I would totally stick with the Bob Books right now! That's literally all we used when my girl was 4-5 along with like basic phonic worksheets I'd find on free worksheet websites and she latched on to reading and spelling phonetically. She's 8 now and miles ahead of where she "should" be with reading and spelling. I've had a relative who taught kindergarten (who seemed iffy about my homeschooling at the beginning) come and ask me what I was doing and using to teach my daughter because what she was using in her classroom wasn't working 😅 Sometimes simple is the way to go!! I totally get it though- I see all the different curriculum and I can hear it call my name 😆

New homeschooler here. Thanks so much for posting this video! it’s refreshing to have a Mom come on & be indecisive about which curriculum to choose. It’s super helpful to hear how you think through your decisions. Choosing curriculum is daunting for me. I understand why others post their final decisions & other content. But, when AALLLL of the homeschooling content is decided & confident, you start to wonder if you’re alone in the struggle. May God bless you!

Math with Confidence is so good! I feel like it's super under rated. Super hands on and fun for kids. I've used grade kinder through 3rd. It's a solid program for math.

I have used AAR with both of my kids. They are currently in level 2 and level 4. They recently took a standardized exam, and they both scored in the high school range for their reading ability. One child maxed out the test reading score. I will always stand behind AAR! AAR and Math with Confidence was a home run with my kindergartener last year.

I love AAR and their resell value is amazing. So yes it’s expensive, but you can resell it when you are done so easily! My 6 year old is almost done with level 4 and she can read anything.

I would honestly stick with what is working for the reading and maths for the time being. You could always try moving beyond the page in January like you said when you feel he's got his basics up.

I homeschooled my kids and am now helping my kids homeschool theirs. I always remember my math bright child trying to use Saxon ( her older sisters) and absolutely HATING it and we realized each child is so different. Saxon is to spiral even if you skip stuff for some kids. We have 2 grandkids that we are searching for that balance. I agree with you on TGTB … level 3 is good but mostly it’s to all over the place for me …

I used Gather Round Ready to Read for my kinder 4 years ago. We absolutely loved it!!! It’s La and math all in one. Now we are using TGATB, we switched in 2nd grade and it’s awesome. 1st grade we used EIW and Moffat girls math. Yeah, I’m not switching again since I switched so much 😂 plus it’s working and I love that TGATB is different every day and fun. I miss the GR ready to read days, we would snuggle up on the couch and do school. Loved it! ❤ I never did TGATB LA K or 1. We used 2 and 3 so far and my daughter is great at reading and writing and all the things. No complaints. My son does everything IEW, which I also love. It works for him! I don’t think you can make a decision until you try it out, at least that’s been my experience. I love you channel! ❤

Ok !!! From a mamma who just wrapped up kindergarten with my first child starting from the beginning. My advice would be to finish TGATB level K and the Bob workbook you have already started and add handwriting in. In second semester when he has completed those things start moving beyond the page 5-7. I think it would be a great fit and to be honest sometimes you never know if it works until you try it. I think that is the scary part lol. As far as AAR level 1 I love it for my daughter however if she didn’t have any speech or reading struggles I think I would have still done it because you can skip the fluency drills and move faster in the lesson if your child is getting it quickly. It is thorough and a great reading program but it is teacher intensive but completely doable only 20 mins a day. Also I know alot of people who have used Horizons math as a bridge for Saxon math. It is spiral, colorful, and open and go. I hope you settle on your Kindergarten choices for the year!!! And it is ok if you don’t have it all together either I know the pressure we put on ourselves as content creators too. 🫠

I love this advice! I would definitely second it- I love MBTP for this level and there is so much that you can add in and stretch. I plan to continue it with my 7 year old this year.

I agree with this @Brittanyolga. You can start AAR later in the year and assess what parts of the lessons he’s mastered already and skip the drills. Or if you prefer to keep going with the bob books and workbooks you can always add Jady A elemental phonics (I think she has like three levels or something like that) and the ABC See Hear Do also has several levels he can grow with - I remember you saying he enjoyed that too. As for math we are doing Math with Confidence but I think I remember you saying you didn’t want to go that route. I’ve heard great things about dimensions and it blends nicely into Beast Academy (which I think you should look into a bit further when he’s in 1st - it’s pretty solid and great for advanced kids. Has a digital component which is rock solid and is written in comic style. I think your boy would love it). Good luck!! As for

As of now i plan to use TGTB math and AAR for my incoming kindergartner, however, like you I'm not sure i really want to do TGTB. I did for a few years with my other two and felt the urge to switch last year. I'm so glad we made the switch for them. It was one of our best years. We did Campfire Curriculums and Apologia Math instead. Campfire curriculums has a really neat looking reading curriculum that I've thought about using but loved AAR for my oldest when he was struggling. It did wonders for him so I'm not sure i want you try something new if it worked for my others.

Math with Confidence is another great option for K. Includes lots of games and lessons are only about 20 minutes. We used it specifically to get us through kindergarten then switched to Christian Light Education for Math midyear in our kindergarten. I had ordered CLE Math for her 1st grade year and she wanted to jump right in, so we did. So technically we started 1st grade math during her kindergarten year and worked out beautifully as Math seems to come naturally to my daughter. CLE Math is very similiar to Saxon as it is a spiral approach. CLE is an excellent Math program and also offers LA, Reading, etc for older grades. They even have a Kindergarten program, all open and go worksheets. No fluff but solid program and affordable too. The teachers manuals are very well done. Just throwing out another option for you to look into. We are so blessed to have to many options at our disposal. That too can be a headache 😉

This video is so relatable!! I say go with your gut. It's typically right. Personally I like to keep things more simple on those early years. Less is more kind of thing. If the Bob books are working. Stick with it.

Im in a similar boat as you. My son also has a decenber birthday and he will also be 6 this year and I've found that is the time I see a lot of change with him academically as well. We started AAR 1 this past January (which he has loved) and have been slowing working through Math With Confidence level 1 even though hes technically going into kindergarten this year. I feel like hes would be bored with lower levels. I'm also going to start Sonlight A for science later this year when I feel like he's ready and just take our time with it.

I’ve used AAR and MBTP 5-7 level. Both for my son who is dyslexic. I love a great and in depth reading program but I will say, if your son doesn’t have any reading challenges so far, a program like AAR may not be as needed if that makes sense. We really liked the 5-7 level of MBTP and there’s nothing wrong with spanning it out over k-1st. The topics change so much and they are always doing something different, that it seems like it would fit you and your son’s personalities.

We do two math curriculums a year, this year we have chosen math u see & come January we will pick a second curriculum that helps with any holes we may have. We are using the McGuffey’s & TGATB language arts K as well as Elemental phonics. We had no intention of using TGATB K but my child did the preschool one last year and when she saw the picks for this year she was disappointed her TGATB was not there. Hope you find something that works for you!

Math mammoth isn’t a bad program. I had to switch my daughter from it tho as she was forgetting things. She is doing well with CLE as it’s more spiral. Could try CLE for kindergarten and level 1. For level 2 they learn multiplication at book 206. I like how it introduces topics slow. Then has math drills each lesson.

I have tried both AAR and TGTB phonics and AAR is in my opinion way more solid. For both of my kiddos, AAR and math with confidence plus a handwriting is all i did for K. I didnt feel they needed spelling or anything else. Now my younger sat in on history and science with his older sister but only if he wanted to.

Yeah we are doing dash into learning d’nealian into cursive (Abeka or ZB). Abandoned TGATB and sticking with Abeka and K literature. Spelling you see and ZB Spelling Connections because of Richard Gentry. Math is Singapore Dimensions and supplementing with Beast Academy 1 and Abeka 1. I know we have a lot of similar tastes so I’m curious how it will work out for you

We are doing an eclectic mashup but I really enjoyed Logic of English which I hear is similar to all about reading. However they have an online component with games and teaching there so I can be a little more hands off if I want to. The price tag is killer though on materials. We did all of TGTB K and part of 1. We switched to LOE when it was becoming to much of fighting and tears.

I would skip TGTB if you don’t like it. We’ve switched curriculums a few times for my third for phonics and I think I’ve definitely made it a little harder on her just going back and forth. I’ve learned there’s something to be said for consistency especially with learning to read. We have enjoyed All About Reading but I think if you don’t have a struggling reader, it can feel like a lot to learn every single phonics rule. Overall it is thorough and effective though.
