Helsdon Hammock setup in rain

Helsdon Hammock setup in the rain. It's very fast and very easy to set up and you and your gear are protected from getting wet, both from rain and from condensation.
Anybody, without any experience from pinching a tent or hanging a hammock, can set up the Helsdon Hammock in less than two minutes.

20 odd years ago I set up a tent in a very heavy rain storm and got absolutely soaked. It made a lasting impression. Since then I have bought a family tent that is a pop-up with external skeleton that goes up super quick, then you run inside. Now I just use my Helsdon but I have found if you set it up when it is really hammering down either throw a tarp over the top to cover you getting in and out or wait for a break in the rain. It is so fast to set up I think it would have to be a major bucketing to get you soaked climbing in. I have set up, thrown my pack in the foot end and climbed in wearing my boots and rain gear, then undressed inside and tossed the wet stuff into a plastic bin liner and put that at the head end. Then dry off me and the interior and get dressed into dry gear. Super cosy in five to ten minutes.

Thanks for showing this! Setting up camp in the rain is definitely a realistic scenario at times. I’m glad to see how well the hammock holds up in these conditions.

You are welcome, and thanks for asking me to make this video in the first place. It is really fast to set up, but it is equally important that it is so easy. Anybody can do it without any prior experience and apart from hanging it too low, there really is no way of doing it wrong.

Brilliant design, you've thought of everything, huh? :D I wish you got more attention, it truly is deserved IMHO. Came to this video from a comment where a guy complained about just what i had in mind "a separate tarp would be faster to deploy and protect you from the rain while you set up the hammock itself", but it turns out this is even faster hahaha. I've heard people keep their pack in the backpack's rain cover on the ground so it should be fine in the mesh as well. The only problem i can see with this is cooking, where a separate tarp would still have the edge, but I might add a couple of grommets on the outter fly to use it for that. Absolutely killed it, this should appeal to both ground and hammock campers. I wish you got your deserved recognition and fame, cuz this is better than the haven. Even more so, i wish I could afford it 😂 (it's not expensive, it's just Portugal is as wealthy as eastern Europe...)

Thank you. It is very fast and very easy to set up and it gives you and all your gear excellent protection from all kinds of weather. It is true that it does not give you cover to cook in the rain. We try to be the best solution when it comes to sleeping comfort, ease of use, weather protection and durability, but we can't be best at everything. With no separate tarp, you can't set it up in porch mode. But there is nothing to stop you from bringing an extra tarp to use for cooking in the rain. That extra tarp can be pretty small and light, since it doesn't need to protect you during the night. We hope to gain some fame over time, but we don't want to mass market our product just to sell more. We want every hammock we sell to be used over and over again, year after year. A Helsdon Hammock that we sell that is only used once or twice is a wasted hammock that leaves too big a CO2 footprint. We would rather sell one hammock to little than one hammock too much. Our European retailers have been out of stock for some time now, but I just sent a bunch of new hammocks to one of our European retailers. Will you be bringing out any different colours,would like to see it in different styles of camouflage.

We will make it in different colors. The current color is spring green, which is very similar to oak leaves in the spring or blueberry bushes. We will make it in one or two darker shades of green that blends in better with summer and fall leaves and pine or fir trees. We might also do a shade that is more of an olive green. The demand for camouflage patterns is not that high, so currently we have no plans for multi colored versions.

@@HelsdonOutdoors2 olive green or 'coyote' brown for my money. The trouble with camouflage is it can stand out like the proverbial canine genitalia if it is wrong. Anything other than the current Hi-Viz pastel green. If they sell the outer flys separately I'll happily but one instead of a whole new hammock.
