I believe that the word "unexpected" gets thrown around way too much in the horse world... and I believe it is a great part of how I came to be programmed to be very fearful of horses... I thought of them like ticking time bombs. It's taken a lot to unravel that! People like Rick are very few and far between. By watching videos like this and listening to people who actually know and understand horse behavior/language has helped so much. Because after a while, I've learned that when you can really think like/read a horse, *very little* (if any) is "unexpected".

How can you tell whether a saddle fits and how do you find one that does? Pasture owner is willing to let us test a bunch of her saddles, so we can hopefully find one that fits - and go out and buy a match. Only other way I know would be to guess, buy one and try it - hoping to be able to sell used saddle if it doesn’t fit! We had help picking our first saddle, but it doesn’t fit at all.
@tracynolan71353 жыл бұрын
Right from the start the horse had his ears almost pinned. His stiff body was another good indication that he wasn't relaxed and ready to resist, When I had horses, I always made sure there was nothing dangling when I put a saddle on them. It being a green horse has nothing to do with it. It's all a trust and Technic issue. They didn't even take the time to make sure that the hair under saddle was smooth and there was none laying the wrong direction would could cause a pinching/stabbing sensation. The horse is feeding off of their nervousness.

" He's getting ready to object" I hate to break it to them, but he has been objecting right from the get go! That right there should prove to any doubters, that they don't have a clue about how to read a horses body language. They might have been trying to prove how "well" trained the horse was cause they could saddle it from the right side. Up to the 12:41 minute point of the video, in their minds they believe the horse to be well behaved and well trained. I agree with everything you said on this vid. I will now continue to watch, clenching my teeth the whole way through, you just know this is not going to end well. They call themselves the pros, but in reality, if they keep doing what they are doing, they are going to take a Professionally trained ( safe to say, somebody else trained that horse, no way they did ) horse and turn it aggressive for all their viewers to see. It won't take that horse very long ( a couple of sessions like this one) to get to the point of chasing them out of the round pen ( getting them out of his space) and in doing so showing NORMAL horse behaviors such as biting, kicking striking and rearing . The horse would be doing nothing different than if the humans were horses and showing that much disrespect , he would be doing the same thing to him. That lady is training with emotions, and that is the number three rule in my book. Leave your emotions at home, never bring them to the stable. These people are no doubt blaming the trainer, and most likely the horse. When it is very clear, they made the horse the way it is, not the trainer. Their first mistake was too give the horse 3 months off cause it was " worked for 30 days" and he needs what a holiday?
@kajinsautumn98333 жыл бұрын
Also I'll bet $20 they never went to watch or ask questions while the horse was at the trainers.

When I was training my horses I did months of groundwork. The I would introduce the to the saddle pad. I would let them smell it and put it by them. When they would stand still I would take away the saddle pad. I did that until I could put it on their back. I did it at the horses pace. I did the same thing with the saddle. My horses never bucked. The slow way is the fast way. I would keep things short and sweet.

One thing that sticks out to me so much is the absolute poor physical condition so many horse people are in. She's a friggin' hunch back that looks incredibly aged and elderly (note - people in their 90s can be fit and healthy and able to move because they've remained active) so if you're unable to get your own sh!t sorted out and able to move properly you're not going to be able to effectively communicate with your horse - because your body is going to be stiff and awkward. We all need to look more in the mirror at our behaviour when problems arise. .

The girth appears too small. The O ring on the left side where he cinched is very low compared to the right side. It's down by his leg. If the horse is sensitive as she says, that would explain the bucking. That's like having on a bra all twisted. Or a wonky pair of socks or undies...

These are elderly people who still think in old ways. They have never realized animals have feelings. And every species of animals require certain ways of handling. Feel very sorry for the horse. They will end up breaking it's spirit.
@erynlasgalen19493 жыл бұрын
I beg to differ about elderly people. Mt first horse came to live with me when I was thirteen, followed by many others. I will turn 72 on Sunday. Along the way I picked up a feeling for horse behavior that actually went against what I had been taught as a novice rider and caretaker. They are not big dumb things with a brain the size of a walnut who have to be bullied. They do have feelings and motivations that may not match mine, but thet are real. Oh, boy, all the bad advice I got. In 1962, the only book out there was The Mind of the Horse by Smythe. Later came books on animal psychology by folks like Desmond Morris, and they helped explain what I knew already. I'm so happy I found Rick, because watching his videos I say to myself, aha, so that's what that is called. I never 'show a horse who is boss' , I just make myself big and act like the high horse, calmly tell them what to do with a demeanor that says I mean it. Don't assume that all older people are set in ignorant ways.
@Chelle013 жыл бұрын
I didn't say ALL elderly people if you read it correctly. Am referring to this particular case
@erynlasgalen19493 жыл бұрын
@@Chelle01 I just wanted to clarify that we're not all behind the times. To be fair, it was older people who gave me all the bad advice in my youth. Except the helmet fanatics these days. I'm in agreement with Rick. Horses sre not unpredictably dangerous if you can speak their language. I'd be better off wearing a helmet in the bathtub than while I'm riding or grooming. I also remember really having to go to the mat for my horses with my mother, who had been told by a family friend who raised horses of a reputable slaughterhouse where he sent his horses when they reached the end, and he could attest that they weren't beaten or abused like in some other places. I was absolutely horrified at the idea of turning over an animal who had served me well into the hands of strangers to be killed out of convenience. We had a fight over it when she asked me what I planned to do when the time came. I said I'd have a vet do it humanely if it needed to be done and then I'd dig a big hole, and so I did for almost every one of them who passed. Until I got older and smarter and begain to hire heavy machinery. In worst case, after an unexpected death I'd have a rendering service come. I only had to do that one when the ground was too frozen to dig by hand. Honestly, the idea of sending a horse to slaughter because it was looking old and useless still boils my blood. Just to get paid instead of spending a little money to do the decent thing for a faithful animal. SMH I didn't take much of that guy's horse advice from then on, if I ever did before that.

My observations - Why did a a saddle come out during the times we were shown? The horse was unwilling and inflexible with the groundwork they were asking and had his head so high he was nervous from part 1. Why not just get this horse comfortable and respectful, and trusting on the ground after 3 mo off??? When he drops his head and trusts you then we can put in a bit or move on to other things. I was always taught that issues like we see here started on the ground and you can see this horse was not comfortable and flexible on the ground so why would he be better under saddle? Groundwork is your foundation and if your foundation is broken, your whole house will fall. Other lesson is that you can never make the feet STOP so your goal is to control where they go. They don't do commands like "whoa" but feed off body language and if she is jumpy and scared just. . . he goes OMG even the predator is jumpy and scared. The saddle is still on for the "bucking". Have we done the most basic thing and checked that our gear is fitted properly and not hurting the animal so when I ask him to move out there is no pain??? Stick some fingers under that girth or loosen it up or check it's fit behind the front legs?

Rick, . I have a question about the last horse i rode and the new horse i am currently riding, . The last horse i rode for 5 yrs on horse trails was 24 yrs old Quarter horse 14.5 hands with high withers. Short horse . Hard to keep weight on her, was getting thin..That horse is dead now ( auto accident) accident was 2 weeks ago. She started getting saddle sores at the age of 24, none before that. I am currently riding a 15 yr old Bay Mare Quarter Horse 14.5 hands with high withers, pretty much looks the same as the 24 yr old I was riding . Second time riding this new Bay Quarter Horse and already has a saddle sore . I do a little trotting . I am 64 yrs old . I am weight proportionate , not large and not small.There was no saddle sore when we bought her. Trying to figure what is wrong for them getting saddle sores. Can't blame the horses age. I trail ride with others. Both Horses getting saddle sores. Ive been told different things. I'd like to hear your opinion. I thought the first reason was the horse was getting older and thinning skin and saddle pad was rubbing to hard when i trott. Treating the current saddle sore with peroxide and fresh aloe vera on the wound as i did with the 24 yr old horse and healed nicely. In your opinion is it the thin skin on the horse ( being a high withered horse they seem to be thin skinned on their backs) or is my weight a problem for a horse with high withers or the wrong size saddle? Using the same saddle 16" western saddle? If you could do a Q & A video soon would be great. Thanks for any input on this matter.

i see the horse doesnt know what hes supposed to do, he keeps looking over at them like what do you want me to do, he is being very good about the whole thing despite not having a clue about what they are doing or what they want from him.

They aren’t horse pros by any means. Some people shouldn’t have horses. The horse is absolutely beautiful!

Poor horsy. These folks don't have the knowledge or strength to deal w/ horses. Reminds me of that woman that made her horse fall over backwards & another time run away in traffic. Totally shouldn't be allowed to work w/ horses! Wake up people....know your limitations. Don't blame the horses for your inadequacies. Doubt they take responsibility for anything. Liked Rick's opinion on this!

I tried SO HARD not to SCREAM at the screen! From the start, the horse's ears had me concerned. The human hand being so tight under the chin is so wrong. Tacking up from the right side is bothering me. The horse keeps flinching, or I am? The saddle looks like it does not fit properly. The girth looks like it is not in the right place, am I wrong? I haven't been on a horse in 30 years, so I may be completely out of my skill set, but this ALL looks wrong to me. Rick, Is it just me?
