Hens aren't fools when it comes to babies. They use chirps and noises that are unique to the ones it raises so that It dosnt get confused with others. This chick was really lucky to have been accepted, other wise it would have been rejected. If u want a chick to be with a different hen u need to place it in night when they cant see for a few days until it get used to it with its eggs.

yes she did bond with the baby chick. As you can see, she allows it under her wing. A hen who doesn't think the baby is "hers" will literally peck the baby to keep it away. A lot of hens are not broody. But when they are, they don't leave the eggs for very long, in hopes of hatching her brood.
@nicholas84794 жыл бұрын
So that's where the term broody came from?
@judejude87464 жыл бұрын
So that's why common sense should tell you to do it at night. Remove the eggs and replace with the chick. Otherwise you were apparently taking more of a chance that hen would Peck that little chick to death by doing it the way you did. Apparently that isn't a "mean" hen since she accepted the chick.

I remember when we first got our chicken Bingo. We had a bunch of baby chicks and four hens, Friday, Tilly, skittle, and Piper. Bingo loved to jump on top of the hens and sit on them. The only hen that didnt knock her off in confusion was Skittle. Skittle let bingo sit on her back and she would try to be gentle with her. Skittle is very motherly to bingo and it’s adorable. Bingo is too big to sit on Skittle’s back now, but she still loves to hang around her!

Did you know that chickens in the wild, and domesticated hens too, tend to lay eggs in the same nest ? Broody hens will incubate any egg, even non chicken egg, so I'm sure they don't care whose babies they are raising. It's all instinct. A mother hen will raise ducklings if you let her incubate duck's eggs.

As a person who owns chickens, honestly I've never seen a chicken do that with a chick. I've seen them kill the baby chicks but never "bond" with them, so yeah this is surprising.
@MeowBockbock884 жыл бұрын
Well, if the chick is small enough, the probability that the mother hen will accept the chick is high. But if the chick is bigger, even just a bit, the hen will peck and chase it away. I did this several times, the mother hen brood over empty egg, and never become a mom. So I put a small chick (probably hatched for a few days) and the mother hen accepted her as her own.
@alejandromuralles1814 жыл бұрын
@@MeowBockbock88 we'll that is true, I've seen chickens accept about any kind of baby after hatching them even a day or two after they hatched from another mother or a incubator. It's funny to see a chicken raise a duckling, but like you said, if the baby is a little to old the chicken won't want him.
