My aunt had to give her cat a course of antibiotics once and he was very good about taking every. One day she pulls the couch out from against the wall to vacuum under it and she finds every single one of the pills she gave him deposited under the couch! He'd keep it hidden in his mouth until he had a moment to discreetly chuck it under there.

My cat hated pills. But, if I got the cheese from the fridge, and grated a little, accidentally on purpose dropping ONE cheese sliver on the floor, then pretended to try to beat the cat to it, he gleefully snarfed it up and waited for more. After a short time pretending to grate more cheese, I would drop the pill and try to recover it. He always (obviously!) beat me to it, and snarfed it down. He never even knew he had been fooled. He did usually get another sliver of cheese after. I don't know how well it would work with a cat who didn't always try to steal my cheese sandwiches.

So I've been giving pills to my cats for years. And when I say this I mean I've tried EVERYTHING to get my cats to take their pills. Putting them in food, pill pouches, crushing them into powder and mixing into food and that greasy hairball stuff.... nothing worked. I was lucky if HALF of the medicine went into My cats. This worked. They were NOT happy but the whole pill went in. Now if they don't barf it up on my pillow while I'm at work I'll be ecstatic!!! Thank you !!!!!!!

Been using this method with my cats for years, and it always works like a charm. I use butter with the pills, since it sorta' lubes 'em up and makes them go down a little more smoothly. I'll also usually reward with a treat of some sort as well, just for the extra positive connection with pill times.

Can you do a tutorial on how to get a cat into a carrier when they have to go to the vet
@HelpfulVancouverVet6 жыл бұрын
Yes! It is on my to do list :-).
@roflmeowkittehs6 жыл бұрын
I’ve found that it’s best to find em sleeping, scoop em up and point them head first into the carrier. When they try to wiggle out of your grasp, they’ll wiggle into the carrier and you’re good to go!
@stevefury906 жыл бұрын
That would be great!. Thanks doc.
@FatFrank886 жыл бұрын
When I had my cats I used to find, leave the carriers in the room for a day or 2 before you need them in, gets the cats used to them. Put their toys in, so they can go in and out and play in them. Breeds familiarity and non-threatening. Then at the time I needed them in, I don't force them or push them in, I show them some cheese (their favourite food, put it right in at the back of the carrier, then let them walk in to eat and close door behind them. It worked fine every time. I also think you can buy top loading carriers now which are a bit easier to set them in. With all things cat, I think it's about making the experience non-threatening, quiet and calm as possible so they relate it to a positive/neutral event. Also, first vet visit should just be a check, no procedure again to link the experience in the cat carrier as appositive/neutral one. If every time they get in the car/pet carrier there's a "bad outcome" they will become wise to it
@roflmeowkittehs6 жыл бұрын
If I leave the carriers out for them to familiarize them, they’ll end up peeing in there. Even if I leave a few treats or a bit of nip inside. 😹🤔

Annie Ganeva, I have rarely ever met a cat that wasn't cute. I even enjoy taking in the troubled ones. The are very much like humans who, once given a good home, will turn out well even if they came from a bad home originally, although a few may always be fearful of cuddling or trusting humans too much. One time a cat owner dropped her cat off at my house while she was on vacation with her boyfriend, warning me that the cat was dirty and often peed on the bed. The cat was clean as could be when I got her. Sometimes cats do pee on a bed to try to tell you they are very uoset about something. After all, how else can they express this? Turned out the cat was very jealous of, or scared of her boyfriend, who may have mistreated it behind her back. So watch for those warning signs that such boyfriends will always try to hide from you of course.

Love this channel, glad I found it. My 19 year old Bubba Cat was hard to give a pill, but I used the couch so he wouldn't back up. Sadly he's gone now and I miss him so much! But on a happier note, I've rescued a 3-4 year old girl who is settling in just fine. Cheers, :-)

This video comes years too late for me :-) But at least I now know what I was doing wrong the whole time: Instead of standing behind, I was standing in front of my cat. Also not pointing her head upwards but trying to pry her mouth open from the side. Thank you for this precious lesson. Giving my cat her pill every morning and evening was frustrating for me and for her equally. I would often find pills in corners or on the carpet where she had spat them out unnoticed. I was happy when her medication was changed to a liquid, and she actually loved it. Unfortunately, she died of cancer two and a half months ago, rejoining her two elder playmates in Cat Heaven. But I am sure there will be new cats in my life sooner or later, and when I will have to administer pills again, I will refer to your tips. I also noticed something very important: You have to be as calm and relaxed as possible yourself while giving the pill. Human anxiety, stress and frustration spread to the cat and will make it feel anxious itself.

Mr. Pirate is so so handsome! If you have not already, could you do a video about declawing? I work at an animal shelter and I still get plenty of questions about declawing! It is kind of hard for me to believe that people would still do it, but I realize for many it is from lack of thoughtfulness and education about their feline friends. Your platform would be a great educational tool on the issue.

I'm wondering if you could demonstrate giving eye drops to a cat. I have to give my gentle 8 y/o Archie antibiotics eye drops twice a day. He struggles and I'm not sure if any gets into the eye. Poor baby!
@stakafakt40356 жыл бұрын
amarasharon, that could be more difficult, especially if the eyedrops burn. Some cats prefer salves which can be equally as good. Check with your vet. If you have ever tried salves in you own eyes though you will be aware that these could be partially blinding for awhile so would best be used befire your cat goes to sleep and/or when he won't be roaming outside.
