That is so incredibly sweet and compassionate. She played the supportive wife that stood behind her husband behind the scenes, and all the while she was standing by her TV partner behind the scenes to help him contend with this difficult personal dichotomy and she kept it a secret. My hat is off to her.

Robert Reed was also tense on the Brady Bunch set because he often felt the show insulted the intelligence of the viewer with its scripts and that he was too good an actor to be stuck playing on it.

@@StamfordBridge The part was originally intended for Gene Hackman. That's who Schwartz wanted but Paramount didn't want to take a risk on because he wasn't known at time. Robert Reed had a development deal with Paramount that really screwed him because he had to appear contractually in whatever they wanted him to. He was a serious dramatic actor and classically trained and Shakespearian actor. He felt the gags in the script were not believable and didn't like constant slapstick because he was told during the pilot that the series would be more true to life and representative of what a divorced family is really like with comedy and drama intertwined. It's not what Reed wanted to be involved in. He loved those kids and showered them with affection because he was estranged from his own teenage daughter.

@@g.d.roberts196 Ever wondered how the Brady Bunch would had turned out had Gene Hackman got the part of Mike Brady? It would had been a very different show. Then again I feel that if Gene would not had become the A-List actor that he was known for because he would had been typecast. It's sad that Bob Reed was trapped with the Brady Bunch as I could imagine him doing the roles that Gene Hackman enjoyed like The French Connection. I think that fate wanted Bob to be a part of the Brady Bunch as that provided him the family that he could not have with his own daughter because his ex-wife did not want her to be associated with his gay lifestyle. Bob's true sexuality might had been the real reason to why his ex-wife left him.

@@jermainelaxuma2621 Well, Reed had done very heavy drama for 4 seasons on The Defenders with E.G. Marshall from 1961-1965. He wanted The Brady Bunch to have at least some serious issue-related themes, rather than the silly typical sitcom plots and that's what he so often clashed with Schwartz over. One wonders if they had gone into that direction would the show today still be looked back on so fondly? Doubtful, but we'll never know.

@@g.d.roberts196 It seems like perhaps he wanted the show to be more like the kind of show “Eight is Enough” was, which debuted just a few years after the Brady’s original run ended. I think there was only about three years between the two shows. “Eight is Enough” had the comedy and fun, but it also had a more serious and dramatic side to it, perhaps the type of vibe Reed had envisioned.

Florence Henderson became determined when she began to the show to be a real mom and a role model because she grew up in a dysfunctional family.. She actually did love the children in the show as well as her own. She had four of them. She sung year after year, the National Anthem at the Indianapolis 500. She wanted to do something for the United States and act as a role model to help children in general that would see the show. She was highly patriotic. She broke the chain of passing her bad childhood on to her children.

Kevin Healey-- Your mention of her singing at the Indy 500, brought back a story my husband, Ken, had told me long ago. Ken attended the 500 every year, and once found himself in the same hotel elevator as Ms. Henderson. Ken complimented her on her singing, and she gave him a kiss on the cheek. For years after that, everytime she appeared on TV, I had to hear about him and his "girlfriend" making out in the elevator! 😁 Ken and Florence Henderson have since both passed away, but they better be behaving themselves together in Heaven!

Robert Reed did not die from AIDS He suffered, and succumbed from colon cancer possibly complicated from being HIV+. Also, the actor was previously married, to Marilyn Rosenberger; they had a daughter Karen Rietz before divorcing. So, I don’t buy the fact that Florence Henderson picked up that Robert was gay because her TV husband “was very nervous about looking good in that love scene” (on The Brady Bunch pilot).

I’d have to agree. Mike had a sort of “take no bullshit” attitude and was often suspicious of what the kids were up to, in most cases the boys because he knew they weren’t angels and they frequently were up to something and/or being jerks to the girls. He also managed to make the “pissy” attitude charming and funny.

The Brady bunch was from a different era and today he probably would not have to worry about his career being damaged for being openly gay. As funny as it sounds, there are some gay people who think they’re freaks, and reed tried to “cure” himself by marrying a woman, but it just didn’t work out that way. That's weird, she said recently that "all the kids knew he was gay"....so which is it? Everyone knew or only she did? I guess it doesn't matter. It's sad that he was conflicted.

Odd, because Ive read it was well known in the industry he was Gay before the show started. He was in quite a few Shakespeatean plays, and it wass known to his colleagues.

So you were born 12 years after Reed died. That makes me feel 100 years old. But one day, in maybe 50 years, you'll be talking about Justin Bieber and people will think you're talking about Franz Liszt or something. Old age will get every one of us, if we live that long.

First of all, so-called "Robert Reed" wasn't even his real birth name? I think it's a disgrace and shows complete disrespect of one's heritage to change their birth name, unless when a woman gets married. If a woman gets married and DOESN'T change her last name, that shows no respect to her husband. There was absolutely nothing wrong with the name "John Robert Rietz Jr"?! The change was probably made as the result of a greedy Business Manager, with respect to perceived anticipation of greater recognition and subsequent monetary gain?!

DefiningAwesome you do NOT decide today or tomorrow to become this or that, and that includes the word gay.that is like a black person waking up tomorrow and deciding he wants to be white or chinese or asian. it is in you from the moment of conception to be gay, straight or bi sexual. people are made by nature, or god, that way. YOU come across as a religious type of person.

***** I didn't mean to cause offencer. What I meant was that he may not have discovered he was gay. Just because he had a daughter, doesn't mean that he is bisexual. Sorry that this caused offence.

DefiningAwesome - no offence given or taken.but the man KNEW he was "both ways" from his childhood. at least he would have known it from the time he learned to masturbate. don' t say he didn't!! he knew it all along. i mean, would YOU not know if you were This or That if you got a hard on just thinking of, say, Barak obama? !!!!!!!

I have had sex with a few girls in my teens and early 20s but I am gay, I have been out for over 30 years, you don't what the hell you're talking about. You know absolutely nothing about sexuality,

Although they were in other shows at the time, I think either Bixby or Hagman would have been a better Mike Brady than Reed did as He looked effeminate in later episodes & didn't appear on the last one when Greg had orange hair...
