Help! My UArt Pastel Paper is Warped!

UArt Sanded Papers are AMAZING for pastel use, but occasionally (usually with high humidity) they will warp. I have searched a long time to try to find a fix for this problem. Another artist named, Karan Mccaughey, in our Facebook group, shared this trick to flatten out warped UArt paper so I thought I'd make a video since I had such a hard time finding a fix for this challenge.
The effort is worth it because UArt is such a durable paper and also takes other wet mediums if you want to do a wet underpainting beneath your pastel application. I hope this helps!

Thanks Susan for this Video. I only just found it this Morning! It makes me smile. Last week I was doing my first watercolour underpainting on UArt 400 paper. Being happy with the painting, I realized that the paper was buckling where I had used a little bit more water. On top of it, our air was so extremely humid that, I guess, this contributed to the buckling effect. I got my iron out, put it on steam (just to straighten the paper out), laid a regular paper on top of the UArt and steamed it for a few seconds. ... It was already a lot better (although very humid). ... I did this on both sides of the UArt. ... Next step: put it under a layer of books on a hard ground. After 2 days it was still not fully ok. Then, the air was a lot less humid ... and, oh joy, the UArt came back to NORMAL! ... Now I can continue and use my soft pastels to finish off the painting.

I had to come on here to thank you for posting this video. This warped paper has been a major problem for me and I was about to look into mounting it as a solution, but am so glad I don't have to now. This works great! BTW, I don't believe that it's humidity that causes the warping, as I live in a dry desert climate and it's still a huge problem!

I just took the cellophane off my new uart pad and was horrified to see all the sheets spring into a curl!! I had no idea that this would happen so thank you so much for this video. I think it is utterly ridiculous that this company can get away with selling what in essence is a defective product.

I feel the same way and I recently found a paper that is almost just like Uart paper but it doesn’t curl it’s called Fisher and I get the 400 grit. I buy mine from pro art panels. It doesn’t curl at all!

Hey Susan! thanks for another great video. I have a request. If you can find the time can you please make a tutorial about painting sunset clouds? it so hard to get that pink/orange color right and it has always ended up as mud for me. love you!

Thanks for the info. I also have the curling issue with the U-Art - even in the pads, so this will be very helpful. As for Mi-Teintes (I love the Touch papers), try pronouncing as you would Me-Taunts. That's it. I know you got that! Thanks again, sweet sister...take care. See ya over at Monet Café.

You need to take the syeam off on the iron. Its humid and thats what caused the buckling in the first place. How about on a finished piece? Can you still iron it out?

Since the paper is already damp (hence the curling) have you tried ironing without spritzing?

Caz Lee ... that’s a great thought and suggestion, however, this paper had already dried out and still the curling remained. So, wetting it was necessary to reverse the curl. 😊👍🏻💜

Mine always curls up after I do my under painting with alcohol. Can it be ironed at that stage?

I was actually just wondering that myself when my finished painting was still a bit curled up. I'll have to try it with a painting I don't care that much about! Lol! ;)

I've had that happen too, Sue. When this happens I will mount my finished painting to a board. Let me find the video of that process for you.

Uh oh. My UART600 came in a tube. I have my first project with it taped to a board. I hope it flattens itself. Next time I will iron the sheet first. So happy to learn this tip! (Mi Teintes is pronounced halfway between “mee tent” and “mee taint”. The “s” is silent.
