The pick angle alone is such a game changer!
@ericruddphotography2 жыл бұрын
@@EricHaugenGuitar glad you brought that up. Can you clarify something? You talk of tilting the pick back (or pointing the tip toward the neck) to play a bit on the side when strumming. Are you simply extending you index finger and thumb and dropping the wrist slightly, or do you actually rotate the pick a little, say, with your middle finger, to expose that side more? Thanks in advance.

Oh, yes, Jimi Hendrix was a rhythm guitarist first. And he came from soul/funk. And was incredibly relaxed in his playing. Can‘t touch that. You are doing a great job teaching it, Eric!

I think these techniques give pure tone and cultivate certain overtones, and allow for a lot of feel. There is a certain precision in allowing this loose organic feel to bloom. It's both clean and messy at the same time. Great voicings for the chords. That little Hiwatt can be sparkly, gritty and fulsome. Just a Jewish guy from New Jersey... Line of the day!

Thanks! 1 question: when you 'drop' your pick angled, I understand how you do it on the downstrum. On the upstrums, do you 'angle' your pick the other way around, so it scrapes the strings easily again?

Since Hendrix was the only guitar player in The Jimi Hendrix Experience, he had to play rhythm and lead at the same time, and he became amazingly good at it. I had always thought that you needed to have Hendrix-sized hands to do all that masterful muting and especially the thumb-over-the-neck thing. But I notice your hands are not huge, and still you're doing those same things amazingly well! I find Hendrix's rhythm playing even more challenging than his solos (e.g. "Hey Joe"). He really exceled at that, and you excel at showing us these tricky techniques and pointing out interesting guitar parts. Thanks for another great lesson!!

I have a tendency to play with a pretty heavy hand, and I've found that practicing while watching TV helps me lighten up on my picking. I play more quietly mainly so that I can hear the TV better, but the softer touch gives me sweeter tone, more sustain, and better dynamic control.
