That’s just the tip of the iceberg. The scriptment is VERY sexually charged. One of the first things you learn about Peter is that he’s a virgin, which ultimately has no bearing on the plot. I get it- the powers are supposed to represent puberty, but it’s super gratuitous in this.

I remember seeing the Spider-Man costume meant for this movie and liking it. It felt very old school. As for the actual script, I think it would be been good. Peter was a morally conflicted character, and was often a jackass. Very accurate and realistic. I didn't like the Electro/ Kingpin hybrid. Thought that was odd.

Part of me really wishes this film happened but mainly for the dark weirdness, but we still got that with Raimi's near perfect take. Plus some of his scenes had the darkness, grit, and weirdness in spades, like Spiderman defending MJ from attackers in a dark alley, the final punch up between Peter and Norman, Otto's arms coming to life and killing yhe surgeons trying to save him, or Spidey's brutal take down of Sandman in the subway.

Call me crazy, but I think an angsty version Spider-Man that’s slightly more violent towards criminals could make sense, if executed properly. Think about it, Peter Parker was bullied a lot in high school by people like Flash Thompson. Maybe Cameron’s film could’ve explored how the bullying would rub off on Peter in a negative way that also affects how he operates as Spider-Man

Has anyone heard how Cameron came on board Spider-Man? First he was going to produce and possibly write an X-Men movie directed by his then wife, Kathryn Bigalow. He met with Marvel. Everything was going great, and all parties were excited about making the movie. Then Stan Lee said, you know what'd be great, a Spider-Man movie. Cameron then started gushing like a fanboy with Stan about this, and the X Men movie was never discussed again.

I actually like this story better than amazing 1 and homecoming. Especially the part about Spiderman going on tv shows to earn money. That’s directly ripped from the og comics. And lot of the motives of the characters make sense to me. Like mj/teenager seeking love to escape real world problems, peter acting selfish and being emotionally driven (that’s also exactly how he is in the first issue). It’s actually more believable for me for Spiderman to be not the first of his kind and those with these gifts are already in power behind the scenes quietly seeking others like them. Electro using negative media/smear campaign by bribing jj to turn Spiderman into a vigilante is a really nice tie in.

I honestly really liked Cameron's treatment, and it's better than what people say. I didn't mind the darker tone because that's what was popular in the early 90s after the success of Batman 89. (Despite Batman Returns and TMNT 1990 effecting darker adaptations from happening.) I also liked the more aggressive Peter because that's the kind of kid that would act like that being bullied. I also prefer this Electro over the comic where he's basically Donald Trump with powers. (Come to think, this cartoony villain wouldn't be so cartoonish nowadays.) The suit's description sounded directly from the comics and even the large triangle lenses sounded McFarlane. And Camsron understood Peter's consequences and his responsibilities he has to learn. The downsides are some of the humors Is VERY 90s and really structure of the plot too. Also, M.J.'s character was really bitchy at first but thankfully she grew on me near the end. David Koepp wanted to use Cameron's story for the 2002 movie back in 1999 before using Goblin and Doc Ock and he even made a full script of Cameron's you can read on his website. Another thing is that because this would in the 90s, many things would be real on camera, a actual set, a real man swinging screws the city via helicopter, and Leonardo DeCaprio would actually wear a real suit on set that isn't covered in CG. And most of the effects I bet would look amazing with Sandamn, Electro's powers and Spider-Man's swinging shots. While I still love the Raimi trilogy better, It could've been fascinating to see this. If you're a fan of the TASM film, you're more likely to like this scriptment than if you're fan of Raimi's with the darker tone and more rebellious Peter. But Spidey is still here and there's still good highlights in there as well.
@Gideon13397
@Gideon13397 2 жыл бұрын
James Cameron would have definitely went full on with the CG though. He's pretty well known for that. Honestly, I think this would have turned out awful but in a good way, I for one would have liked to see it just for the experience of those bizarre sounding subplots. It would be cool to see this script to get adapted into a graphic novel, or as a mini series of comics. Kind of how DC has done comics based on the 60s 70s Batman and wonder woman shows, the Chris reeves Superman and Burton Batman movies. So with that idea marvel could adapt it into a comic

Okay. I'm just gonna say it... This movie was NOT supposed to be rated R!!!! I am sick in tired of all these articles/vids saying it. All because it has ONE F-bomb? There so many PG-13 movies that had at least one in there. The sex scene on the bridge never went too graphic or any nudity in the scriptment. By that logic, Howard the Duck should be rated R because there was a sex scene in there. That was how 90s movies were made at at time. Even if everything was filmed, James Cameron would've had to take scenes like that out since this would out by a time when superhero movies were being geared towards children and a time when the 1994 Spider-Man series was just out. (The show couldn't have anyone say "kill" or "die" and guns had to have Lazer sounds) so can you imagine the amount of censored ship they would've used. Hell, Batman Returns's original script had R rated material taken out, like a scene with children being taken away and murdered by Penguin's circus gang, or the Penguin giving Catwoman a umbrella with a dildo in it. (Geuss what was left in the movie?)

I believe this version of Spider-Man/Peter Parker is comic accurate af to his 1st appearance. Peter was very petty, angsty, and used his powers for personal reasons. It's pretty realistic to how a low income teenager, whose felt week for a long time would act. It's pretty standard story as well, which I don't mind considering the script was written in the 80s/90s. MJ's character was pretty basic tho

I agree completely. It's bizarre that people want to make Spider-Man as morally pure as Superman to me. He was an immature, attention-seeking, cynical incel that lashed out at criminals because he was getting bullied and became friends with the notorious show-off Johnny Storm. They made a car together even though neither of them needed one. Watching him always improving but never quite becoming a full-on hero was the whole draw to his early run; you didn't root for him, you wanted to see the responsibilities he had to shoulder slowly turn him into a better person.

@@AbandonedVoid I don’t think that’s entirely true. While Peter did struggle a lot and wasn’t as altruistic at first, he was written to be more relatable than other heroes. He deals with real world problems and acts like most at the time would. He isn’t perfect cause people aren’t, and those imperfections and struggles are what attached to so many people. I think the closest we got to a Peter like this is actually Andrew Garfield’s. Until he saves the family on the bridge, he’s immature, selfish, and angry at the world, similar to his run.

I’m currently working on a Spider-Man series of my own, and surprisingly, this scriptment (along with the Ultimate comics) are big influences. It’s not a direct rip but the series is set in the 90’s with grunge/alternative rock as the score and backdrop. Peter uses music (namely Soundgarden) to cope with his situation and the world is really dark and gritty, however Peter is bright, happy, optimistic and acts as the beacon of light in a world of darkness. Sure he has moments where he wants to give up but he always remembers to keep his head up and do the right thing. It’s still in the planning stages so many aspects are subject to change but me and a close friend of mine are always making small bits of progress :)

I've heard about this script. It has some interesting and cool ideas and concepts. It's amazing that James Cameron was the one who came up with the idea of the organic web-shooters. In hindsight, I'm glad that the film was never made because the script sounded as if it needed a few more rewrites to fine tune it. Plus, we wouldn't have seen Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, and Tom Holland's iterations of the character. After thinking about it for a while, the idea of an R-rated Spider-Man film does sound fascinating, despite the fact that the character is extremely popular with children and teenagers (and adults). It can potentially work if you're extremely careful with how you handle this character and how the story is written. I actually like some of the things in the script. I like the organic web-shooters, I like some of the action scenes, the villains were surprisingly pretty good, and the sexual undertones of Peter's metamorphosis were intriguing. But the script still had several problems that would've likely hindered the film. The writing was kind of clunky, at times, the story structure was off, and certain scenes just didn't feel quite right in terms of atmosphere. Yet, the biggest problem of all is that the main character was acting way out of character for the character he's supposedly based on. In this script, Peter Parker/Spider-Man behaved like an unbecoming, ill-tempered creep. I'm not saying that the character didn't behave like a moody, reckless jerk, at times. But, the way the James Cameron script had described him, it's like that's his entire personality. Not to mention, he does stuff in the script that keeps me thinking, "Is this really Peter Parker/Spider-Man? Who is this guy? Am I suppose to be rooting for this guy?" Look, there's nothing wrong with creating a different take of a well-known character, but it still has to stay true to the essence of that particular character. Paraphrasing what you said, James Cameron usually does a good job writing endearing characters. Yet, somehow, he basically missed the mark in this case and didn't seem to understand who the character of Peter Parker/Spider-Man truly is and what he represents. It's astonishing. I don't think that most people would've taken this version of the character too well if the film would've been made. Situations like this show that there's nothing wrong with doing some rewrites sometimes.

@@HemmasStudios_ Thank you. I truly think that if James Cameron spent more time making sure that Peter Parker/Spider-Man was more likable and charming in this script, perhaps it would've been a bit better. One of the main things that you don't want, as a writer, is for the main character in your story to be unlikable and detestable to the point where the readers or audiences aren't rooting for him or her. And that's how I felt reading and listening to this script.

Besides the sneaking to watch MJ... thing the progression of her character in this as far as her and Peters relationship is much better. That might be do to how she’s used in SM2 and much of 3. I like the shy Peter we get in the Raimi movies though I’ve been told it’s not quite to that extreme in the comics. That’s fine by me I relate to it more.
