After years of wilt leading the league in scoring, he was getting called greedy for taking all the glory. So then he started assisting instead of scoring and then one night someone said he couldn't score anymore. So the next night he dominated the game and then after that he went back to assisting. Stats are great as long as they lead to wins.

They had to change rules of the game because of Wilt. He did everything. The Harlem Globetrotters said that he would routinely hit 25 foot hook shots in practice and in games. And hit 25 foot hook shots and jumpers routinely. If blocks were recorded back in his day, he would be the leader in quadruple doubles. I have him as the GOAT. With MJ and Larry in the two and three spot. Great vid and reaction bro!

Wilt was a Philly kid, and decided to go to Kansas, because wanted a change of scenery, didn't want to go to the south (because of the racial segregation at the time) or to New England, so that left the midwest, where he then picked Kansas. (Apparently, UCLA offered him a moviestar role and Pennsylvania offered him diamonds and to hire his highschool coach XD) Also, the Celtics' coach, Red Auerbach, scouted him and had him play 1-on-1 against the 1953 NCAA finals' MVP B.H. Born (ironically from Kansas). Wilt won the match 25-10, demoralizing Born to the point of giving up basketball (he said that if there were highschoolers that good he'd have no chance in the pros :P). Auerbach then wanted Wilt to enlist in New England in order to have him as a territorial pick, but Wilt never answered.

Of course he scored 100 and averaged 50. If he played today he could average 50. This is why. That season he played every minute of every game basically. He averaged over a point a minute. If you played him that way today I’m sure he could average 50. But with today’s minutes, let’s say he only played 35 minutes a game. He would basically give you 35 points. If you take off a bit for the pace of the game, 30-32 points- the same average as Jordan or Shaq in his best years. I think that’s perfectly fair. If it was that easy to average 50 a game someone would have done it by now. It isn’t and even Wilt didn’t. His next best season he averaged 44. You need the basketball skill and the physical skill. Even Jordan with his great basketball skills, he never came close to 50 because the coaches didn’t want to wear him out or risk injury. Wilt’s amazing athletic body enabled him to play the minutes other great players couldn’t. You can argue basketball but when it comes to the greatest athlete to ever play, there’s no doubt.

If Wilt played today he would not average 50 ppg. Why would any coach today allow their center to take that many shots? The game today is dominated by guard play and 3-pt shooting. Even centers take 3-pointers. Another factor is that teams today take nowhere near the number of shots they took back in the 1960's. In the 1961-62 season the league averaged 107.7 FGA per games per team. Last season the league averaged just 88.3 FGA per game per team. So teams last season averaged about 20 FEWER shots per game than in 1961-62. Now multiple 20 by 82 games and you get over 1,600 fewer FGA's. That's a huge number. That would severely reduce Wilt scoring opportunities compared to 1961-62. I have no doubt in my mind Wilt could dominate today but his stats would be more in line with the stats of Giannis and Embid, maybe a bit better. But Wilt ain't averaging 50 ppg today because the modern game is not set up for him to do that.

Wilt, Kareem, Hakeem, Shaq,Russell. I'm also from new England and am a Celtics fan. Russell was the greatest defender ever. Awesome impact on the floor. However, if you look at the offensive stats he looks like Allen Iverson. He wasn't as balanced as the other 4. Wilt led the league in assists 1 year at center. At a time when assists were given for layups and dunks only. An era where blocks weren't counted either. It's estimated that Russell would be the all time leader in blocks on the same scale as Stockton is for assists. Wilt would be 2nd all time in blocks, while being the greatest offensive force. Stupid fg% too. Kareem had almost the talent of wilt but was a more disciplined person in general. Then his personal awards which are only outdone by Jordan. Hakeem is like bird in that he has a short career before injuries, but was insanely efficient, and complete like Wilt and Kareem. Shaq is very underrated in my opinion.

He CHOSE to lead the league in assist because a sportswriter called him out on just being able to score and rebound :P So, after averaging 24, 24 and 7,8apg the previous season ('66-'67) he averaged 24, 24 and 8,6 in '67-'68, having the most assists in total in the league. Looking at the stats, that sportswriter seemed silly, though. In the 1967 playoffs, Wilt already averaged 21,7, 29 and 9. Playing against Cincinnati (with Oscar Robertson), the Celtics (and Bill Russell); the Celtics had won the title *8* (!!!) years in a row. Meeting San Francisco (and Rick Barry and Nate Thurmond) in the finals, leading Philadelphia in rebounds each game and in assists 12 of 15 games. And winning the title, obviously :) As stated in the video, there was no fMVP trophy at the time, or it would've gone to Wilt (averaged 18-28-7 in 48 minutes).

What’s crazy about him changing up his game and passing more was that the coaches in Philly essentially got him to play more like bill Russell. Still dominate but less volume and more quality. He began focusing on defense and rebounding and setting up his teammates. He had much better teammates in Philly and La so there was no need for him to put up crazy scoring numbers all the time.

You nailed it on the head. Wilt and LeBron are similar in that regard. Many people don't talk about scalable players vs. pigeon holing players. Magic,Bird, Hakeem are scalable. They are going to get there's within the flow. They don't need the ball the whole game to win. Kyrie , Wade, AD, Carmelo could play with magic Bird Hakeem and get 6 chips easily.

For Russel (15, 22, 5 in 13 years), Wilt (30, 23, 3 in 14 years) and Kareem (24, 11, 3 in 20 years) it depends on the context: As far as individual skills go, Wilt is the best all around player among the three, he could do everything, there's footage of him making hookshots 3-pts, he decided to lead the league in assists one season (averaging 24, 24 and 8,6). Kareem had his skyhook, and was just way too long to defend; Bill was great allaround, without scoring impressively (I think he never averaged more than 20ppg; career stats: 15, 22 and 5) On defense it's tight between all three, and I'd say it's a 3-way tie. In a team D, Bill Russell was absolutely unbelievable, as individual defenders all 3 were great, but Kareem and Wilt were taller and longer giving them a bit of an edge. If it comes to rings, Russell blows them out of the water with his 11, no contest. He was the best teamplayer among the 3, always knowing his role and doing whatever was best for the squad and getting Ws. Kareem was the one with the longest career and the most points ever. He's clearly the winner when it comes to longevity (won finals MVP at 38 with Magic and the Lakers). (not like Wilt couldn't play anymore when he retired, he still got offers to play until he was in his 50s :P) When it comes to phisicality, while all three are impressive, I think that Wilt was the best athlete among the 3, and the most athletic NBA player until MJ. Allegedly, on a bet, he plucked quarters from atop the blackboard, which is believable if you see some game footage, on a couple of blocks is arm is almost atop the backboard :P). If you have a chance, check out a video about his athleticism, it's bonkers! So, much like the goat discussion, it comes down to preferences.

Regarding Jerry West: I think he's probably the most underrated great player of all time. He was an all-star every single season of his career, including his injury-shorted final year. He made the all-NBA team every season of his career except his rookie year and that partial final year. Likewise, he made the all-defensive team every season from the year it began (1969) up until his final year. He still ranks 6th all-time in points per game, and 4th all time in playoff points per game, despite being a guard from an era without the 3-point shot. He's the only person ever named Finals MVP from the losing team.

I mean, points and rebounds were noted down, as opposed to blocks, where you DO only have the word of the mouth, so yeah, I believe that. Also, for the assists stat: they were considered only for jumpshots and lay-ups, not like today where it still counts once the receiver dribbles before scoring. As for the 20k women, I dunno. If we assume he was starting to sleep around once he turned 16, and slept with 1 woman a day for 30 years, that's about 10k. He died aged 63, so if we add 15 more years to the total that 15k. IF HE HAD 1 A DAY EACH DAY. So it's likely an exaggeration. However, there is a story about him having installed a traffic light before his bedroom for the ladies to go in and out XD

Thet hing about the 60s is that there wasnt player movement, at all, they didn´t have free agency so when a team got a franchise player in the draft they keep it, Boston drafted 3 franchise players in the same decade and it shows. Imagine if in 2000 if the Suprs with Popovich drafted Duncan, Iversion and TMac paid them a misery and they never let them go. How many championships that team would have got?

Agreed, it depends in how you pad your stats. The issue with Lebron is that that Warriors game was one of the few games where his great numbers actually put the team in a position to win. Throughout this season, he has consistantly had the lowest +/- on his team, has not shot it well, and played significant minutes in garbage time in order to reach his 25ppg average (which he needs in order to catch Kareem within the next season or two). Doing so takes playtime and playing experience away from the younger players on a team, which will be needed if LA is to have any hope of bouncing back. Plus, because of how much he insists on doing on offense, he refuses to play any D (check out just the OT against Houston, where he gave up 3 wide open corner 3s for his man, without even taking a step towards him, but instead just standing in the paint and looking at him); so he basically gives up as many points as he scores by letting his team defend 4 v 5. You don't help your team to get wins (or even get in a position to get wins) by not playing defense, no matter how great you are at the offensive end. For this case, try comparing how the Lakers moved on offense and defense against the Spurs and against Houston (withou/with Lebron). There was more hustle back on D, more and faster ball movement on offense.

Dope video and u have a new subscriber. I love your respect and open mindedness to all eras and explanations for things especially unanswered questions and narratives that have been painted thru history. Bare with me this will probably be a long comment lol but I see few people have true knowledge about the goat status and greatness of this man Wilt Chamberlain The video that’s being reacted to is good but it still got several things wrong. I’ll do my best in addressing them as well as some of the questions the guy had during the video. Yes Wilt could do anything he wanted at any given time and he wasn’t a stat padder. In fact the very idea of stat padding is asinine and doesn’t truly exist. It’s something people make up for a star who has great stats but loses and they magically get quiet when the guy with great stats wins lol. Wilt literally did whatever his team asked and thus was one of the greatest teammates and team players of all time. He did all that scoring cuz his team and coach thought it was best not to mention good for the league in the eyes of the higher ups and wilt was the only one capable of fulfilling all their wishes. Not to mention scoring so much was just naturally part of wilts game and style. When wilt began getting criticized for scoring he literally changed his game at will and lead in assists to show just how skilled he was while helping the team at the same time and getting better with age not to mention all the while learning from his toughest of opponents and incorporating their games into his own Wilt was an actual winner and is ahead of guys like MJ in win shares and defensive win shares in analytic categories despite the creator of these analytics not doing enough research to incorporate a single block or steal into their calculations for Wilts impact on winning and defensive win shares and win shares in general And yes he was the greatest shot blocker of All time and overall defender debatable with Russell as he averaged double digit blocks per game for a career which u can research, as well as never fouled out ever even despite playing aggressive defense with 5 fouls. On top of being able to chase down block like Lebron, defend all time great guards like walt Frazier and Jerry Lucas when need be on switches or not, lock up the paint on ball or shot intimidation or blocking or stealing like no other, and being the greatest rebounder ever and scorer ever. And your right stat padding isn’t a bad thing. Like I said it isn’t even a thing. Stats are simply a reflection of your greatness and style of play combined. And the proof that they aren’t a thing especially when it comes to wilt is the fact that no matter what wilt did when he changed his game and when he won, he was still the most statistically dominant ever in regular season and postseason leading the league in things like assists rebounds and field goal percentage simultaneously while averaging triple doubles and nearly quadruple doubles in season and postseason and multiple series even during championship years. Wilt was also the only player/goat ever to completely change his style and game up at will and on top of that win while doing so and he changed it up TWICE once when going to his second team and the second time going to LA Jerry West being angry is hilarious and idk what show your referring to about him being angry but even he is on record admitting how bad he played during a game in the postseason but how wilt was a savior of the team basically and credits wilt to being the reason for his only chip mainly. Now let’s get into his comp and idea of his era. Wilt Chamberlain never lost when his team outnumbered his competition in hall of famers in postseason series EVER! He also won when outnumbered in hall of famers 8-4, 6-4, 5-3 etc… things guys like Russell himself, lbj and MJ can’t say. Wilt is the one who faced the most hall of fame comp at one time and more often than anyone else in history. Wilts era of the 60s n 70s were as great as any other if not more cuz with lack of teams means lack of opportunity to make the league unless your the best of the best making the fewer spots available. On top of that, the physicality was at its highest and players all across the board were more fundamentally sound and skilled as overall players and defense was also played at its greatest level. Same with ball movement. Not to mention many of the moves of bigs and guards from the 90s-today would be travels and offensive fouls in wilts time forcing them to be more creative and harder to score than any other era And the refs also made 2 sets of rules one for everyone else and the other set for wilt chamberlain calling the game unfairly for him cuz his scoring was getting out of hand and so were the number of regular fouls being committed on him from players having no choice but to foul and same with wilts blocking and over strictness even for that era on everything wilt did When the guy in the video said maybe wilt would be an all time great today not sure unless the shoes are updated and medicine and tech of today are given to him which they obviously would be, still is an uneducated thing to say. Why? Cuz even with Wilts dominance in his era without the tech and medicine he was to this day the strongest, highest jumping, most durable and athletic and stamina having player of all time to this day and one of the fastest. No one to this day with all the advancements comes close to averaging the minutes he averaged in a much slower paced game. Wilt is superior to any player today and any other era. No one at his size is as fast, jumps as high, defends rebounds or scores as well, has a fade and reverse pivot fade as effective as his combined with the 2nd greatest hook ever, ability to go coast to coast and assist or score with speed blitz handle erasing the need for crossovers, a finger roll good as his which was so good that Jordan’s idols Connie and doctor j and Skywalker stole it from wilt, reverse layups off post moves, double clutch scoop and dipping shots and ball fakes like MJ and doc toying with the defense, and a standing jumper and hook shot both extended to deep range before a 3 point line, and a list of clutch moments I have for anyone saying he wasn’t clutch all in the playoffs alone etc…. No one has the combination of skills and weapons wilt has to this day with or without tech n medicine n new shoes lmao. He’s the clear goat

Biggest issue w/Wilt is so few people online actually saw him play live, and the stats are so absurd it's hard to believe. MJ Bird and Magic are similar, but at least there are highlights reels to show you, and full games, even if terrible in quality, to see it; and a lot of people that grew up watching those 3 are actually on social media to talk about them.

Statpadding: When someone starts talking about someone "scoring too much", ask them about Magic padding his Assists or Steals. Did Russell pad his rebounds? Did Hakeem pad his blocks? Why is scoring the only stat that receives NEGATIVE attention, and why is it so arbitrary who gets praised for scoring well and who doesn't?

Stat padding, if it happens within the natural flow of the game does no damage. If you are disrupting the flow of your teams offense to do it, I could see where perhaps that could lead to issues.

Did you hear what they said the league had to do as of making new rules so it would be harder for Wilt to dominate the league? They made it harder for Wilt's style to fit in the league but made it easier for LeBron to play in the league. See LeBron style of playing causing him to commit more offensive fouls and the league knew it, so they call fewer offensive fouls just so he wouldn't foul out throughout the game! It's all about how much money the NBA can make off of a player as long as he didn't look bad by fouling out of the game!

No, stat padding isn't a great idea. If you don't help your teammates they build resentment and lose their sharpness. You aren't going to feel 100% everyday. You need your teammates to pick up the slack. If they feel useless they aren't going to be ready.

Wilt came into the league with a mandate from the coach to be the primary scorer. After about 7 years of averaging 42 ppg, he joined the 76rs, and they had the weapons that Wilt didn't need to be the primary, so he focused on assists, rebounding, and defense, and they won a title. He played the last 7 years of his career like that. He could have averaged 40ppg for his career. He chose not to. If he were in his prime today and playing with today's rules (charging and other offensive titles are ok, traveling is ok, defenders can't hand check, etc., he'd lead the league in scoring, rebounding, and blocked shots. There is no single GOAT; a point guard requires a different skill set than a center or a power forward. As for centers, Wilt was the best. Kareem 2nd and Russell 3rd.

The Boston Celtics was the main reason Wilt didn't win more championships. Just like they were the main reason Jordan didn't win the Eastern Division until after Bird retired. It isn't mentioned often, but he does here. Red Auerbach coached the Celtics, for the whole time, except Russell's last season. The Celtics were a great team, and Red was, arguably, the best coach, ever in the NBA. That is probably the main reason Wilt's teams didn't win but one divisional and one NBA championship, over the Celtics.

Chauncey Billups said about Carmelo when they played together that if Denver won but Melo was under 30 points he'd be pissed off. Then in games they lost if he had his 30 he'd be celebrating after the game while everyone else is dealing with the loss. I think this is why only caring about stats is bad.

Wilt 100% - and that's saying something because Russell is one of the best players of all time. If you look at Wilt's stats though, it's not even a question in my mind. Wilt put up 55 rebounds in one game AGAINST Bill Russell! I mean 55 boards is just an insane feat, and honestly a statistic that will probably never be beaten. I think there's a better chance of someone beating 100 points in a game than there is 55 boards in a game. And he did it against Bill Russell? I mean that's insane. And Bill had 19 boards that game himself, so it's not like he was having an off night. If you dig more into Wilt Chamberlain, I think you'll find that he is by far the greatest basketball player of all time, and probably the single greatest athlete in our recorded history. Personally, MJ is my favorite baller of all time, but Wilt is superhuman. Go watch some videos that talk about how strong he was, that is the most interesting thing about him in my opinion. I think he was a different species, man. Like not even a Homo Sapien lol.

Wilt would get his stats, then he'd check out in the last few minutes of a big game. He didn't want the ball..Look at the last half of the 1969 Finals. Wilt took himself out in the last 7 minutes with a "groin pull" His coach was so angry that he refused to put him back in during the last 2 minutes..Celtic legend Don Nelson Iced the game with a trick shot that the Globetrotters would be scared to take .And Boston did what Boston always did. They won.

There were always witnesses for all of his 🏀records. Nobody doubts his tomcatting but the numbers are disputable. He also didn’t foul out. He did his best to avoid hurting somebody. The problem with Wilt Chamberlain is when people talk about Wilt Chamberlain being the GOAT, they talk about how Bill Russell had better teammates which is why he has more rings than Chamberlain. This is more or less debating the greatest of the 1960s, not of all time. When you hear someone like Lebron mentioned they compare him to Michael Jordan, not Steph Curry or Kevin Durant. That's why you can't really put Wilt in that conversation because he's not even the definitive best player of his era like Jordan or Lebron.

Wilt was so hounded by the press for his scoring he retooled his game after 7 years. Wilt was sensitive to the Russell comparisons that he cut his attempts way down and won the assist title. He won his 2 titles with rebounding and defense like Russell. MJ was called a losing player when he scored all those points early but (unlike Wilt) he didn't give a damn until Phil showed him the formula. If Wilt didn't care and played all 13 years like the first 7 the PPG avg. Record would be 40 ppg. That was Wilts gift to MJ. Also crazy, he never dropped his shoulder ala Shaq despite being even stronger than Shaq. He also shot alot of his shots on fadeaway's 10-20 ft from the basket which eliminates the bigger than everybody else argument.

Get him to the perimeter. But then you go down the other end you gotta stop him 😂😂 he’d be good for 30/15 and 4 blocks today. That’s being very generous to today’s game. He could go for much more. Fans and former players brag about rings, not stats. If you've ever watched Charles Barkley get in an argument with Shaq (Inside The NBA on TNT) or Michael Jordan and Charles is pissing them off, they'll both say something like "That's why you never won anything" or "That's why I've got rings". Sports are played to WIN. Period. They only have parades for CHAMPIONS, not "most assists", etc.

Last but certainly not least, I have to debunk the pace n field goal attempts and athleticism competition narrative arguments against Wilt the Stilt like always. To people saying it wasn’t that many athletes in wilts time and on average the athletes weren’t as good as today my question is how have you challenged this claim and did a study to calculate and prove it like it’s a fact?? Most likely u didn’t and thus come to claim with what your led to believe by what u hear and see etc.. right? Well then let’s do that. In wilts time of the 60s and early 70s u had incredible athletes whom have records to this day like wilt himself, Russell, hondo, and insane other athletes like Bellamy thurmond JUMPIN Johnny green gus Johnson Walter dukes Randy smith etc… the list goes on. Wilt even dominated bigger 7 foot 3 Swede Halbrook who was a 7 foot 3 high bar jumper himself. Guys were so athletic in wilts time that without the tech meds and training today and in chuk Taylor’s there was no need for load management, players coming back better than rose did from career ending injuries and during the summer they would play against the best athletes and skilled ballers that never made the nba that the world has ever seen against legends like Earl Manigault, Joe the destroyer Hammond, and THE HIGHEST JUMPER IN HUMAN HISTORY JUMPIN JACKIE JACKSON not to mention guys like ollie Taylor and helicopter knowings etc… JUMPIN Jackie Jackson was such a great athlete that at 6 foot 4 6 5 in shoes could not only touch but could SWIPE ACROSS THE ENTIRE TOP OF THE BACKBOARD WITH A SINGLE SWIPE AS SEEN BY HUNDREDS OF EYES IN RUCKER PARK SUMMER LEAGUE TIMES OF THE 60s n 70s. And this is the type of competition wilt Earl walt tiny etc… played against every summer to stay in shape rather than playing it safe to not get injured and instead of resting Wilts numbers are not inflated like most people love to believe. Pace and field goal attempts show little to no effect at all especially on all time greats and show inconclusive in trying to justify stats that are so amazing as they don’t hold true for all cases and players and have so many examples of a player who’s numbers were either unaffected or INCREASED while the pace was much slower and field goal attempts were much less. Jerry west and Karl malone are guys whom dominated more in their final old man years jerry west 35 and Karl malone 39, than they did while playing as young physical prime rookies in their early 20s while averaging the same minutes in malone case slightly less by a couple minutes as an old man and in west case slightly more min as an old man. And they are dominating the era as old men more than when they were youngest as the pace is over 10 notches slower and almost 10 less field goal attempts for the entire league. This and many more examples including wilts ability to still dominate in the 70s in rebounds and field goal percentage and blocks leading in all categories despite being an old man who had a career ending injury in the last game of the playoffs in 69 where his coach refused to put him back in the game against wilts and anyone else’s wishes that wilt got blamed for, completely debunks the pace and field goal attempts and inflated numbers argument against wilt and his era. It shows players and especially goats adapt to any era and the pace was actually a feat of difficulty as it takes greatness to get up lots of shots and stamina to be able to last that long in a faster pace game with less resting especially as much as wilt played with no rest and no foul outs and the ball moves faster passing across the court than dribbling as one player especially in one on one hero ball so naturally the game was faster paced with more attempts in the 60s and 70s even just as a result for being more pure as a science in nature than the other eras. The pace was at its slowest in the pre shot clock era and very slow in many of the early 50s which also had as many as 17 teams which also shows us how faster pace, lack of teams, and the 60s can be looked at as a good thing they have over any other era. So yeah no one comes close to touching wilt lol

My understanding for one of the reasons Wilt led the league in assists is because he wanted to give others a chance to shine instead being so dominant. Also, I've heard that he held back at times so that he wouldn't hurt the other players. So if Wilt was playing today, with the high level of athleticism, he might not hold back. So he might be at least as dominant today, because come on, today's players aren't at Wilt-level of skill and athleticism where he was 60 years ago! Do today's players run that fast or have that kind of strength? Maybe some do but only after tons of working out to get there. Wilt was there naturally. Give him the sports science of today and he'd be in his own league.
