Our favorite Mopar shop decoration, the holy grail of Classic Cars, finally gets some long awaited parts as we get her ready for a fresh Ray Barton 426. New fuel tank, brake assemblies and super hard to find NOS solid lifters are all ready to go, plus a new Hurst shifter for banging gears with less fear of fragging the Elephant.

Tony.. you are absolutely correct on the gas tank gaskets. The new ones are too thin. Filled the tank in my 6 year build '64 Polara 426 wedge for the first time and had to run home and pull the tank so I could double up on the gaskets before all my money dribbled all over the floor of my garage.

Mopar switched from GM (Inland) shifters to Hurst shifters in the middle of the 1968 model year. The Super came out in the last half of the 1968 model year. Early 1968 Roadrunners got GM (Inland) shifters while all 1968 Superbees got Hurst shifters. The factory Mopar Hurst shifter had thicker shift rods than the aftermarket Hurst shifters for the Mopar 4 speed. The Mr. Gasket shift rods were thicker than the aftermarket Hurst shift rods, but still not as thick as the Mopar installed Hurst shift rods, which were a half inch in diameter.

hard to believe that the parts in my 67 dart are worth gold, due to chinesium and the parts shortage. i never thought that i'd live to see the day. well, i'm gonna keep it running as long as i can. i love my little dart, just as it is. slant-6, 3 on the tree, 1-barrel carb. beautiful in its simplicity. modern cars suck - too much electrotronicals. long live carburetors and am radios. i love you, tony. you're a good man in a lunatic world. i can always come to you and get the real thing, the truth. thanks.

I much prefer the 1968-1970 body style, but I like that one too. That car is too nice to beat up. I can see using it as a daily driver, but very carefully. Those cars don't grow on trees. It's not like you can just go out and buy a new one if it gets destroyed. If that is an original Hemi car, it is worth some serious money as well.

They actually do grow on trees in a parts catalogue and what can't be bought can be made again .What is the point of owning a garage queen unless it's a investment you can't afford to break ? You might as well beat the shit out of it and enjoy it , you might be dead before you can spend the money. It can be fixed no matter how bad you wreck it . Hell if you have a vin tag you can build a whole car from parts if you want to . While making a better car fixing all the known problems . Perfect example you could walk into a dealership today and buy a brand new hellcat in parts will cost you 100x more than a new one you can drive off the lot . Store it for 50 yrs and sell it for the same profit never having enjoyed it . Governments around the world are trying to kill these cars. Some day soon you will need a special permit to drive it to a car show . We beat the hell out of them when new, broke them fixed them and this car is going to be treated the same way hopefully . Far too many cars sitting in museums now that should be driven daily . Look at Jay lennos collection he has so many cars if he drove only 1 a day he could not drive them all in 1 year . If you add in his bike collection he would have to drive 4 different things daily to drive them all in 1 year .

In 1978 I replaced a Dana 60 axle shaft in a 1968 GTX. The replacement axle shaft was bought new at the dealer in 1978. The one that came out had bent at the flange from sliding into curb, but it didn't break, which is unusual for stock axles. The original axle shaft had its diameter turned down in the middle to reduce weight. The new replacement axle shaft from Mopar was full thickness its entire length, but it did fit, with the correct splines and length.

The only solution I found to the leaking sending unit seal was to get a lock ring and a seal from Detroit Muscle Technologies. They have an eBay store. Both the seal and the lock ring were much thicker than the stuff you get at Rock Auto. Got one for my '68 Fury VIP, and no more leaks.

Interesting comments on the lifter coating. Seems like that could help with the epidemic of dead cams. It won't fix the collapsed lifter issue you highlighted in another video, but something like the anti-scuff coatings they put on piston skirts could give that little bit of extra lubrication while the cam and lifters work harden. It could go on the lifter bottoms or the cam lobes either one.

It's weird how much fun I had under a classic car that I had pulled half apart. I honestly beleive that it's a sickness. Sometimes I think building it and having people stop by the shop to talk to me about it was much cooler than driving the thing around. I even crawled under _friends_ classic cars to see how they were different from mine while _they_ fixed something. I have no problem with people who have the money to buy classics and they treat them right, but it's another thing entirely with the respect I have for people who did the work themselves.

Was there a video done by UTG on the 66 W-30 442?? I think I stated before I bought a 1966 Olds 442 from the original owner in 1983. Silver/Black interior. He had the 400 factory replaced at the dealership with a 66 Toronado ( High compression) 425 adding the W-30 ( red inner front fender wheel wells) specific Camshaft and Tri-power intake. The 4 speed was blown up and in the trunk ( 2nd gear teeth sheared) I put an early BOP Turbo 400 using a Pinto shifter out the 4 speed hump with the 70 era Remington XT 120 G/60/14's on steel rims and a set of Gabriel "High Jacker" air shocks-he put the bunny stickers in the rear 1/4 glass windows- Car was originally sold in the Sharon/Mercer PA. Area. I'm quite sure someone has this car-hopefully- and it has been restored. Who can tell me at a glance the difference between a run of the mill F-85 and a 442?? I learned it because he took all external 442 badging off- except the yellow,orange,red- 442 dash plaque. Only street races I can remember losing was against a 70 Buick GSX and a 69 Hemi Road Runner

I read in hot rod magazine back in the early 90s 101 tech tips - unless your going for that full restoration look you can paint your new gas tank with high temp 500 degree aluminum engine paint . it has ceramic in the paint which acts as an insulator while the aluminum helps keep the gas tank cool by refecting the heat coming from engine/ tranny and heat up off the pavement . I start with painting the top letting it dry for a 48 hours then the bottome 😎👍

Thumbs up👍 Tony and crew. 🙂 I love that the GTX is coming together with all the right parts.. but now I hear you guys saying there's got a Hurst shifter.. and he's going to get on it, and Bang gears and stuff you.. know I don't got to tell you. you know this already but put the main studs back in.. it'll keep the Caps from walking when he revs this thing, cuz I know it's going to go past 6500. Plus it already had the maim studs in when it was a line bored, so and it doesn't interfere with nothing you put the windage tray back on and the oil pan. everything you know that.. I'm talking to the choir but anyway just use the main studs instead of the bolts...🙏 okay Godspeed 🙏😇

Finally, back to working on the GTX. It sounds like you’ve got yourself some good parts, which will ensure a good car and happy owner. I’ve said it before, those 69 and earlier clutch release bearing assemblies are worth their weight in gold. I guess either someone doesn’t think there’s enough cars to justify remaking them, or they just don’t know how badly they are needed. That’s why you see early cars like yours driving around with old worn out release bearings.

The trouble with the wilwood aftermarket disc brake conversion is they give you the lightweight rotors that have the cooling slits cut in them at the root of the rotors that are only suited for drag racing. and if you do any decent road miles they end up warping within 3000 miles

The reaso why im saying this is because today i seen a chart with all the different SUVs from eropean to american to japanese and they all had the same body lines and similar windows... boring...
