Interesting to see. There is a lot of radio com and manual tasks for the dispatcher involved. Here In Europe, stuff is more automated. We'll get all needed infos send to our pager and an alarm app on our smartphone. The app doubles as a GPS taking the address over to either Google or Apple Maps depending on your device. Status updates like which vehicle is en route or has now arrived is done via status button on the radio and automatically visible on the dispatchers computer.
@BloodStainedTear Жыл бұрын
depending on where you are in the US some of our dispatch systems are automated but still need to be manned by a live dispatchers some dispatch centers are tied right in with the police computers in the cars so the cops assigned to a particular call can see and hear everything the dispatcher is seeing and hearing and at least in my state all of the the police and fire services can tie into each others radio frequencies for mutual aid purposes that was all brought about after 9/11 because there was no intercommunication with the various services

Good video but why was only one engine dispatched to smoke in a garage? When we are dispatched in St. Louis county for a call like that it’s a first alarm. Now the first due engine has his hands full until the other companies arrive. As chief Dick of the Black Jack fire district use to say “better to have them in route and not need them than to need them and not have them”.

The only thing would say is the original call gave me enough information where I would have paged this out as a structure fire. Once there was a confirmed structure fire it would be upgraded to a working fire/all hands.
@legohead6 Жыл бұрын
since this is a dramatization I imagine this was done on purpose to show a call being upgraded and give a bit more content. In the real world there are many factors that would be taken into account to determine the initial call type.

Awesome to see. In Vance County NC we run three houses (county and 2 closest vollie depts which now are all combos) to any residential alarms. Smoke pumping out a house would be initially dispatched as a structure fire, with confirmation resulting in instant fire attack by first due with full assignment dispatch for all hands (county rescue, EMS, LEO). Great video, thank you for showing us how each great community does it! :)

Nice to see how fires are paged out! They make it look so easy! Realize this is a dramatization, in my center, it is a one person operation at night, 2 during the day. If I page out a fire, I am trying to do it while trying to answer a dozen or more 911 calls about it, or maybe one of them is an unrelated ambulance call, while calling utility companies, notifying LE for traffic or immediate rescue if they are first on scene. I can imagine Hennepin County SO has multiple dispatchers on all of the time, considering there are over 1.2 million people in the county. I can't imagine the mayhem that ensues on a busy day if they handle all of the 911 calls for EMS, Fire, and LE.

While the facts presented here are accurate, the amount of chaos missed is notable. Nobody calls 911 with a calm voice. Responders are rushing to get on the rig, with sirens, traffic, multiple lines of radio traffic and driving through traffic all being considered real-time. This is factual but missing some realism.

What does and alarm mean
@sturmovik12749 ай бұрын
I know this is late, but in this context "alarm" can mean two things. 1: The initial call from the dispatcher to the fire personnel may use the phrase "alarm of fire"; this only means that something is on fire. This is older phrasing, but some agencies may still use it. 2: "Alarms" as measured by the fire crews. This is a measurement of how many firefighters and engines/trucks/etc are required for the particular fire. The "first alarm" will be dispatched with the first report of a building fire; this might consist of a chief, 3-5 fire engines, 1-2 fire trucks and an ambulance. If the chief decides that they need reinforcements, they'll ask dispatch for a "second alarm". This will call several more engines and trucks from a wider area. So on and so forth up to the fifth or sixth alarm, which is the largest that most areas have pre-existing plans for; any fires larger than that will require improvisation.

Do we also call 911 when fire alarm is on
@sturmovik12749 ай бұрын
Yes, you can and should. In many large buildings (apartments, etc), the fire department will automatically be called if the fire alarm goes off. If not, and you can't figure out why your fire alarm/smoke detector is going off, call 911.
@epicrailfanproductions13 күн бұрын
So when the fire alarm/waterflow goes off in public places, it automatically sends it to the 911 dispatch’s computer and the dispatch will put out a page tone to the fire alarm location of the building in which fire trucks they send out. (if you need to test the fire alarm each month or year, contact your local fire department first before you proceed to do so) you can also call 911 manually if the fire alarms aren’t working properly during a fire.

How are the fire department dispatched in the event that there is no cell service
@legohead6 Жыл бұрын
Someone needs to call 911 to initiate a response. A few other ways a call could come in indirectly would be a patrol officer to spot something and radio it in. Or many truckers have VHF/CB radios and they could broadcast for someone else who does have service to call 911.

Interesting. I feel that the initial call needs to start the police asap and the dispatcher get to the point of the call sooner vs taking down name phone number, etc.. Get the address, put caller on hold and get responders going in that direction. Then she can get additional information. Seconds count as was a real case with my neighbor this summer.
@sirlythan Жыл бұрын
Name and phone number are more crucial. In the event the call gets cut, the dispatcher immediately has the correct name and number to call back. It happens frequently with cell phones in bad areas, and 911 WILL call back if a line is cut. This is also a priority due to domestic calls, because the call can be cut very quickly by the abuser. If there's no response to a call back, 911 procedures across the country are to immediately dispatch police to the location associated with the phone number or ping.

I highly encourage your department to immediately dispatch the fire department well your dispatcher still on the phone with the reporting party!!! Every second counts!!! This is coming from a fire captain in the big city department!!! I noticed from your department video that the reporting party calls 911. Your dispatcher answers the phone THE caller states there’s smoke coming out of a garage attached to a home immediately my recommendation would be dispatch the fire department, well still on the phone with the reporting party. Every second counts these fires are burning faster, hotter!!! it takes us at a minimum 90 seconds to put all of our protective equipment on that’s not including leaving the station that’s not including the traffic we encounter in route to a structure fire!!! It needs to be dispatched in lightspeed well, you still have the reporting party on the line. Another dispatcher is already assigning the fire department respected resources to the incident!!! Your team is doing an amazing job!!! Thank you!!!
