My horse was abused before I got him. He had these huge scars on and inside his ears from ear twitches that had these spikes on them. Plus, he was in some bad winter conditions where the weather drops to -40 C, so he had some frostbite scarring on his ears too. Anytime someone tried to touch his ears he'd throw his head up. If you kept attempting it he'd rear or bite you. It took about 3 weeks to be able to touch them. He was super tense for it but he allowed it. Then 3-4 more months before I could just touch them without a big to-do about it. By the time a year had passed you'd never have known he had such an issue to begin with (unless you saw the scars). People asked me about it a lot. He had scars ALL over his body. Scars that wrapped around is cannon bone. Scars on his pasterns from being rasped to jump higher. Scars on his face, ribs, haunches. Just COVERED. I appreciate that you understand the good/better/proper way to desensitize horses and help them understand your intentions.

Currently working with my cat to get him comfortable with enzymatic toothpaste and some toothbrushing, while he's still relatively young, so he doesn't develop dental disease like I see in most cats. He's already so good with many things most cats don't trust, that in the long run make him a lot healthier and happier, but I can tell the toothbrush scares him a little. Little at a time and ending on a positive note as you said... I find these concepts very helpful with a cat, too.

Good for you Wormy !! I have to practically sit on my cat but he still manages to spit his oral meds everywhere!! I use an old clean mascara brush for teeth 😬
@WormyLeWorm3 жыл бұрын
@@Emma-pz1fq For oral meds I found it helpful to have that kind of position and use a syringe to give them a tiny bit of water or broth to encourage them to swallow it after getting the meds in, at least with pills, after pushing the pill in the side from the same hand and quickly switching to the syringe. I got very good at it with one of my kitties as he got older. I hope he knows it was what I had to do to help him, though. I found a nice mini toothbrush for cats on amazon; it has 4 small bundles of bristles and he's much more accepting of it than bigger brushes.

Haha this is how most of the horses are at work when we have to apply fly spray by hand to the ears. Great example, will definitely have to do this more often. On a side note, there's a pony that is quite the riot; has learned he can give stupid humans his butt and spin away when they try to brush his ears in the stall... He did that shit to me and I got his butt with the rope. Tried to hide in the corner with his rear facing me LOL. Haven't handled him much in a few months, clearly will be doing so more now that I've seen what he has been learning. I believe 'some' of the people were rough with grooming his ears back in the winter, and he has now learned this is how he avoids it. Can't blame him, I've seen how rough certain individuals were. I also suspect grabbing of the ear was a thing (not cupping). I noticed he prefers a damp cloth to his ears and actually leans in to it, I don't mind this option. Hard when all the humans aren't on the same page...the horse always suffers. I'll be sure to handle him more and get him to a better place, at least with me.. As for everyone else... I want him to do what's best for him 🤣 I will provide consistency, but cannot guarantee others will. Tough with so many hands handling a horse!
