The plugs your referenced as freeze (out) plugs are also called soft plugs and both nomenclatures are applicable. If you didn't get the smaller plug seated all the way just use a pry bar with a piece of lathe between the bar and the head to send it home. This tip is applicable to all engines, not just Porsche. Apply a 1 mm bead of sealant on the oil side of the periphery only and none on the cam tower mating surfaces. The bolts only need sealant on the ones where oil can migrate up the bolt shank to the bolt head and leak. You guys probably figured out the 2nd scavenge pump you installed has a vacuum pump assembly for the power brakes. Hope my comments will help and they are always meant in a positive way.

I don’t have firsthand experience with 996 vacuum pumps. The base looks different than a 9A1, but the top section cover with eccentric and slid-bar appears to be the same. I have had two 9A1 vacuum pumps self-destruct on track. The first caused a fire that totaled my 987.2. After the second one failed, no fire; thankfully, it's the first thing I replace on any flat-six engine before tracking it. I've been told the top cover is aligned precisely with the eccentric slide bar, and it's not possible to reassemble it with precision if disassembled; not sure if that's rumor or fact. The 9A1 pump is available from Pierburg, the OE vendor for the part. Again, I'm not sure about the 996. If it were mine, I’d replace it for peace of mind because you get about two to three brake applications if it fails (no fun at 120mph) before you lose power brakes, and it causes significant carnage in the engine bay if it goes. I did a lot of research at the time when my second one failed, and I think it's because of the wear of the shaft spinning the eccentric, which causes a vibration and causes the screws that hold the cover to back out. If you re-use the pump I'd go with the red Loctite :) BTW, I love the series; it's very useful to the DIY Porsche community.

Just sealed my deep sump pan with that Reinzosil this weekend, I'll let you know how it holds up 😁Loctite SI5900 is awful to work with, and I find when you order it, it's often already expired...

This freeze/molding hole plugs can distort, better to push them from the outer edges..like oil seals or sealed roller bearings..

Sorry, I missed that 🫣 … with the way product technology moves on, I might try contacting Loctite/Henkel & see if they can recommend a product that will do both crankcases & cam covers 🤞

Hi Aaron! Do you have the part number for the freeze plug? Thanks

+@peters1821 I think we showed a part number for one in a previous video, or talked about the size at least. Some weren’t Porsche parts.
