Hey, Goodies! Back with another dyeing video. This time, my mother and I attempted to cover her greys using all natural products: henna and indigo. We tried the process twice, learned from our mistakes the first time around and managed to make process that was effective. Please watch this short tutorial on how we went about prepping and applying the natural dyeing agents! Hope this is as informative for you as it was for us. :)

DISCLAIMER: As always, I only recommend doing this on mature/loced hair! I'm not a consultant. Please consultant your consultant prior to dyeing if you are unsure if your locs are loced enoough to attempt this. Better to be safe than sorry. Wouldn't want your beautiful locs unraveling because they aren't mature enough :)

Question, what do you consider mature loc'd? Past 12 months? I am currently 14 months.

I have been using henna all my life, I love henna but that's a lot of henna for only one use, I would use that much henna in a span of a year, 10 grams is enough for one use. If you are on a budget and trying to save some coins I would suggest to only take 1 tablespoon of henna, mix with your favourite oil (heat it up) a little to release the dye and mix with your favourite conditioner and apply on the hair, leave in for 30 minutes to an hour and rinse it off, the dye will stick trust me, I use henna in my conditioner once every month, you can even use it weeekly and a little goes a long way.

Hi! Thanks so much for the advice. I initially thought it was a ton of henna as well, but didn’t workout when we tried diluted versions over the course of a few months. I will say we decided to use this much for a few reasons after a failed first attempt. For context, this video is us doing the process a second time after waiting 4 months in between of using less henna and a diluted regimen during that time frame. The first being, it was the suggested amount on the package for the length of my mother’s hair. Also, it was the first time we ever did it on her demi-permanent treated hair of four years. When we used half of one packet the first time, it didn’t stick at all even after leaving it in for the recommended amount of time. Our goal was to achieve a black color and grey coverage in one sitting and not gradually. On her hair this was only possible with substantial staining of a base of henna treated hair. Without this much henna on the initial try, there was no staining of the grey hairs which ultimately didn’t allow for the indigo to stick and achieve the black color and coverage we desired. So our second time around which is what you’re seeing, we decided to use the suggested amounts on the package that correlated with the length of the hair. I have no idea if her having color treated hair or locs affected the process. However, for maintaining the color we plan on doing a diluted process similar to the one you detailed above to keep the color! :) Not meant to be defensive; only pointing this out based on our experience after failed attempts!

@@ImaniGoodridge Yes that is true,your experience was different from mine, I think the type of henna used may have also play a role on how strong it is, My method has always worked for me to cover the little grays I have. Seeing as I use Henna regularly I guess I panicked a little seeing how much was spent on one session lol 😂, Thanks 4 sharing your experience with us! 💕

@@luckygirl20000 What brand of henna do you use? I want to start back using it but the shop I used to get it from no longer carries it. It was a simple 3 hour process and got all the grays. Some of these processes are way too long. I just don’t have this type of time.

Omg I’m about to go home and henna my hair I’m so glad I saw this first! I’ve never henna’d locs only loose hair so I was nervous about the henna not rinsing out but you didn’t have issues so I’m going for it 😂

We were nervous too! But after doing this twice, the henna and indigo wash out of your locs just fine. Definitely let me know how it goes if you try it! As always, I recommend doing any moisture-inducing action (i.e. dyeing your hair) when hair is loced. If you have any concerns, consult with your loctician prior to dyeing :)

I used Henna also and my grays turned the exact same color good thing I came across your video…I don’t mined the color just want it all black… I started using water at first along with some oils but will definitely try coffee this time and let it sit for 10-12 hours for the color to turn black before I apply it to my hair. The golden streak are fine until my next retie can’t wait to be back all black…Thanks for sharing😊

Thanks so much for sharing. Did the indigo make her locs dry?
@ImaniGoodridge
@ImaniGoodridge 3 жыл бұрын
Surprisingly, no. However, that is probably due to her deep conditioning her hair as well as moisturizing it lightly with oil 😊 This prevents the dryness and potential breakage. DISCLAIMER: She can deep condition bi-annually (and when needed after dye) because she has fully loced, mature sisterlocks (13 years) that won’t unravel with added moisture. If you have newer locs that have yet to loc and settle, I don’t recommend deep conditioning 😊

What is the difference between henna and semi permanent hair dye on sisterlocks? Which is more damaging to the sisterlocks and witch would you recommend if any
@ImaniGoodridge
@ImaniGoodridge 2 жыл бұрын
Henna is a plant & semi permanent hair dye has chemicals. Henna is a natural alternative to dyeing hair because it’s less damaging.

Yes, we did it to cover the greys which were only at her roots. If you wanted all of you all of your hair to be more black, then I'd apply indigo through all of the hair as well!
