Helsinki Finland Tour - Cathedrals & South Harbour
Our first few days in Helsinki
We finally get to see the city of Helsinki in Finland after waiting for 6 months in Estonia due to the global pandemic.
After all the waiting we hopped on a tram and made our way to the centre of Helsinki and began exploring by visiting the Uzpensky Cathedral and the market square and marina area. Then we began heading to see the Helsinki Cathedral when it rained! A lot, meaning we diverted and ran inside a cute coffee shop to hide. There, we decided to continue our exploring the following day instead, what’s another day when we’ve already waited six months! Luckily on the second day the weather was a little kinder to us and we finally got to check out the awesome Helsinki Cathedral.
Upcoming videos!
Join us next time as we explore more of what Helsinki has to offer including The beautiful Esplanade Park, the ultra modern kansalaistori square and The Sibelius monument as well as checking out the cool and quirky Design District.
If you can’t wait that long head over to our instagram tideknottravellers for daily updates on what we’re currently up to and what’s coming up in our future videos!

We saved money and travel points, quit our jobs, rented our house out and boarded a one way flight. We started this KZbin channel to share our experiences with friends, family and anyone who plans to travel to the places we’re visiting. We leave TKT tips/facts on our vlogs and blogs to give information that we wish we’d had before visiting. We hope you find our content useful :)

We've always wanted to go to Helsinki 😄 That solar bench was SO cool! It's good to know that it's a bit expensive there, so we can be prepared for that 😅 wait, what is a flying cinema!? Sounds very cool! Sorry about the weather, but at least you had better weather the next day 😉 that drone footage of Helsinki Cathedral 🤯 great video guys!

Fun to see you in Helsinki! Good call on the supermarket sandwich to save some money, I've heard Finland if rather expensive, but looks like a destination worth visiting. That Orthodox church is beautiful! Really love the architecture. I didn't realize such large cruise ships came into this part of the world but South Harbor looks super nice. Would happily spend the whole day there swimming and relaxing :)

Looks lovely. The red cathedral’s great but Helsinki Cathedral even more spectacular, as you say, plus beautifully upkept & Your drone footage was SO good, gave us all the best ‘view in the house’! Good timing with that - wise move with sudden weather change! Love the pool complex - super temperature & it’s situation by the water - Great spot for lunch too! Thanks - Look forward to seeing more...👍

Some new buildings are beautiful as well. Like the new main library just behind the main railway station, passing it by west. There's one block between which has a hotel, think it's Holiday Inn , behind that is the park where's that library. You can't get lost, cause you'll see either the rail way station or the tracks when going there. You can't quite walk next to the tracks, but keep them in the corner of your eye, except when passing that block with the hotel.

I can see that Kirsty has a real issue with the prices in Helsinki - she keeps bringing up the subject : ) But I guess when you have spent nearly half a year in Estonia ang got used to living costs there Finland really must feel steep. By the way, when you went from Latvia to Estonia, which is itself pricier, did you feel the difference?

Hi! HSL is a transport authority rather than a company per se. They grant sets of routes to various private transport companies (Transdev, Nobina etc.) via tendering. HSL operates in a dozen of municipalities within the greater Helsinki region. Other major cities and regions have their own agencies/ authorities
@TideKnotTravellers

Ahh guess they're similar to TFL in London, except HSL are more advanced with an app for purchasing tickets and route planning.

Glad to see the weather on day 2 turned out to be better than day 1. It looked so windy! That was the first solar bench I've seen, which seems like a really cool idea. Nice video. FYI, Almost all the areas you filmed are parts of a no-drone zone. There are several security-sensitive government buildings in the vicinity of the Market Square and Senate Square, so there is a permanent no-fly zone. It extends 6 or 7 blocks north and east from the Market Square, and also applies to drones. There are signs, also in English, but it is easy to miss those. Usually one does not pay much attention to signs, when there are so many neo-classical buildings to look at...

At 15:05 you Can see the marks of the 1944 Helsinki bombings on the statue. Traces of the war(s) can be seen in several statues and buildings in Helsinki. The city didn’t want to fix them, they wanted to leave them as memorials.

Whoohoo, country number 5 guys, so awesome to see you guys in a new country 😀 The tram looked so awesome, wow didn't know transport was super expensive there. Helsinki looks so awesome guys, love the pools by the harbour, never seen anything like it. That market looked really cute especially the netting at the top, those seagulls can be crazy (they terrible here in South Africa 🤣) What a pitty about the weather, but always good to warm up with a cuppa. Helsinki cathedral looks so beautiful, wow! Were you guys not scared leaving your camera there while you walked up those stairs 😅 Love how much you guys already did, looking forward to seeing more of beautiful Finland. The outtakes 🤣 great timing of the drone, i swear when we say lets take the drone up, either the wind comes up or seaguils or something 😅

When were you in Helsinki? It surely wasn't in January :-) Someone fed you BTW total BS, i.e. it is not the government building you are pointing to - that one is on the left side of the Lutheran Cathedral at the Senate Square. The building you are talkning about is the one used by the estates, i.e. the parliament before the democratic parliament. You really should have gone into that building - it is incredibly beautiful after a renovation in the late 90s.

As an Olympics head, we've gotta check out the Olympic sites there, too. Better weather forecast for the win! That’s so interesting that you picked up on the greeny colour in the rooftops of the two cathedrals.
