Yes it is! It also takes time to mentally adjust to not keeping something. I go through my closet every year or two and throw out things I told myself I’d ALWAYS want to keep. I just purged some sentimental things this week actually - it felt kind of nice to not be as attached to them anymore and recognize the need for more space/peace in my life than the memories I kind of have with those clothes. Also, the pictures and memories are there, but I don’t have the urge to keep everything as much anymore. Once you haven’t seen it in years, it’s easy to understand how little use you have for it, and then it’s very freeing to let go.

Coming from an Asian working class immigrant family, I experienced firsthand how hard it is to get rid of things. It's one of many reasons I moved out: I can manage my stuff, but I can't handle being surrounded by everyone else's clutter. I'm the sentimental type and tend to hold onto things, but I go through my closet twice a year. It's much harder since moving out, and living in Canada with 4 extremely different seasons, it's easy to accumulate things. It was hard to let go of some high school clothes, so many memories and I considered making a t-shirt collage, but knew I would probably never get around to do said project. I managed to let go, as I had pictures wearing them ☺ I had a wonderful first experience with ThredUp, but I've read negative testimonials of how they prioritize profits over quality and mistreat their employees in recent years. I'm reconsidering to shop in the future. 😐

I love the acknowledgement that it's hard for a lot of people. As a sentimental person, but also someone who tries to do minimalist... it's a struggle... But I try and have a one in one out policy most of the time... But my partner is definitely a bit more of a clothes hoarder. His shirts take up more than half of the hanger space in our closet haha!

Molly I am disabled so I have someone coming over to help me clean out my closet and dresser drawers this weekend, I tend to do major cleaning out of closet in spring and fall, I clean out other areas of my place summer and winter. This video is definitely motivation to get rid of things that I haven't worn .

So lucky as I am currently being grilled to accept clothes back I haven’t wore in a few years. But I come from a working Asian family that immigrated into the US with very little so it’s so hard to argue to not keep it. She literally threw a “ Don’t waste my money” quote at me.

De cluttering is always rewarding, not only that but to be able to fit stuff without overflowing is also rewarding haha! I declutter every time I switch my wardrobe around. (Truth be told it was very very hard to do so but I have learned how to! Yet the person I learned from has even way more clothes then I ever did!! 😂😂😂)

I love this! Over the past year and a half, 2 years, I've been slowly going through our house and getting rid of so much stuff. I'm about to move from an urban city environment to a totally rural isolated farm lifestyle. I was in very similar shoes as your friend: Hoarding clothes, never getting rid of anything except for when I absolutely couldn't squeeze myself into it anymore or if it was pretty much ripped in half, having washed out clothes from high school and honestly also way before. I did a big closet clean out earlier this year where I got rid of eight full garbage bags, which is a small miracle because it used to be that every single item would give me sleepless nights and I didn't have a Molly to help me. I still technically haven't finished the declutter and still have a couple of boxes to get through and my other clothes out in a pile, so maybe this can give me that final push of motivation. Having clothes that genuinely feel good on my body and make me feel happy about how I look is going to be such a game changer in the future.

Thanks for helping your friend and that her for sharing this with us. I totally need a kick in the butt, I’m a big emotional keeper. I have clothes from the late 90’s, vhs collection, and live in pathways. Organized, ordered, and open spaces where I live bring extreme anxiety. So I live with cozy apartments with literal emotional baggage. Wish I could save this video on my Home Screen so I can keep on going refer to it. I do have an “Molly inspection” play list. 😃

I have one bit of advice with this video I'm also a pale skinned girl. My one bit of advice is be careful with pale colours such as the pale pink jumpsuit because same as with me it just becomes part of your skin colour. I would mostly suggest darker shades or blue.

As much as I’d love to declutter, it feels so wasteful. I try to donate items but the reality is that a lot of things end up in the landfill. And it’s just the worst when you get rid of something and then need it later. I try to shop at thrift stores but it simply not convenient when it comes to needing very specific items. And if it’s not wasteful, it’s expensive to buy roller blades multiple times. Like, I’ll just hold onto them. Do I use them often? No! Will I use them again one day? Ummm yes. Absolutely. So I will hold onto the ones I have.

Since moving to LA from the UK, my mum has been sending me my stuff from my attic room/warehouse at my parents/my childhood house. Some useful, a lot random. A tip from my favorite decluttering expert is to go in with a trash bag and a cardboard donate box and just grab visible obvious trash and donations for as long as you have time and emotional energy. Even if you just grab two items of trash, you made progress!
