It seems crazy to me that people with horses who wont stand still to be mounted, who spook at basic things at the walk and are not relaxed doing even basic things, are then expecting the horse to do advanced things such as eventing. Its like your kid fails first grade so you expect him to pass high school science test

I am deeply grateful for the sharing because despite me knowing all this, seeing the horse change helps me consider our own issues.... Buddhism! Mindfulness under saddle. Liberation for both horse and rider by learning to become empathetic and listen to your horse. The horse then learns you are trustworthy. May this principle follow us from the arena back into our lives. Brilliant video. I hope it shines far and wide. Thanks for that Warwick. I worked out with my mare that when she is scared by something, if I shorten or tighten the reins she then feels trapped. She feels she can't get away because the reins and my legs won't let her if she feels she might need to flee. Relax the reins, let her look, and she's about 85% better. Now there is less looking, and less worry. You're right, letting them look without pressure, letting them have some control over the situation without us demanding the control, works.

I can't imagine eventing with a horse that hasn't a forward temperament. Her body is ideal for the task, but if she hasn't the mind for it, what a labour of Hercules to put her to that work. Respect for the patience in your techniques.
@harrymills27703 жыл бұрын
Maybe it's just horse temperament, with some unconscious errors by trainers along the way. The girl and the horse clearly have a strong connection, but the girl needs some Warwick training on horse psychology. But you're the one who knows the term "forward temperament," which I don't.
@cobaltcanarycherry3 жыл бұрын
@@harrymills2770 It only means that the horse is enthusiastic or agreeable to work, as opposed to a more recalcitrant horse, or one as in the old thinking "had to be beaten over fences", one that refuses, balks, tosses riders to avoid it. Clearly, I don't think horses should be beaten, and there's a continuum of willingness to unwillingness to perform.
@introvertedequinesamsara65933 жыл бұрын
@@cobaltcanarycherry not really all horses are inherently lazy that's why lunging and round pinning works, because the horse is looking to stop. A forward horse is alot of things and you can get a "lazy" horse to be forward with training and conditioning. A forward horse you want to relax and a lazy horse you want to be more energetic, it's about evening out your horse so it's energetic when you want and chill when you want.
@cobaltcanarycherry3 жыл бұрын
@@introvertedequinesamsara6593 All horses are wired to conserve energy when they can. It's just smart. I do understand that performance is a matter of training, but I would ten thousand times rather have a born goer than be forever trying to instill it. Different people go for different types of horses, it makes the world go 'round.
@introvertedequinesamsara65933 жыл бұрын
@@cobaltcanarycherry every horse is born curious and energetic it's only during later years that they might develop different levels of fitness and drive that might cause them to be more forward moving. Lots of things can influence a forward horse not just their personality but from age, training, health, how well they're feeling, breed traits, how confident they are, etc. People often get forwardness mixed up with anxiousness as their horse practly dives into things and wants to go go go.

These are my favorite videos -- where the owner or trainer is just not listening to the horse and then when they do, the horse feels safe enough to relax. I always wonder whether the owner/trainer incorporates what Warwick showed them into their normal routine, of it they just end up going back to their old ways. Looking forward to next installment and hopefully finding out where the horse goes from there. Does she stay in eventing, with better performance and behavior, or maybe a different discipline?
@brandimakauskas17094 жыл бұрын
This was a joy to watch as the horse and rider progressed into relaxation and comfort. Mr. Schiller, have you ever explored the relationship between pain and behavioral 'problems?' As and equine body-worker, I've found that a lot of so-called behaviorally challenged horses are actually reacting to pain. A study was recently published examining the abilities of owners to evaluate the lameness/pain of their mounts and something like 50% of the horses submitted for the study that were 'sound' were actually found to be lame.
@tracyjohnson50234 жыл бұрын
YES! I've found the same thing to be true as far as horses being in pain, especially with horses that have never had any under saddle behavioral issues suddenly start. As you know, many horses will work in pain until they just can't. The subtle signs leading up, sometimes for months, are there it's just most riders haven't been educated on what to look for. Most in the equine community also seek out body work pros such as massage, chiropractors, acupuncturists, etc. ONLY when there are problems, instead of as preventative care. I rehab all breeds, both on ground and under saddle, including many rescues. I always do a full evaluation, as I've been trained, to rule out pain as a cause before I start work with the horse. There are lots of good videos and courses out there for horse owners to learn to do basic preventative massage and stretching and how to do basic eval before calling a professional. Thank you for bringing this issue up.

Probably not just training horses, either. When it comes to people, I always thought of it as getting on the right side of somebody or knowing how to put something to somebody. You can't make people or critters do what you want them to, but you can present things in such a way that what you want is what they want.

One thing I noticed about alot of competitive riders is some of them tend to make every ride a competitive training or workout. I think it's important to have those times with the horse when it's just some ground work and brushing or a casual relaxed ride with alit of relaxed rein walking like he is doing. Some of these horses come to dread rides because it's always jumping or running or working patterns etc.

"Fixing a Rearing Eventing Mare" is a great example of were this journey has taken us all: from "fixing" and desensitizing horses to simply listening and using empathy to let the horse "fix" itself. We can give the horse back it's confidence and selfcontrol and hopefully gain the trust of the horse in the proces. I teach riding lessons for small children. This is only possible if I can connect with the ponies in the riding classes and gain their trust and cooperation. Warwicks videos have moved mountains for me with some of those ponies! It is such a joy passing on this wonderful approach and philosophy to the kids. #journeyon20

I finally got to watch this one- fantastic video as usual Warwick, filled with insights and examples. How I wish I had a time machine to go back and work with my former horses who had anxiety issues... I thought I was helping them get braver by making them face their fears, but now I understand that I was really just telling them that I didn’t want to hear what they needed to tell me. Really fascinating- I have used some of your principles on a few of the school horses I’m now riding (I still haven’t returned to the world of horse ownership, just riding weekly). I’ve tried to get the instructors at the barn to watch your videos, but they are firmly in their world of traditional hunt seat arena riding...so I sneak things into my rides 🤫

This video has been so helpful to me in the last few weeks! I have been struggling with the exact same thing, and have been taking a different path regardless of what my friends and even past eventing coaches believe is right. I knew my horse's issues stemmed from anxiety as it manifests in many different situations. In each case it seems to be a result of fear of being away from the herd, and getting "tough" does not help the situation nor does it set us up for more success in the future! Timing of this video could not be more perfect. I have taken my training WAY back to the basics and am looking for ways to help him find success and comfort with me rather than being a source of stress.

Agree, and these people blame the horse for overbending when they have constant contact never releasing, and also act suprised when the constant pulling in the mouth and kicking forward results in the horse rearing upwards

Too many people riding dressage are taught by people who don't understand the basics.. contact come from the horse not the rider. If the horse is unhappy.. it's not being ridden or trained correctly..

I really liked this one though about allowing the horse to gain confidence and learn, without having to direct the and war with them. It's as easy as sitting there 💜 so many breakthroughs happen when you work with them rather than against . #journeyon20

Hmm the first time you rode her and she chose to rest, I don’t know if you noticed but she did some weird head side to side weird head rotation? I’m wondering if there is more happening in her head like a headache or some neurological issues. Maybe this is why she seems disgruntled with jumping. Could possibly be affecting the way she sees things or maybe she is chronic to headaches?

I love this vid, I love your work and everything youve pointed out. I also feel, with alot of these horses with 'problems', once we build thier confidence up a little, and show them we are listening to them - show them that we are present (bringing that ear back to us), the horse is so much more relaxed. Kind of like their 'problematic' behaviour is them just trying to communicate with us - which can be quite escalated if we're not reading them. Beautiful work here Warwick, and thank you sharing your knowledge and work with us.

I had a horse spook at the end door of the arena. I chose to work hard in my Dressage routine... Piaffe, passage, extended trot etc. Very active hard work. When we rest, we go by that door. Pretty soon the problem door started to seem more appealing. Making the horse go with a whip or spur towards the spooky thing only makes it worse; the spookiness comes with pain which only reinforces that there is trouble “over there”. Just what your very wise video allows me to confirm. Thank you 😊

Mr Schiller...Have you found a correlation with distressed horses more so in one particular discipline compared to others? For example: English Dressage vs Western? My point being; In a discipline that requires more control and conformity, do you find more "problem horses?" I'm sure this could lead to quite the discussion, but I hypothesize yes. Your input is greatly valued along with your insightful videos. Horse psychology!
@allie32474 жыл бұрын
I absolutely agree with this. The way a lot of English riders have to ride for their disciplines requires a lot of neck rounding, and almost stiff movements. If you compare it to a discipline such as western pleasure for example or even reining, where they are fully free and relaxed in the face/neck
@jmad23284 жыл бұрын
@@allie3247 Just to clarify...Im not degrading English riding. I learned English when I first started riding horses (great fundamentals in balance). I prefer Western riding...working cows and riding in rough, open country. I respect all disciplines. I just think the more we control horses the more likely they are to "lash out." Children are very similar. Horse first!
@Jazzy-kk4sk4 жыл бұрын
@@allie3247 If the neck is round and the movement stiff, the rider has rushed the process of connection which I don't think is very representative of the disciplines. I do see your point though, and I do think that in the lower levels of dressage people try to rush the process and end up with hyperflexion. On the other side, harsh bits seem to be extremely common in western disciplines (such as a tom thumb) which teaches evasion, not true softness (in my opinion), which can then result in stress for the horse and sour behaviour. Just thought I'd share my side, I'm not saying 1 is better than the other, as that is most definitely not the case! :)

I agree but I'm criticising because majority of equestrians still use medieval techniques and treat horses like machines that they want to completely control instead of living beings you're trying to work with, we know positive reinforcement is the way to go and with horses that's relieving pressure mainly yet so many people still just use pain and constant pressure to try and force the horse to do what they want

20:30 she keeps nagging with the spur, hard to catch, but she keeps pushing the horse to move. 20:40, the horse thinks about resting, and she tells it nope... See how the horse sort of "stumble" it was thinking of stopping, which is why Warrick comes up to them.. She doesn't let the horse decide, she keeps pushing.. Even though she isn't steering it.
@ann-marieparrey65104 жыл бұрын
she was listening to Warwick so maybe her auto pilot kicked in, I'm guessing that's how she is used to riding. It takes a while to learn those new approaches :)
@pamrogers59794 жыл бұрын
Yes I thought this too. But is she following what she thinks warwick wants her to do (what she 'has' to do (to 'win'/to do the 'right' thing/follow the 'rules'/whatever the situation is/or a rider is just controlling :( ) and that is magnified by the horse saying I can't live with this lack of connection. You aren't with me. This is a 2 way relationship. I'm not a machine, we're a team. (This sort of pattern?)
@iimdone4 жыл бұрын
i see, another assumption comment from you. first off, she wasn't nagging with the spur, this is something dressage riders will LIGHTLY do to encourage the horse to stay in a rhythm and keep walking. secondly, no, the horse just stumbled a bit. it's the same thing as slightly catching the ground with the tip of your foot; she is a lazy mare after all. stop interpreting things negatively when they are so clearly fine.
@Newcards4u4 жыл бұрын
@@iimdone He told her to just sit there, "encouraging" with the spur, prevented the horse from doing what Warrick is all about. I don't think you understand how he works, or you are just ignorant to the fact, that the way this horse was being used/ trained /ridden, is the problem in the first place. This horse has developed a lazy attitude, from neglect to be heard, rider keeps pushing, keeps telling the horse that I don't care what you think, or feel, you are just supposed to do what I want from you. And smart horses, stop trying, stop wanting to please. Start retaliating, and stupid people blame the horse for it.. If you can see that your at fault, that your mentality is at fault, only then can you be open to learning, to understand on a deeper level. Now I'm done...

One big change that I see honestly is how loose you carry the reins as opposed to how tight the 'trainer' you educated had them. I'm pretty sure the tight reins was making the horse uncomfortable, maybe even in pain. So when you rode her with loose reins she felt way more relaxed. Maybe this horse would ride even better in a halter, rather than a bit.

I was surprised to hear Warwick say a couple times that, it wasn’t that the horse reared and bolted from the jumps because she was scared, instead, it was because she was “lazy”. This didn’t seem to be a fair judgment, and she really didn’t look lazy to me. Once she was given the ability to have some control, she seemed quite energetic. She might have been better described as “unmotivated”.
@WarwickSchiller2 жыл бұрын
It’s just another way of saying the same thing. Saying she’s lazy really makes people stop and think differently
@WarwickSchiller2 жыл бұрын
Saying she’s unmotivated is not really true. She’s highly motivated to get to a place of rest (and peace). Rearing, which is really hard work , requires her to be highly motivated to find that place of rest

@@WarwickSchiller What I should have said is "unmotivated to do what the rider is asking". But, "lazy" is such a negative term that people use for horses, with the implication that they won't put effort into doing anything.

So I’m sure there are people out there who will disagree with this but all of the Oldenburg’s I’ve known are obnoxious under saddle. They’re big and athletic and they know it. One used to eject professional riders regularly. He was a $60,000 horse who ended up becoming a pasture pet because he was on rideable by anyone.He’d be going along just fine and then out of nowhere boom he would let it rip.I think he learned how to pitch people at a young age and became his go to behavior. Having said that though I blame whoever was training these horses at a young age. Again, when you’re focused on just jumping and bragging about how high your horse is jumping in their first year of showing you have almost certainly not spent time on developing good flat work skills

It’s really Decreased her spooking to the point of it being a rarity now. I think she needed exposure to new things but also needed to know that she wasn’t going to be forced. @@sarahporter7789 Agreed. I’ve actually known four Oldenburg‘s the fourth one was a high-level jumper with good training and his owner trainer used to say he could be a little tricky to ride. Not a horse for everyone. I think with certain breeds when horses are bred just to jump big fences or just to have a certain color or just to do well in the halter classes that other desirable traits, like good temperament start to get lost. I also think a lot of trainers and owners purchase these big jumpers for the jumping ability and ignore the fact that there are huge gaps in their early training.

So many eventers and jumpers, will smack the horse, even when it is running smoothly towards the jump, like a preventative measure I guess.. It's just the mindset of people that destroy horses..

I am not an eventer, and I don't have the toughness to be one either, because I am not capable to sacrifice another being, for fame or fun, or whatever is driving those who choose to be so. Would I jump a fence, a ditch or something like that for fun, yes, but I wouldn't push my horse to do anything, that I would need a whip to make it do.. A horse will very rarely jump things in the wild, why? Because of the chance of getting hurt. Getting hurt, means death... They don't have our vision, they are pretty much jumping an obstacle they can't judge themselves. They can't measure distance like we do, they can't really see the jump, but they trust us, to make sure they are safe... And more people don't take the time to train them to get comfortable with the hoof, eye combination, to judge the distance correctly, on their own. And people don't take the time to understand the horse, to read up on how their vision works, they just keep blaming the horse for being difficult.

@@Newcards4u if youre not an eventer, then you cannot claim they do this for fame nor can you throw bash claims out and use them as "facts". a lot of horses find eventing as fun as the riders do, believe it or not. the whip smack doesn't hurt, it's just a tap that goes "hey, pay attention! you can do this!" it's like a sports teammate giving you a firm pat on the shoulder before the next round to encourage you and show support. as you can see, warwick uses whips too lmao. also, you absolutely cannot bring wild horses into this as, oh guess what, theyre WILD, not domesticated. of course horses can jump in the wild, they just don't go around jumping everything they see because they have no reason to unless running from danger etc. obviously horses don't have our vision, but they can still tell where the jump is and, like you said, put trust in the rider to set them up correctly. most people DO pay attention to distances and try their best to judge it correctly. just because some make mistakes, doesn't mean they don't care. regardless, 90% of people DO NOT blame the horse. not sure where you're getting these accusations from.

The rider is putting too much on the horse. Yes back to basics, ride that horse forward, and stay off her face... Riders hands are far from independent to her seat. People attitude, not making the job fun.

Not all people have a will to get up out of bed but they still do it because it's good for em. This is not an "I don't want to event" horse, it's way more complex than that as this horse not wanting to go over a jump is the least problem it has. I'm glad she tried to event on em and found her way to Warwickschiller to both help her advance as a rider and for her horse to learn the world isn't a scary place.

Wonderful to see the difference when you rode her to when the girl was riding her. No way did she want her on her back.

Not really, she's an insecure horse who spooks easily and after fixing the spooking and other things she jumps without complaints. It's like saying a kid hates books but ignoring the fact they can barely read, how do you expect the kid to enjoy something when they're frustrated and don't know how.

I wish eventing and extreme riding would become illegal. Horses would serve us their hearts on a silver platter...and then we eat their hearts! 😢 Why would we force our furry friends to do such extreme and horrible things they don't want to do? Can someone explain to me why we force and spook and push our horses through this horridness ?

Are you saying the horse is being deceptive and spooking to avoid work I think you missed the point completely and that's a very human thought horses don't think like that, your anthromophising

@@sarahporter7789 no not at all, my girl doesnt spook. She just throws a bit of a fit when asked to leave the barn or gate. People done give horses (and animals in general) enough credit!
