!) to my 2015 Outback I blowed a fuse of the Brake light. Suddenly the car didn't want to turn on. I have to review several youtube channel and forum to finally realize that the cause was the the blown fuse! 3 hours late because of a simple bulb change.
