*Helvellyn Hike via Striding Edge & Swirral Edge: A Day to Remember*
Starting from Glenridding, we parked up by the side of Ullswater Streamers, a perfect starting point for what would be a memorable adventure. The initial climb up to Birkhouse Moor was steep but rewarding, though the swarms of flying ants made the flatter sections less comfortable. Soon, we reached the famous *Hole-in-the-Wall*, a natural marker that signaled the start of the real excitement.
Striding Edge was our first challenge: a narrow, rocky ridge with sharp drops on both sides. The ascent here was thrilling but required focus, as the exposure and jagged rocks made every step count. It was a true scramble, with a 7-8 meter climb down near the end that led us to a loose gravel path. From there, it was a final push to the summit of Helvellyn.
Reaching the top, the sense of accomplishment was immense. The three of us took in the stunning panoramic views and visited the summit memorial before heading over to the trig point, marking our triumph.
Next came the descent via *Swirral Edge*. Though not as daunting as Striding Edge, it was still steep, rocky, and required concentration. With Red Tarn glistening to our right and the imposing Catstye Cam in view, the descent was breathtaking. Passing through the Gillside Plantation, we made our way back to Glenridding along a scenic path with plenty of photo spots and inviting dip pools.
To round off the day, we enjoyed a well-earned pint and meal at the Travellers Rest, reflecting on an incredible day’s hike through some of the Lake District’s most iconic landscapes.
