Best cat I ever had (please bear in mind this was around 30 years ago and we were very much on our own in these things). Had to give medicine. Half an hour later we were both covered in it. In desperation I poured the medicine into a spoon and earnestly told her she had to take it or she would die. Lapped it up like it was milk. Didn't know whether to laugh or cry.

My cat tries to gouge my eyes out the moment I as much as attempt to hold her against her will. Medicating her requires the tactics of Sun Tzu and the patience of a saint. My scars never heal. It's a hell of a conversation starter, though.
@AlphaG33k15 жыл бұрын
Some cats are like that, but most cats will do better if you give them their favorite treat afterward. I never believed that until I tried it for myself and found it works. Some will learn to be great about meds, some just so-so, and some will never cooperate, but what do you have to lose except your scars? ;)

Thanks so much for this video! I have an elderly cat (he's 16) and have to give him a lot of meds right now. It's been stressful! so many vids say to wrap him in a blanket, etc. and that just doesn't work for my boy. This method works so much better! quick, less hurt, less guilt (on my part, for the hurt.) I appreciate your explanations and the sound of your voice which helped to calm me down (somehow a super-peppy vet tech chirping at me about wrapping my cat in a blanket to give him meds made me SOOOO VERY NERVOUS! IMO lots of people don't realize the sound of their voice can have an effect that is less than desirable.) calm, cool, and with knowledge works! thanks again!

I love your videos. You're so calm. I recently had to give my boy cat a 10-day run of liquid antibiotics. Wish I'd seen this before doing that. I did position myself well. Didn't know about the whiskers thing. I'll try that next time one of mine needs meds. I wish they'd just flavor these meds to something that cats would like, such as turkey. One of the meds I had to give my cat once was an antibiotic that can be used for cats, but was made for dogs. It was bubblegum flavor. Bubblegum. For cats. She hated it, of course. This recent one was a bitter antibiotic an animal version of cipro, a medicine I'd taken myself a while back, so I suspected it'd be bitter. I confirmed my guess that it was bitter because the first time I tried to administer it, he shook his head and splattered a drop into my mouth (which was trying to say soothing words at the time). Yuck. It was awful, and he drooled excessively, like the time he bit into a light stick. Fortunately I remembered that light stick incidents are best treated by giving them liquids, preferably oils, and maybe something strong-tasting. The oil helps coat the mouth, and the strong taste neutralizes the bitterness. Or something like that. After calling the vet to be sure it wouldn't interfere with the antibiotic, I decided to use cod liver oil to take his mind off the taste. After filling the syringe, I swished the tip of it around in some cod liver oil before giving him the medicine. As soon as I was done squirting it into his throat, I smeared the oil all over his lips. After that first second of being offended by the medicine, he licked his lips (because they were oily) and enjoyed the taste as he spent a few seconds licking his lips clean. There was absolutely no drooling that time. The cod liver oil completely countered (or completely distracted from?) the bitterness of the medicine. Definitely doing that again, going forward.

I loved the Lancelot "cameo"! I was the resident "pill dispenser" for pets when I was a kid, so I usually am quite adept at getting pills into cats and dogs, but I have never had to give liquids so this is great. I have rabbits now and find them way trickier, but I hope I can adapt these tricks and use for my bunners in case I need to give Critical Care some time. I've had to give Meloxicam at one point, but my bunny at the time loved the taste, so he'd do all the work himself.

Hi Uri! I've recently found your channel and I've binge watched all your videos as they're so great and informative :) I would love you to do a video about end of life care and the choices we have when faced with the reality of losing our pets. It would be great to hear this from a vet's point of view and perhaps you can talk through the options we have and how you come to the decision to to put an animal down. I know it's not the happiest of topics but it's so important for us to do the right thing to ensure we give our pets the good death they deserve - one that is as painless and as stress-free as possible. I think more resources are needed to help pet owners during a time of such sadness. It would also be interesting to know how you deal with that choice when it comes to your own pets? Thank you! :)

Steph Pans Such a good suggestion Steph. I'm going through that now for the 3rd time in the last 20 years (catwise that is). My current kitty is 15 yrs old but last summer suddenly began to age fast, very thin....will only eat half normal amounts...otw she brings it up more often than should be normal. For me, so far, as long as I see her enjoying and sorting out her various kitty routines (even though interspersed with occasional down times, and increasingly reduced in territory and activity) ...if she's pleased to come up for brushings and sit on my hip while i watch tv ...and responds to the goods and bads and curiosities of random(and consistent ) everyday occurrences..then im okay with the attention and work of keeping her happy and stress free here at home. (She's done pretty well this year so far, though wasting away getting thinner and thinner) My last three i did not euthanize, but treated as hospice care, and i was fortunate that they went with me there, still providing familiar comforts. Each one a God given kitty. I'm always concerned about ..(albeit brief and minimalized as best as possible)...about the moments of confusing stress at being taken away from the comforts and familiarity of home. (I'm not sure?..but i think there might be vets out there able to provide at home euthanasia for that time)

Wonderful. I’ll try this. I have one cat who will put up with it. My other cat is a 20 lb British shorthair rescuer. She has two slipped discs and a profound distrust of people. She has an incredibly strong “bunny kick”, accurate right hook, and no shame about using her teeth. I have scars. She becomes a kitty burrito, wrapped in a strong towel , held in place by a second person. Then I can do the lifting and opening you describe. I would love to know what she went through to make her so afraid. Never-the-less she is my cat and will live out her lifespan and medical treatment to the end of her natural life with me.
