@@StamfordBridge The part was originally intended for Gene Hackman. That's who Schwartz wanted but Paramount didn't want to take a risk on because he wasn't known at time. Robert Reed had a development deal with Paramount that really screwed him because he had to appear contractually in whatever they wanted him to. He was a serious dramatic actor and classically trained and Shakespearian actor. He felt the gags in the script were not believable and didn't like constant slapstick because he was told during the pilot that the series would be more true to life and representative of what a divorced family is really like with comedy and drama intertwined. It's not what Reed wanted to be involved in. He loved those kids and showered them with affection because he was estranged from his own teenage daughter.
@jermainelaxuma26215 жыл бұрын
@@g.d.roberts196 Ever wondered how the Brady Bunch would had turned out had Gene Hackman got the part of Mike Brady? It would had been a very different show. Then again I feel that if Gene would not had become the A-List actor that he was known for because he would had been typecast. It's sad that Bob Reed was trapped with the Brady Bunch as I could imagine him doing the roles that Gene Hackman enjoyed like The French Connection. I think that fate wanted Bob to be a part of the Brady Bunch as that provided him the family that he could not have with his own daughter because his ex-wife did not want her to be associated with his gay lifestyle. Bob's true sexuality might had been the real reason to why his ex-wife left him.
@TWS-pd5dc4 жыл бұрын
@@jermainelaxuma2621 Well, Reed had done very heavy drama for 4 seasons on The Defenders with E.G. Marshall from 1961-1965. He wanted The Brady Bunch to have at least some serious issue-related themes, rather than the silly typical sitcom plots and that's what he so often clashed with Schwartz over. One wonders if they had gone into that direction would the show today still be looked back on so fondly? Doubtful, but we'll never know.
@zebrastreet99932 жыл бұрын
@@g.d.roberts196 It seems like perhaps he wanted the show to be more like the kind of show “Eight is Enough” was, which debuted just a few years after the Brady’s original run ended. I think there was only about three years between the two shows. “Eight is Enough” had the comedy and fun, but it also had a more serious and dramatic side to it, perhaps the type of vibe Reed had envisioned.

Florence Henderson became determined when she began to the show to be a real mom and a role model because she grew up in a dysfunctional family.. She actually did love the children in the show as well as her own. She had four of them. She sung year after year, the National Anthem at the Indianapolis 500. She wanted to do something for the United States and act as a role model to help children in general that would see the show. She was highly patriotic. She broke the chain of passing her bad childhood on to her children.

DefiningAwesome you do NOT decide today or tomorrow to become this or that, and that includes the word gay.that is like a black person waking up tomorrow and deciding he wants to be white or chinese or asian. it is in you from the moment of conception to be gay, straight or bi sexual. people are made by nature, or god, that way. YOU come across as a religious type of person.

***** I didn't mean to cause offencer. What I meant was that he may not have discovered he was gay. Just because he had a daughter, doesn't mean that he is bisexual. Sorry that this caused offence.

DefiningAwesome - no offence given or taken.but the man KNEW he was "both ways" from his childhood. at least he would have known it from the time he learned to masturbate. don' t say he didn't!! he knew it all along. i mean, would YOU not know if you were This or That if you got a hard on just thinking of, say, Barak obama? !!!!!!!

+Dassoon Fitz You idiot! back then a lot of gay men got married because it was expected of them. He divorced his wife in 1959. I have had sex with a few girls in my teens and early 20s but I am gay, I have been out for over 30 years, you don't what the hell you're talking about. You know absolutely nothing about sexuality,

Not for a moment do I believe that Florence Henderson didn't know Robert Reed was gay. It's just not realistic to believe that she didn't eventually figure it out. She wasn't that stupid.

She recounts how she figured it out when they were shooting the pilot episode. Said exactly that in this interview. She knew from the very beginning.

If he had lived today he may have had the chance to be happy. We should never make anyone feel like however they are is not good enough. ❤ learn from the past.

Although they were in other shows at the time, I think either Bixby or Hagman would have been a better Mike Brady than Reed did as He looked effeminate in later episodes & didn't appear on the last one when Greg had orange hair...

It's funny, but I bet no lesbian actress ever thinks "Does this scene seem real" when they are with a man.

Robert Reed was playing a part in a sitcom why does it matter if he was gay ? His character wasn't
