Orange cushions. Much easier to see if you fall off or capsize and need floatation. :)

My wife and I sailed an 11 for three days this summer and it was very comfortable and great visibility from both helms for docking and being able to sail trim. ENJOY!!!!

Orange cushions will fade and be hotter in the sun . Go Gray. Dual throttles would be nice if you can stomach the extra $10K euros. As others have said don't do the retractable roof. At minimum it will eventually rot and need replacement and probably will leak anyway in a good rain. Plus as noted steals valuable solar panel space and yes what about solar panels? Did you go for the bigger engines? That's very worth any tradeoffs on other options. BTW I have an FP Lipari 41 great sailing and comfortable at 11-16kt!
@0dysseus42Ай бұрын
I echo everything here. When living on a boat you spend a lot of time hiding from the sun. Convertible roofs are weekend charter features. Always size up the engines, and dual throttles are something you will love to have.
@TideAndTribeАй бұрын
Thanks for your thoughts! We’ve chosen not to do the roof but we’ve spec’d the dual throttles, we decided we’d probably regret it if we didn’t. Nice, the FP 41 is a great boat!

Love the boat mate. Good choice. I really do think you’re going to have to fork out for the second helm unfortunately - you’ll need it. You won’t need the sliding roof though - you’ll only ever have it closed (for shade), it’ll need cleaning, it’ll eventually wear out (which the hard roof won’t) and it’ll rob you of easy spots to put solar panels. By the way, I did laugh a little when you said the Dufour was no good for staying aboard for months at a time, only for long weekends (or something like that). We live on a Moody 336 from the end of April to the end of September every year 😂
@TideAndTribeАй бұрын
Thanks for your thoughts, super helpful! Your Moody is a lovely yacht, the Dufour is the perfect live aboard boat for couple, but when you’re both planning to work remotely, have a dog and want to start a family it starts feeling small 😅

Nice looking boat. I would go grey for the upholstery as it will weather better. Most non performance cats only have a helm on one side albeit usually higher on a flybridge. You really need to look at whether you think you can dock the boat steering from the other side where helm controls exist now. I am thinking that with the low helms you might be seriously sight impaired. Probably too late now but actual owners or owners groups on line are a good way to check. I would not go the folding sun shade. As others have said not only will it wear and possibly leak but it is a loss of potential solar space the importance of which really depends on how you intend to use the boat. Good luck.
@TideAndTribeАй бұрын
Thanks for sharing your thoughts! The double helm stations at the stern is really what sold it for us, it feels very engaging to sail and it’s a lot more social than having a raised helm on a flybridge. Visibility is okay but we’re considering at some cameras to help docking
@antiguareefridersАй бұрын
Beautiful vessel. I’d go for the dual helm controls. If you’re planning to sail exclusively in the tropics and the med then the retractable roof isn’t required as you’ll be grateful for the shade. The orange looks great as long as the cushions don’t get hot or fade in the sun. Perhaps go with light grey but add some funky scatter cushions. Looking forward to following your adventure.

Hope your keeping well. Can't wait to see the rest of your journey, looking forward to it. We'll have to catch up sometime when I'm im Scotland before your on the sea full time haha

Oh I find it funny that people look at buying a cruising boat and only seem to consider the interior comforts and what the cupboards look like. I’ll be more concerned in how it’s made. What sort of resins are used? Will it even sail well? It looks like from the specifications that it has fat hulls and is pretty heavy. so I wouldn’t expect too much in the way of performance but for a comfortable short distance cruiser for hanging out in the med it might be perfect.
@TideAndTribeАй бұрын
We did a lot of research into sailing capabilities before deciding on the Excess. We took it on a sea trial and were blown away with how fast and responsive it was. It’s definitely the best sail boat out of the other options from Bali, Leopard, lagoon etc but yes when you’re living and working aboard, comfort becomes an important factor 😊

Check the KZbin videos from Sail Tahiti taking an Excess 11 from France to Tahiti. She sails a lot better than you would think.
@SOLDOZERАй бұрын
Rustie, you clearly know absolutely zero about the Excess 11. Just sit down and hush.
@peteroleary162Ай бұрын
Fat hulls and pretty heavy is probably exactly what you want if it is your first cat and you are not an experienced sailor. My competitive nature tells me I must have a fast performance cruising cat and while I know I would love those extra knots at times I do have to challenge myself if I was really planning the long expedition cruise would not something a little heavier and more comfortable particularly in heavier weather not be a better option. What it is made out of is important I agree but again how the boat is going to be used is a consideration in this decision. Personally I would like aluminium but aluminium cats are scarce as hens teeth and obviously no tproduction boats.

Sorry - commenting here again half way through your video... ABSOLUTLEY go with twin throttles. After sailing and docking this boat in some VERY tight marinas, we wouldn't consider an outboard helm position without twin throttles... it even has me looking at used boats where sight lines arent good (on a sport top design) and adding a belly box control (i.e. dockmate) or a second throttle. You dont park these boats with the wheel, we locked ours out and did all parking and slow maneuvers with throttle only

No to the retractable roof. If you are working remotely, you need all of the available space for solar. I would never buy a new boat either. Get a 3-5 year old larger boat that has had the kinks worked out and let someone else eat the depreciation.
@TideAndTribeАй бұрын
Thanks for your thoughts, everyone is saying no to the roof! We wanted to buy 2nd hand but the Excess 11 is a relatively new boat, only launched in 2020 so there’s not that many available, and most of them are ex-charter boats so we had to go new :)
@MrSamh90Ай бұрын
@@TideAndTribea 5 year old boat will cost much more in maintenance, our 2 year old boat has cost us virtually nothing other than upgrades we added along the way.

Too many KZbinrs buying new boats. Not very relatable. You’re not buying a boat, you’re buying an apartment to drive all your shit through the third world.

Retractable roof will take away space if you ever mount solar panels.

@lostguru1311Ай бұрын
I wouldn’t go with the retractable roof. You’ll rarely use it and it takes up valuable space for solar etc
@robwilliams6219Ай бұрын
Retractable roof no because like all sailors Solar real estate becomes vital, dual control are good however I survive with single control. I like the excess catamarans it was my close but came in second for me. Wish you all the best and hope to see you out there.

Hello! The algorithm brought me to you as I’m a big cat/excess fan. I’m also looking at doing similar, both to purchasing and sailing round the world with family. Question if you don’t mind (about the part no one talks about..) as I’m also an entrepreneur. Are you buying it privately or are you buying through a business? Paying U.K. VAT? And why brand new versus used? That was a few questions 😅 but have subbed and dropped a follow on IG 💪
@andrewgibbon7955Ай бұрын
Hey! We’re buying the boat privately, ex VAT with delivery in France before export. We will then have temporary admission into Europe and we’ll use the 180 day rule. I’ve actually got another video planned that will run through arguments for buying new vs old and the best process for buying ex VAT which might be helpful! 😊
