Gary Pickering designs rolling pods for homeless people. Easy and relatively inexpensive to build, Gary's pictures here show several of his pod prototypes. You can customize yours to your own liking. Build a rolling pod to be your very own -- for you and the things you own. You can do it!

Really? Why don't you start by allowing these lowlifes camp out on your front lawn? Liberal lowlife, why don't you volunteer to go down town and clean up their filth? You are one of the real problems we have in Tucson!

@EIBBOR2654

jocy Martinez I do know the facts and I worked with a volunteer org for a few years to help. But I see that you are one of those that believe in free speech and free thought only if it agrees with you. Another liberal that wants to share everyone else's paycheck through some grand scheme involving the government that will only screw over everyone and do nothing. Again there is plenty of help out there for those that want it. Remember, you can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink it. Most have chosen this way to live, they want everything given to them for free and not have to work for it. They should have the city put them to work to clean up their messes downtown and then start them on the highways and parks. Make them work for the welfare they get so we the tax payers get something back from the money they stole from us! But then again you are just like the rest of the lowlifes that suffer from cranial/annul syndrome, you just talk out your ass. And as for what most of them have been through, most of them are lies or stories from the mentally ill. So don't give me that shit, they got there because of drugs, alcohol, mental problems or they are just plain lazy and they have no self respect. I've heard all the stories, "I quit my job because ...." "I got fired because ..." "Someone screwed me over ...." "It wasn't my fault ...." fill in the blanks. I've yet to hear 1 tell me or the news that it was their fault or their actions that got them in this situation. The ones that are asking for money, especially through government programs to help out these lowlifes, are getting rich from it. Again, some of these street people working the corners with signs, are making good money from the dumb asses that feel sorry for them. It's been on many news programs and a few that really know how to milk that cash cow live in homes! One investigative reporter found that on a good corner they were making over $100 a day, tax free! (And no it wasn't FOX News, it was a local news station) So you are the one that dose not know the facts or are lying about the truth and maybe to yourself. Or are you one of the ones that know how to milk the system and are trying to get more? I've seen section 8 homes given out by the city, I've seen work programs to retrain and get people back up on their feet, program after program. Most trash the homes and or bring in other lowlifes that sell drugs. Then the city is forced to kick them out of the home, then they are back on the street. If you want out of the life you live then get some help that is out there and work your way out. Don't ask me for another hand out, I give to charities that work and pay enough in taxes! Don't try to pass this B/S on me, I've been to Iraq and Afghanistan, I've seen real poverty and hard times, you Bozo's get no sympathy or respect from me.

Love these comments where conservatives show their complete lack of compassion and their pride in their Ayn Randian view of life and society. I wish them their own version of the French Revolution.
@EIBBOR2654
@EIBBOR2654 9 жыл бұрын
Be careful what you ask for Fred, you just might get it. One is coming but you liberals on on the short end of the stick. Most Conservatives do have compassion and give a lot to charities. There are a lot of programs out there to help out these people and a lot of money from taxes, donations and charities go to them. How much more do they want? Most of the people downtown are activists anyway, not homeless. We are tired of getting pushed and taxed for more and more programs that are not working because these people do not want to change. This city continues to take monies away from infrastructure and support for stupid items and programs that we do not need or do not work. You forget it was the liberal democrats that made up the KKK and passed Jim crow laws. It was the conservative republicans that fought and stood up for civil rights. I've seen more racism and hate from liberals than most other groups and they are quick to pin the blame on conservatives and throw the race card at anyone that disagrees with their view. As for Nazi's they were socialist, Nazi stood for National Socialist. It took a war and over 10 million lives to stop them. Is that what you want to happen here?

@billypchajek8439

the local bylaws target any mobile shelter location. they are not allowed on public land. on private land they say they are against building code.. local police used to threaten me for erecting a tent for shelter.
@mudslinger888
@mudslinger888 8 жыл бұрын
+billy pchajek These should always however be allowed on private property, maybe an idea is to start a campaign where homeowners can allow these to park in their backyards IF local laws prohibit camping in public. They ought to make an exception for these since they don't harm the ground like a standard tent does, and everything is contained and ready to drive off, ideally. Ones that require more than a minute of setup are too inconvenient imo, such as a big wind coming and making it a living hell to take down or setup in a hurry, and in homeless camps it can happen.. It will take education, but I do plan to approach my local city council about allowing bike trailer camping since they never have enough shelter space.. I think IF you keep it all in the trailer same as a car camper, it can usually park on private property unless local bylaws prevent it, but these can go in the BACKyard vs the driveway or front yard where they can be targeted..
@TempleOvBlackLight

I was wondering about things like that being a problem. Thinking over it last night and was contemplating what you could do to stealth camp in really isolated areas around towns such as wooded areas, areas without much people etc. Using an idea like Paul Elkins light weight bike camper and being able to move about with it, maybe find a good spot to hide your camper beneath some brush, limbs and such? Not sure what the answer is when oppressive ordinances and laws are in place. For me though, I am sure I could find a spot to park my camper and hide it around some places locally where I live.

I love these little pods! My son is homeless in Seattle. It rains all the time and every time he leaves his camp to go look for work or food, someone always seems to raid his camp and steal all his stuff. This is something he could just about take with him. or hide it some place and lock it up!! He does have a drug problem so I never send money, but this I could send to him! I worry about him out in the weather and at the mercy of others.I hope you are still in business after 3 years!!

What a kind heart. It would be better though if all of them were exactly the same. So if they were lined up in a WalMart parking lot, it wouldn't detract from lovely esthetics. Right? Some of the people here think you're hiding them. Well, I've been homeless (by choice) and there were nights I prayed for a cardboard box. Good luck with your idea. Maybe you could even build 4 or 5 that look the same and that will hook together to make them more stable in bad weather.

Downtown LA and LA County have 70,000 homeless. Imagine 70000 of those huts. These huts are a good thing and a bad thing. It does not fix the real issue, it rewards it. I guarantee, many of the homeless would ruin these huts in a week with squaller conditions, drug use, and other disgusting behaviors. Yes, they provide shelter, but create a new set of issues. A blessing for some!

I see all types of problems with these mini-shelters. The first concern is where to "park" them - legally. Next is security - when empty, they can be moved, stolen and ransacked. Also, they offer almost no cold weather protection. A large percentage of homeless people are either addicts or have a mental disease. Most just want to be left alone and almost none want to work for a living. It's heart-breaking to have a family member in this situation but unless you're the parent of one, you will NEVER know the challenges of trying to help.

Glenn Watkins - Dude, if you're a homeless living under a tarf, wouldn't you be happy to have this roller pad? Who is going to ransack a homeless person and what shit are they going steal...dirty sleeping bag that hasn't been washed for years? And as far parking it, this cart will give them more option where to park it. Whereas, if he only has a tarf, he has find a spot under a tree or bushes to help protect him from the weather.

Real dignity is the ability and the sense of responsibilty to care for oneself properly. Without honest effort that is rightly inteneded that springs from the person themselves, there is nothing anyone can give them that gives them real dignity. Men born without arms learn to fix cars and grow businesses to take of themselves and their families. SImilary, women born without arms become world famous artists, drawing with their feet, etc. They have a God-given humility they retain from birth that the anarchist homelss person discards at a very young age they think of as being their own person. Instead it makes them arrogant, having difficutly with any real authority and mentality unstable. The polititians that pander to them are no different than the recipients of their largesse. Many of the homeless today are drug addicts with government incomes ranging from several hundred into the thousands that spend their money on drugs and resent having to pay for anything else and/or they are too arrogant to live missions and homeless shelters, being unable and unwilling to live by simple rules that in real dignified/civilized people understand are normal. They are the recipients of left wing trickle down and have the same arrogance and inablity that disables them from real dignity or the ability to do anything right. Their left wing leaders and they are one in the same, pretentious malcontents. Both their advocates and they are the government bred new barbarians, with degrees and all the trappings of the stsaus quo, while being nothing more than empty suits. Helping the homeless is hurting them, for the most part. Find an ex-military man that is homeless and generally, with help will use the opportunity to better themselves. The rest are human debri, deserving the ghenna they wallow in.

I love the idea, but I think that finding a place where they can be kept is an issue in many cases, especially for city dwellers. If this project was done on a large scale, I think that most cities with a homeless problem would put a stop to it because it would draw attention to the problem that they ignore or are unable to fix.

Frank Leon-Guerrero Frank, i think that if there could be a template on these type of shelters, they would all be cost effective and more of us could financially contribute, I feel it has its pro & cons, but "the longest journey started with making a first step"

Frank Leon-Guerrero I think the best way to do it would be to have a large, local _"Makerspace"_ give 1 or 2 days a month to this. Have several _"approved"_ templates (like +ray davila suggested) on display for people to chose from and then have them _build their own homes from the bottom up!_ People who can't DIY, can get help from Staff so that they know how it's done and can fix it themselves when stuff breaks (or is vandalized). This also gives the local gubmint the chance to have some choice about standardization. They _must approve,_ but they can choose _which designs_ to approve. This would relieve so much pressure on everyone!!!

join freecycle.org, its free to join and everything is free, a person who is thrifty can build them off of things people offer as well as you can ask for certain kinds of materials and if people have them then you just arrange for pick up. Most political signs of decent construct are made of corrugated plastic sheets nowadays which is something you can use to construct them.

Steve.. My name is Jon Waters .. I was homeless about three years ago in on the streets here in Provo Utah and I noticed you're from Pleasant Grove Utah.. I have watched your videos and similar videos and I'm really interested on getting in touch with mayor Curtis here in Provo to possibly set up a homeless area for individuals since the police asked us to move along and to go to Salt Lake City to stay in the Roadhouse.. I would love to talk to you about this idea.. I hope you can reply to this

gary, how much do they cost to build? the only problem I see here, is the law of the streets says; if you have something I want and I am bigger than you, it's mine, you would have to find a safe place to park them to keep them away from the police and the criminal element, but otherwise, good for you you have a big beautiful heart

Yeah worried the police/ or people would harass the homeless, but hows about a cargo roller that can hold a gas/wood/ethanol/alcohol stove, and place to put stuff, including a hub tent like the Gazelle T3/ Shiftpod Mini/ or ice tent, that could be donated if you ask the right company. I figure if the homeless look like well to do campers, people will leave them alone. Also you could make camper versions to sell to well to do campers, so they could go bike camping, thus paying for donating the same thing to the homeless. I live in a mountain town, with cold weather in winter, and I already gave one homeless friend of mine, a pitch black thermal ice fishing tent, he can camp in the middle of town, and not be seen at night. He just got to get up before the sun comes up, pack, and move. I bought him a stainless steel camp cook set, and he now can maintain a part time job, heating water from anywhere, with a alcohol stove, and doing a old fashioned camping basin wash off. He is saving money now to buy a better tent, with camo netting. He doesn't look homeless, he just likes living at a lower cost of living not needing as much as others.
