Finley (my little 8 month old) tried moving my feet and getting pushy with me when I was feeding him. I chased him away from me right quick and every time he would try and come in without asking, I would move him away again. The second he dropped his head and asked politely I let him come back in again. He knows now he can't move my feet, and if he tries it again when I'm feeding my boys their apples and carrots, I'll chase him away from me again and again. He needs to learn, that's my responsibility (Thanks for showing all of us who truly want to learn what to look for and what to do for bettering their lives) I love that when I have a question, I know not to.come running to you to ask things. I know to research all your videos, watch videos with horsemen who understand horses for my answers. You taught me that years ago. When I first started working with my boy, Bean (rip sweet boy) 9 years ago and I had problems with him kicking when I was doing his feet (for example) or not knowing what to do when he did something I wasn't sure about - I would read and research and solve my problems on my own. It made me a better person, made me worthy of my beautiful boy. That really is all thanks to you, Rick. I learned to look at myself and think very critically about what I was doing to make Bean do things like spin his butt at me, or rear up or get nervous. I knew to look at myself and to work hard on myself for Beaner's sake- because you taught me. I'll always be grateful for that. My two boys that I got this summer are benefitting from your knowledge so much. After Beaner passed away in 2016 I couldn't come to your channel. Losing Bean was devastating and it was hard watching your videos for a long time. I'm back now, and forever grateful. Thanks again for all that you do. My new boys thank you for it too 💜

I’m totally with you on this Rick. It’s not the type of question you can just answer and “fix” the problem. And there is for SURE more than 1 problem with this horse. Hearing she’s feeding him from “outside” of the fence tells me everything I need to know. Green+Green=Black and Blue. Period. This is a dangerous situation. Easily corrected if the corrections are timed well and consistent. (And if the bad behaviors are seen immediately and nipped in the bud) Concerning overall. The organism does what works for the organism.

@@C.Hawkshaw So true! And then when the dog or horse "acts up", they give it back. Taking responsibility for another living being requires more than just food and water. People have to have time to dedicate to any animal, no matter the species. ..ESPECIALLY if was abused/neglected/etc. before they got it. Sadly it always stems from the fact that some people still don't believe animals have feelings, or can understand what's going on around them, and believe they're just here for our personal use.

I would like to know something about the horse from the owner. Tried to kill a child over an apple??? I had an English bulldog that ran towards any child with an ice cream cone, he didn't want the child, just the ice cream cone. Of course, if you have ever seen an English bulldog running towards you, from side to side and slobber coming out of the corners of his mouth, you too would drop your ice cream cone!. "Food aggression" in horses is a pain in the ass to deal with, because it is a lot of consistent work to adjust their behavior to one that is respectful, and that recognizes you as in charge. I've done it, but it took me being the biggest bossiest horse, in the stable, and in the field to overcome it. The fact she didn't respect me around doorways, and around food, was a big clue that it wasn't a food issue, it was a respect issue. Did I like "being mean" to her? No, of course not, I love to have a relationship with my horse that's based on mutual respect and trust, but I had to change our relationship and hierarchy to do that. This woman is in over her head. It's not insurmountable, but she's gonna have to learn quick, or someone is going to get hurt.

I got an animal that I had no knowledge about. I had a friend who needed to put his old horse down but had no way to "dispose" of him. So he brought the horse to my folks cattle ranch so I could put the horse down for him in the boneyard and let wildlife do it's thing. However once on good Bermuda pasture, he began to thrive. 6 months later, I adopted a rescue horse to be his companion and had stalls built in the barn. All while gorging myself with all the horse knowledge I could get my hands on, including Ricks channel. I took riding & horse handling lessons. That horse arrived at age 31 and lived 7 of what were probably the best years of his life, just being a horse and teaching me about horses. I have two horses of my own now and foster other horses for a rescue. It's not about getting an animal you have no knowledge about, it's about being smart enough to educate yourself.

The problem these days is that people get a horse like a pet and expect him to act like a bunny... The same with dogs. People have no idea what a horse needs, what a dog needs and then they are surprised that horse is bucking and dog is biting.... In last six months I had about ten people asking me for help with feeding time - NONE was a food problem. The lack of knowledge caused the problem with the food... Great video Rick!!!! I couldn't agree more. Ideal primarily with what people call problematic animals. Mostly dogs cats parrots and large constrictors. Literally everything he says can be applied to all of these animals because not one of these animals has been problematic for me in my lifetime and I'm 53. The problem is always humans not learning the language of the animal and expecting the animal to learn the language of the human. That is where the problem usually begins from the time their baby animals. Each animal has a different language but you can still apply everything he says to these animals

@@carrieannaenlow9479 Oh hell no, no nono. That would only make things worse, if anything, how did you get that idea? X'D If anything, considering the massive lack of knowledge about food agression and whatnot, just stay away from him when feeding him. Simple as that. There are ways to fix food aggression, but there is no easy internet solution. (And I myself only know how to fix certain types of food aggression in dogs, so I'll refrain from giving advice.) People would need to know the horse, the behavior, the exact circumstances of the situation. There's no one cure-all option for animal behavior as it cannot be lumped together. Too many factors play a big role in it all. You COULD make a video of things that are going on (without editing of course) and ask people for advice and to reply to it, but don't expect to be encountered with fluffy cotton gloves. Rick here for example is known to be quite frank and he doesn't care about people's feelings getting hurt by being told his opinions or his type of humor, but maybe he will reply again if you show him some video material. It's at least better than just describing the situation you have going on. There is too much lack of info and we only get to 'hear' one side of the story as well, as the horse may tell a different story from what you percieve things to be like.

@Elsie Just because you did something for a long time, doesn't mean you've done it right. That's reality, my friend. And there is an incredible amount of that sound in the horseworld especially in case you aren't aware. [insert yeehaw cowboy wanna-be horse breaking vidoes here] Sending someone random an e-mail, assuming she really DID NOT know Rick's personality, is no reason for the other party to change their behavior. Rick is someone that doesn't care about people's feelings getting hurt just because they are being told his opinion. And isn't that exactly what a question towards him should yield? If someone asks him a question, it's fair to assume it's someone that knows him and his personality. If not...that's really not his problem since said person came to him. And please don't lie. He never encourages 'bullying', he doesn't even encourage people to look up others' videos or whatever to comment and such. Please don't lie just because you seem to dislike him/his personality. He's not bad at 'peopling' either, his personality is just not the kind everyone can deal with that wants to be treated like a fragile glass figurine. He'll tell people they fucked up if they fucked up, there's nothing wrong with that. Just because someone online comes asking questions, doesn't mean someone has to adapt a calm, gentle attitude in assumtion that the person can't deal with him otherwise. And if that's what you expect...you shouldn't go out into the world. You'll have a really bad time. Especially when asking questions to strangers, that openly show their personality in every clip they post (mind you). And even more so if it's almost part of the basics for owning an animal. As I said: Just because you did something for a long time, doesn't mean you did it right.

It could be she was sold a pretty good horse and turned it "food aggressive" just by letting it get in her space like Ransom was doing putting his head in the bucket before Rick could put it down. Yeah when you were reading her question I was ah dominance issue. She needs a trainer that can teach her how to correct this behavior or be able to teach others on that farm how to not allow him to dominated over them. Poor horse in the wrong place and he will pay the price. When you brought up people buying horses that have not done thier research on what the genders look like. Reminded me of my cousin's predicament. She bought two hamsters from a pet store. Told both are female just one is older and that was why it looks different. When visiting her one time and she was showing them off. I grow up on a farm and this happened when I was 8 years old, while handling the pets. I noticed one was a female but the other one was a male. Said she needs to separate them or babies will come along. She didn't believe me because the pet store clerk told her and her mom, I said age would not change the genitalia area that much. She goes crying to her parents, my grandparents and her parents argued about it. All adults took a look her parents were clueless, my grandparents knowing animals and working with livestock said I was right. A trip to a vet and confirmed I was right. But too late, female was already pregnant. They separated them, but pups mature fast and they never separated the boy pups fast enough to not get mom and sisters pregnant. I three litters later from mom and siblings before they gotten rid of them.

@@carrieannaenlow9479 sometimes that will not work. It's different with each horse and each situation. I took care of an older gelding that was extremely aggressive at feeding time . It took months maybe over a year of keeping the same routine , feeding around same time every day, some days I would get closer some days no where near him. It's a difficult situation that there's probably not 1 solution or 2 or 3 solutions too. Patience and time and caution. I could never fully trust this old gelding and the sad part is he probably thought he could never trust a human. For what ever reason. I just knew I couldn't 'fix' him but he and I learned to be around one another.
@joymaddox4279

The gelding I'm speaking about was beyond my knowledge to fix him. There's nothing wrong in admitting that nor is there nothing to be ashamed of by admitting that. He wasn't mine, I was only in charge of his care for several years. I wasn't trying to train him cause I'm no trainer but I cared for him as well as took care of him. He had the look in his eyes that told me he wanted to behave better but he didn't know how to. All horses are worth saving. How do you not know a horse's sex? The difference is pretty obvious. Cats, well, everything is on the back side, and I've seen people miss balls the size of church bells when they've had the cat since kittenhood, when it really is hard to tell. I stand with my horses and sometimes groom them while they're eating. It's a way to bond, and I've never had to deal with food aggression. I get rescues, and you sometimes don't know what bad lessons they've been taught by ignorant people in the past. Sometimes I can infer, like my sweet mare refusing to let me even give her a treat while I have a hammer in my other hand. We've had her for almost two years, and she's finally waking up from bring a zombie horse and coming to us with obvious pleasure. How would I fix aggression? Two ways. First, ground work to establish who is high horse. You don't need to be mean or beat the crap out of them. Just patiently let thrm know you need to be obeyed and you won't accept a wrong answer. Second, if they charge you in the pasture, stand your ground with something in your hand to make them sorry they tried to run you down. Always walk with confidence thst you ARE the high horse. Third, keep the kids out of the pasture until you know your horses are under control and the kids are old enough to learn horse body language. I don't even know if this is right. It's just the way I'd do it. I'd work with a horse a lot before giving up on it and selling it or put it down.

Before I ever got a horse I spent over a year volunteering at a horse farm to learn how to care for one and how to handle a horse. I think she's afraid of this horse and has no horse experience. Just my opinion. Keep child away until you've worked with the horse and you trust him or her to be calm around the child. You have to spend time on ground manners.

I got the impression the horse was with other horses and the kid was feeding a different horse. So, unless they are all her horses and she owns the property, she may not be able to keep other people away from him. UNLESS she locks him up, which is my concern. Imagine that poor horse locked up 24/7 because she can’t figure out how to control him. Sad.

@@lindalumae on the ranch I volunteered at the owners ran it well. You could get your horse and work with it away from the other horses. There are just too many issues and different scenarios jumping into my head. Rick, I take my hat of for you pointing out the multitude of problems which becomes apparent when reading this person's post. If feeding is causing so many problems, I dread to think what other problems occur between the owner and her horse on a daily basis. I sincerely hope she has sensible, horsemanship knowledgeable people at hand to help her with all her problems. The best advice that I can give to her: Please read Rick's whole website so that you can learn everything you need to know, and watch all his videos on KZbin. Training a horse involves a huge amount of knowledge and experience, and you'll find the knowledge part on Rick's sites. Always remember that every horse learn new things at a different pace, and that training/re-training them is a long process, not a one-off event. Buddy, Mr T, Ransom and Mokie you're good boys! We were walking and she decided the grass in the ditch across the street looked really good. Both times she learned, I was the high horse and it never happened, again. Other than that she kept her opinions to herself. I also, spent every waking moment with her and you can do that at 12. I never whipped her or slapped her but, I'd tie her up and make her let me do what, I wanted like brush, clean her hooves, bathe her and talking to her while doing so. When, the barn has 8/10 horses, someone has to make sure they all have water not just mine. So, I think like a horse, if my horse was out and others wanted out, I'd call the owners an ask if, it was alright to let them out. Like, Rick says ya gotta have that horse/herd mentality so, you become the leader. My horse was 15 & 1/2 hands high, I was 5'2" the way, I saw it was she's 1250 lbs and I was 130 lbs didn't leave much choice for me. Lead or be lead, I'm not a good follower. We were going to enroll our son in equine therapy, but it became a hang up with him being home bound, as he receives therapy in home. We felt it was more important to keep his in home therapy, and since I have horses anyway, I found a nice gelding for him and now he has his own horse! His therapists are even willing to do his therapy on the horse, but he was upset about that and wants to keep Reggie just for himself, Reggie is not for therapy!! 😉 But he started crawling and walking with assistance more after he started "riding" Reggie, and Reggie even taught him how to keep chewing his food!

He was disappointed but he still loves horses now he has never asked me to get him one because he understands that we don't have a proper place to keep one. I am going to see if now he is older if they will let him help out at a stable.

@@carrieannaenlow9479 of course I am.. in fact what is the whole channel following thinking by missing "the point" like that??! ..I think we should all stay in our own lanes. We will keep working on thinking like a horse and you keep doing whatever it is you are doing 🧏‍♀️ (I hope you find the right solution for YOUR problem)

Wow, this is so familiar. Sounds like a hobby horse person. I base it on the fact she has had it for 90 days and knows NOTHING about her horse. So she is boarding in a place where there are other hobby horse people, we know this because someone allowed a child, with an apple to enter a pasture alone. Not her child because she said a child, not mine. At this point, on my ranch, I would wish her luck. A horse requires and deserves more than 2 to 4 hours a week from its owner.

Agreed. I can't ride cause I have to have a total knee replacement. But I go out to where I keep my horse stabled almost every day, even if my knee is hurting like hell, just to groom him, clean his hooves, let him run and roll in the arena. I've had him almost 8 yrs. and never miss more than a day or two to go out and see him.

You have to know about high horse and low horse. You are the low horse cause you are letting this horse push you around. I do have one question if this horse has been trying to bite you when food is around, why in the world would you let a small child go in with an apple? Really!!!! You need to listen to Rick. He knows his stuff with horses. Go watch his videos. He has hundreds of videos on training and check out his website.

Oh man the apple part if this video reminds me of what happened when my brother cared for my horse for a few months for me. Long story short I had to be hospitalized for awhile and then afterwords my baby had to be in the NICU after that's I needed someone to care for my horse. I had to show my brother how to care for my mare before I was hospitalized since he wasn't super knowledgeable but he was doing me a big favor and I didn't have anyone knowledgeableto help at the time.. He apperently brought her apples everyday (even though I told him not to) The kids fed her a slice each everytime. She has always been good with kids and they could run around and she wouldnt bat an eye but I fed her treats a certain way so she wouldn't get treat crazy. Well I came out for a visit after I was released but still recovering. We were out in pasture and my little nephew takes off running and my horse takes off after him and of course my nephew is laughing thinking she was playing a game with him like our dogs do... She thought he had an apple slice for her and apples are her favorite. So hear I am running when I'm not supose to and elbow my horse in the flank to get her out of his path and was able to rip him away before she trampled him. I may not have handled that as good as I should have, I just jumped into action to protect my little nephew. but I was so pissed that he went against what I said. He was just asking for trouble. An example of human error for sure. It didn't me long to correct the problem though but I haven't asked for help since.

I would rather have harsh truth than a glitter covered turd. It is nice when the truth is served to you kindly, but either way I'd still rather have truth over someone telling me what I want to hear, and end up getting in trouble because of it.

At first I thought (In Rick, Barn-witch voice): _Rick you're being so mean!_ Then I remembered this channel's name is called *Think Like A Horse* and all was right in the world.

Something Rick said on one of the first videos I saw years ago was “ A horse decided who is boss every day’. So brilliant that I felt like the proverbial light bulb came on over my head!

@Elsie i don't attribute human emotion to animals. I've seen what man's best friend does to his best friend when he doesn't get fed by his deceased best friend.

@Elsie horse behavior has nothing to do with compassion. It's survival. For the human and the horse. I don't attribute human emotion to animals. WE have to act with compassion because we have the ability to understand how a prey animal might read us
