Whenever I serviced a gas water heater I would remove and inspect the burner, pilot assembly and flame sensor. Usually found it was worth the effort to clean out dust. I like how you swapped the control on the fly!

The customers water heaters being located in a garage where motor vehicles and flammable liquids are present [gasoline] . Are required by the gas code to be at least 18" off the floor to avoid the possible ignition of gasoline vapors in the event of a spill or leaking tank on a vehicle. The water heater pilot and or the main burner are sources of ignition! There are water heaters made to meet the code for this installation which take air in for combustion at or above the 18" requirement.

Sounds like the gas code is well thought out! 👍

I would love to know what goes bad in them Honeywell controls?😮
@throttlebottle59068 күн бұрын
probably the high limit thermal fuse opened or thermistor in sensor probe( both are in the metal end inside the tank) non-repairable. it may sense the main valve not opening also.

What about the main burner gas pressure? I remember in an other video you said it isn't adjustable, but can it be measured / verified on that gas valve ? I have an AO Smith with the same gas valve, BTW.

In my world, once I play with a old relief valve,it gets replaced, I’d definitely pulled the burner and cleaned it , and soaped out gas pipe , but that’s just me and my opinion

We have a heater install to do at my job. So we are an oil distributor. Everytime some calls for service, I give them this guy's number. So when we need service. He is too busy. My boss just said replace it. Its old and I don't want to worry about it. That was 18 months ago. Every now and then he comes in to get it started again for whatever reason. Still no new heater. The old guy we had I gave his number out and he told me hes not taking new customers so stop. I said I think we can install this puppy. Read the manufacturers manual and do what they recommend. It cant be any worse than what we have haha.

I have the same exact AO Heater, those control valves run way too hot! Set between Low and Hot I’m getting 132 degree water at the furthest faucet! Already warrantied 2 of them and still doing the same🤷🏻♂️.
@throttlebottle59068 күн бұрын
it's possibly from "stacking" effect. that's caused by many short bursts of hot water usage and since they primarily sense and heat from the bottom, they'll cycle on and off frequently, since the hottest water rises to the top it "stacks up", until the lower part of tank reaches set temperature. not using enough water/short bursts doesn't "stir" the tank is also why stacking happens. I run mine pretty hot to start with, usually around 150, if I use a bunch in short bursts(low volume sink faucet/dishwasher/washing machine), it will stack up to slightly over 170F !

@ thanks for the info! Sounds like the only solution is to either get AO Smith to warranty the entire unit or maybe install a mixing valve. Never had this issue with previous water heaters at this location.

Those gas valves were defective from the Mexican factory they came from, I know, I had to change mine out 2 days after the install.They sent me one overnight, I didn't pay a dime for it. They should recall all of those new style gas valves, and should probably manufacture them in the USA.
