I had around 8 subscribers at the time of this video, and if I'd known it would one day get a million views I never would have made this. Therefore, my arguments aren't the most thought out and the audio sounds like it was recorded in a bin. Keep that in mind while you watch it! Also since making this, I've come to appreciate the original comics way more, so it's completely unfair to say its characters are one-dimensional. I think I was referring to Stan's style of dialogue, but just because it's dated doesn't mean it's bad. Stan's original run remains one of the best in comic history, and his characters were very complex. I still agree with most of what I said in this video but I wouldn't do it at the expense of the old comics.

It kinda irritates me when people just Portay J Jonah Jameson as "Literally Alex Jones" rather than acknowledging his nuances as a character and that he can be a pretty good journalist in matters that DONT involve Spider-Man I mean If you want a soulless hack fraud who rags on superheroes solely to further their own career, Sally Floyd is right there.

I wholeheartedly agree with everyone who recommends this run as an introduction into the Spider-Man comics. Sure, you get some weird details that are exclusive quirks of the ultimate universe, but it all works to create a cohesive narrative that works from start to (almost) finish. I read it years ago and it didn’t really do it for me at first, but after stumbling upon Prodigy’s motion comic series of it and getting to experience it at a better pace, I’ve gained a new appreciation for it.

I feel out of the live action Spider-Man actors, the closest to this version of the character is Andrew Garfield. People want to think Peter Parker is upbeat and positive 90% of the time, but he's got a lot on his plate and always had a bit of angst in his character. Ultimate Spider-Man, to me, emphasis this to show how difficult being a teenage superhero really would be and I love that. Yeah, he's hit heated at times, but wouldn't you be at that age and had to deal with everything he does? Andrew Garfield, to me, feels like he took a lot of inspiration from this run to try be relatable to every kid and teen who's ever felt overwhelmed and like they can't handle it anymore. Despite feeling that way too, he always gets back and and continue on because it's his responsibility

@@The_Blue_Otaku I feel like it's a perfect blend of both with a little Raimi sprinkled in. Spectacular Eddie Brock was the closest we've ever gotten to Ultimate Eddie Brock on screen. Peter's childhood friend, both of their parents died in same plane crash, and his anger toward Peter stems from Peter trying to destroy the Symbiote. He also has a thing for Gwen in both versions Spectacular Gwen's role in the story is very similar to Ultimate MJ's. (Peter's best friend in high school, with him when he gets bitten by spider, eventual love interest, love triangle with Harry) It includes Kenny "Kong" McFarlane, a character created specifically for Ultimate Spider-Man Spectacular Peter goes to high school with MJ, Harry, and Gwen like in the Ultimate Universe. In the Marvel Universe, he never ment any of them until college. @@rgmfg Bendis retconned that Peter had been alive this whole time. Or rather, he was resurrected not long after his funeral in some abandoned laboratory in Los Angeles, hitchhiking across the country to make it back home. Oh and Green Goblin was also alive this whole time as well, revealing that the OZ formula is some kind of immortality formula that will keep bringing them back to life no matter how many times they are killed. Which also should mean Harry Osborne, Mary Jane, and Gwen Stacy should also be immortal as they too were exposed to OZ, but that never comes up. I think Bendis was gearing up for some kind of storyline involving Peter and his resurrection, that maybe it wasn't the OZ formula that brought him back. But Secret Wars happened, anything with the name Ulimate was cancelled, and Miles was brought over to the Mainstream Marvel universe, while the company refuses to bring back the Ultimate Universe.

Had lots of love-hate relationship with the Ultimate universe, but the only exception was the Ultimate Spider-Man run. Got a more believable Peter as a kid, love Mary Jane and Gwen’s style to being my headcanon clothing for them, Peter and Kitty’s relationship was actually so adorable, it always stand out for me, Jessica Drew being a clone of Spider-Man, Debatably my favorite Aunt May (going back and forth with the PS Aunt May), Spider-Man literally taking a bullet for Captain America, Jameson witnessing and admitting Spider-Man is a hero, and the aftermath of Peter’s death. And then when I thought It was good enough for me to put down the Ultimate Spider-Man run, I read Miles Morales’ run as the next Spider-Man at a Barnes and Nobles and I immediately love his character, his lore, that crossover when he met 616 Spider-Man for the first time and ended up my definitive favorite Ultimate character. I still regret it took years for me to know the character rather than hearing controversy. Head scratching Ultimate Peter came back, but with Miles going to the main marvel universe and main marvel universe Miles went to the Ultimate universe, I think it balanced it out.

I got lucky with this series - I grew up getting into Spider-Man through the animated series in the '90s so I was already a fan but then I worked in a news agent in 2003 and picked up a copy off the shelf. Then I became obsessed and loved the series - the PS2 game is one of my favourites too. Unfortunately when Peter died, I was gutted and put the series down - I only learnt about Miles later. I wish I hadn't stopped reading but oh well.

Ultimate Spider-Man was the most I've ever bonded with Peter and the rest of the Spidey cast. Early parts of the series are so dated in the late 90s/early 00s but it still manages to be so charming. I fell so in love with his series that I just couldn't bring myself to read Miles' adventures because this interpretation of Peter was so good. Also say what you will about Bendis but he made a legitimately good Spider-man clone saga, that's a feat worth praise.

Really love Ultimate Spidey, bought the first issue when it came out and eventually got all of them....it was fresh take on the mythos in a Marvel Universe outside the 616...Being a fan since the 80s...I was hyped for the new take since I had stopped reading the 616 after the clone debacle. Bendis did great on his writing...and having my fave post Todd/Erik artist drawing it (Bagley) was a no brainer. Even their take on the clone saga was better. I honestly was pissed when USM died.....he has barely scratch the surface and felt MM was just a big token...I'm a fan of ORIGINAL characters, not all heroes should be a legacy character, unless it works for their story (Phantom, Black Panther) MM did grow on me....and I enjoyed his Ultimate era better. The movie ITSV was phenomenal. Shoutouts to Donald Glover.

You know, it actually makes a lot of sense that Peter came back. Norman had already been established to come back again and again after he should be extremely dead ( he came back from a headshot after all). As a plot twist, the revival works, the Goblin's repeated revival makes a lot more sense when it's explained that Oz formula gives semi-immortality (apparently it is exhaustible, as norman was implied to be perma-dead after his fight with the spiders)

I had a great time listening and watching and you're right; some of Bendis' stories brought tears to my eyes too. Ultimate Spider-Man were some of the first Marvel comics I ever read after watching the first Raimi movie back in the stone age. They (alongside the the original Lee/Ditko and JMS runs) are what define Spider-man to me. Thank you so much for shining a light on these stories. At times, it feels like contemporary nerd/pop culture has forgotten comics in favor of the MCU, but the kind of intimate, slow-burn, emotional storytelling you’re talking about here is mostly missing from the movie format, so I hope your videos can get more people to dive back into the comics.

Ultimate Spider-Man just has so many of my all time favorite things in comics. Ultimate Kitty Pryde is probably one of the best comic book heroes ever made, and her relationship with Peter is the best relationship he's ever had in any universe, in my opinion. Her fantasy panel at his funeral where they were married is one of my favorite panels ever, plus she just straight up punches Galactus in the face. It was really cool seeing mutants step out of the shadow of the X-Men and doing their own thing. Obviously there were a lot of issues, but they mostly stemmed from the Ultimate universe as a whole. The soft reset after Ultimatum where it starts with him dating Gwen for some reason, bringing him back from the grave where he pulls a Metro Man and just retires despite the whole "With great power comes great responsibility" thing (even though he does eventually come back, but still), and some others. But even with the flaws, I really wish they hadn't ended the Ultimate universe. I feel like with the Spider-Verse movie basically starting up at the Miles portion of the Ultimate Spider-Man story, we probably won't get a full Ultimate Spider-Man or Ultimate Universe series, but I'll still wish for one. ALSO IF ANYONE WANTS TO READ ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN OR ANY OF THE ULTIMATE UNIVERSE, I highly recommend Marvel Unlimited. Basically Netflix but for Marvel comics. It has every Marvel comic, available to be read digitally, for just like $10 a month. You can do one month, binge everything, and then cancel it, and it will be the best $10 you ever spent (or keep it going and just read every Marvel comic). Definitely an easy and cheap way to enjoy the series while still supporting the creators, and honestly way easier and convenient than just pirating the comics individually. 12/10, highly recommend Marvel Unlimited, download the app on your mobile device today or check out the website.

Personally I like spiderman when he's not attached to anything bigger than "your friendly neighborhood spiderman" My favorite series of spiderman was the spectacular spiderman animated series. There was no other heros, no shield agency, no human extinction level threat. It was a simple story of a high school kid with super powers. Fighting crime at night and dealing with teen drama during the day. I never enjoyed when the comics or other TV series kept making his secret identity revealed to his friends or family or even the world. There's just something about his ability to keep his secret identity a secret that gives the story a lot more spice and thrill. Don't get me wrong. I love ultimate spiderman and the huge battles he faces with the other marvel heros. But I always felt like the spectacular spiderman was more relatable in the sense he seemed so much like a normal kid which in turn made the show better since he also had to carry the responsibility of being a hero.

While I do agree that ultimate is alot more realistic, I think it does alot of stuff that are weird and good or weird and bad. For example, having Peter be more prone to anger is realistic but its weird for the character. And alot of things happen in very distasteful ways like gwen and Peter viewing each other as siblings yet they dated each other, Eddie having a personal connection with Peter works on paper, but not in execution, and I think they destroyed black cats character. The one good character change i personally enjoy is doc ock as its alot better than 616. But even with all of this, I still love ultimate. Maybe its just because of my bias with the game lol

So did the Tobey Maguire movies, tbh. The tone is more golden age, but some aspects of the story and some aesthetic choices were based on the early Ultimate comics. -the spider being genetically altered instead of radioactive -the spider coming from Oscorp -Green Goblin being Spidey's first super villain -Harry being Pete's only friend in high school despite being kind of a rich kid douchebag -the goblin being an Oscorp human enhancement experiment gone wrong due to Norman's own ego -Peter making a horribly lame wrestling outfit -Mary Jane getting thrown off the bridge, and being saved (instead of the old comics, it was Gwen on the bridge and she died) -Doc Ock horrifically murdering people with his tentacles -Harry being manipulated by his allegedly dead father into trying to kill Spider-man Honestly every single Spider-man adaptation since the 2000's has taken some inspiration from the Ultimate comics. Tom Holland's adaptation takes more from the 2009-2011 era of Ultimate Spider-man, combining the Ultimates' mentorship with Miles Morales's smart kid school and best friend (Ganke/Ned).

This is the video I watched when I was recently wondering "Where should I start reading Spider-Man? Is it worth it?" and I've gotta say, even with this video spoiling a lot (not nearly all) of the major events it's still a great read. I only read up through 160 for now, and likely will read through to issue 200, but I'm honestly not too sure after that very last panel you showed. I don't even remember that from my first view of this video, but with the gripes I have with 160s ending already, I think seeing that sort of rubs salt in the wound. Overall I really like the 160 issues I read though, it was more than worth the time, and while I wish some things were tighter in the final few years or that Peter's demise made a little more sense I kind of accept it because by the time you get there you realize that that's just how Bendis writes. Love it or hate it, he's willing to turn his story completely on its head and take a major risk even with main characters that have a lot of development behind them. Sometimes I think it gets a little too crazy, or too shocking, for its own good but overall I'd say the risks make reading more exciting even after watching something like this that laid a lot of it out before I'd even touched the series.

You the loss of Ultimate Spider-Man really did hurt me when I read it. I’ve never been as attached to a version of Spider-Mans surrounding world as much as I was in this story. It’s probably easily my favorite Spider-Man world just because it feels the most real to me. So many good characters. So much was lost though with the death of Peter… We no longer had a constant window into that world. It was replaced by Miles… I think that’s why I’ve always had a kinda dislike for miles morales. He meant the end to one of my favorite incarnations of the character. That’s why honestly after Peters death I couldn’t put myself through Miles books.. I just couldn’t. It hurt.. so instead I went through them to try to see if Peter ever came back but even when he did nothing much came from it. Sure the reason he’s alive is stupid but I didn’t care much I just wanted that world back. It honestly saddens me that I will never get it back. Miles Morales has become a great character but I hate the original version because he meant the loss of one of my favorite versions of Spider-Man.

I also generally feel like the original version of Miles Morales kind of has a few issues, mostly that there isn't enough to seperate him from Peter Parker and that he seems to be kinda...to mild. Into the Spiderverse made some genius changes to Miles Morales which I hope will slowly creep into comics, which made him much more of a person of his own. Like, him being really into arts, which differenciates him greatly as a person from Peter. The Uncle Aaron changes are just objectively better. Like, in the original comic, Aaron was just such a mean psychopath and there wasn't really anything for Miles character to gain, outside of being abused and traumatized. Aaron deeply caring about Miles and being killed because of it on the other hand offers a great uncle Ben-esque moment, while the context is really different. Though I think the best change made to Miles is, to give him a whole different origin theme, instead of learning that with great power comes great responsibility, which Miles just doesn't needs to learn because he is already a kid living in a world where Spider-Man is a role model that inspires, its him learning to do that leap of faith. The leap of faith was fully unique to Miles and a great arc to jumpstart him into being his own Spiderman. I think one big problem Bendis has with specifically writing super heroes is really him holding back and being too focussed to make the character a role model and inspirational, which contradicts with his core strength of writing messy and realistic characters. I believe he wants to sincerely wants to write characters like Miles and Riri and creat more black legacy character, him having a black daughter, and that he has the best intentions, I just feel like he falls into the trap of being too sensitive about his black leads.

You'll love Spectacular Spiderman In the show, Jameson starts off just printing whatever spiderman pictures Peter gives him, but after his son's dangerous life threatening space landing back home, he notices nobody cared about it, he saw his son an astronaut as a real hero but the media nowadays only painted spiderman as a hero, so Jameson made it his mission to taint the spidey's reputation by making fake and misleading stories painting Spidey as a menace Flash also gets a character arc that turns him good and during the symbiote arc, Flash is the only one Peter listens to, because he's Flash, the last guy you'd expect to get help from The cartoon had a knack of including villains way before they became villains and it's a shame it got canceled, the show had planned for 5 seasons with multiple mini movies, but only ended up getting 2 seasons with the third being hinted to include scorbion, Carnage, and probably Gwens death

The ultimate universe was the one I grew up with, for better or worse XD Here in Brasil, to publish comic books issues individually, just like in the US, is simply inviable, so ever since american comics started being published here it's in this model we call mix, which is pulling a bunch of related (though, sometimes not) comics into only one issue per month and there you have it, which started to change very recently, but I'm not getting into it. That said, all the ultimate titles were published in only one book, so you could have a taste of it all at once and it was perfect for a poor kid like me. I have almost all of the issues from 01 to a bit over 100 and the first relaunch, but unfortunately some late issues wouldn't arrive in my city for months, I started going to college and wouldn't pass by newsstands (which started to die off only recently, too) on regular as I used to, so I ended up quitting buying them and not getting the whole Peter death/Miles' introduction when it came out. To this day, I love this series whole heartedly and it's great to see it getting the love it deserves and not being just _the alternate Spider-Man that doesn't really count_ That was a great vid, I'm subscribing to your channel right now!

And (long shot), but I wanna see the 1610 Spidey suit in the 2023 game, but with the model style like with the Spider-Clan suit, or Miles’ Animated suit which was a homage to his first on-screen debut back on the Ultimate Spider-Man show (6/10; liked the series, but doesn’t quite give it that “Ultimate” feel. Still better than 2017’s, tho.)

11:40 you can see he's getting emotional just by talking about this comic, I can relate to that so fucking much, everyone has that one thing that it's so carved at our memories that we can't hold back our emotions, to me one of those things is Riley crying while being hugged by her parents at the end of "inside out", or every single Miles morales scene at into the spiderverse, and I'm not joking when I say "every single one", these and so many others gives chills down my spine and genuinely almost makes me cry when I watch or play those things again

There is always an artist that gives the definitive version of a character, kinda what Garth Ennis did with Punisher, outside the job Stan Lee and Steve Ditko did, Brian Michael Bendis gave us the definitive Spider-Man.

I recently finished this series after many years of reading it and this video is right on the money as to how I feel about it. I really love ultimate Spider-Man's teen-drama esque escalations of situations or developments in dialogue and characters. This series felt so real to me as well. Keep doing what you love doing Alex.

This Ultimate storyline felt like a true source to the original Spiderman comics by Stan Lee.

I remember my uncle owning the first 7 issues in one hard cover book and seeing my uncle play the Ultimate Spider-Man video game on PS2. Recently throughout all of last month I’ve been reading the Ultimate Spider-Man while at work and I’ve been hooked on it. It’s an amazing series.

The Ultimate comics are the best cause they encompass everything that’s great about every character, it’s in a realistic setting for ppl like me who love movies and need a sense of reality that exists in this fandom, and they keep Peter young so his problems and feelings are justified unlike a grown up Peter who still acts like a teen.

I'd like to add the first Spider-Men comic as part of ultimate, the scene where 616 Peter meets Aunt May and Gwen tears me up every single time

I love pretty much everything about Ultimate Spider-Man except for a few character designs. I also wish Peter didn't fucking die but without Miles we wouldn't get Into the Spider-Verse (my favourite piece of fiction ever) so it's fine.

As someone who’s read every 616 Spider-Man comic, I used to read this series while waiting for my tpbs (books that include issues of the mainline comics) to come from the library

At the time Ultimatum happened I wasn’t used to reading bad comics. I, like, didn’t understand why it was weird until later when someone just said that shit sucked 😂. I was like, “Yeah, I guess it does.”

Ultimate Spider-Man (The Game) introduced me on the comic as it pretty much looks vivid and the world is very colorful yet it still captures the "Comic" aesthetic along with being able to play as Venom which is a complete game changer as it completely changes the play style. You can fight criminals as Spider-Man and screw everything as Venom so what else is good? Storyline, it captured what i read in the comics and completely kept its uniqueness while having it animated. The designs of the comic is very likable and Peter is very relatable to me and he has a very fleshed out character, he captured how most teenagers act while still keeping his sense of justice and such. I loved how they portrayed all characters especially Venom

I seriously started reading this comic bc the title sounded cool. I read the first 40 issues in a day and I was hooked. And i just kept going and going and eventually I read ultimatum, and I just fell in love with not only spiderman but the entire universe that he’s in, I love jonny storm’s character, I loved bobby’s character. After the death of spiderman, I instantly went on to fallout and then miles’ story. And then i fell in love with miles even more than i did before. I read everything to secret wars (which btw i don’t recommend reading secret wars it’s VERY confusing) basically what i’m trying to say. I LOVE this series. Everything about it is great and i truly wish it just kept going. Currently i’m reading the Ultimate X-men because that’s how much i fell in love with the universe. Great video btw you’re a VERY underrated channel!
