Thank God for these dispatchers. They do a thankless job and the public does not have ANY idea how stressful their job is. They get the calls before the police officers do.

It's a great job done it for 30 years only bad thing about it is that we don't get closure like he said the child was drowning mother was hysterical but once field units arrive, that's it for us. I think we should get closure let us know what happened after the paramedics and police arrived. Also, the paramedics and police officers get the glory we are not even mentioned even though we talked with the victim for 5 or 10 minutes in a stressful situation, we become non-existent.

Idk about your department but working for a city we do get closure. We have the case number assigned to the event and we can always lookup the report.

Well, thank you for your service as a 911 dispatcher, although you're retired I have a lot of respect for what you did. My mom was very sick with auto immune hepatitis and every week I had to call 911 for help. One time her blood sugar was 34 and had hepatic encephalopathy from her ammonia levels being high and was non responsive. I called and this angel took me step by step trying to listening to my mom's breathing pattern. She was so calming and just appreciated the EMT's, fire department, nurses, doctors, and hospital staff. I just cannot put it into words but y'all are the unrecognized heroes that deserve so much more recognition. I hope you're enjoying your retirement and may God bless you all

Wow. This was overwhelming just reading, that saddens me! That’s how it is in the medical field MA LPN Nurses get over looked and the doctors get all the credit. No matter what God gets all the glory.

I’m looking to move to Broward county from Palm beach to become a dispatcher, I saw something on the news a couple weeks ago that broke my heart. I guess they have a shortage of 911 dispatcher’s so no one answered in time. A bunch of calls going on answered from what I have heard. I know it doesn’t pay much but I am a single man approaching his mid-30s I feel like that would give my life more purpose.

Not going to lie, I work at a call center with distress caller worrying about where they going to sleep for the night or where to get help and it's not even an emergency call center and I'm already stressed already. I'm very greatful that there's people willing to do these type of job because it's mentally stressful. All suicidal hotline, dispatch are a saint.

Some 911 dispatchers then I want to help other people when they are injured or sick it is not right what they are doing to us to the citizens because one day it might happen to them but always remember this is that when we needed help Chicago 911 dispatchers wilber memories days when they need help when there's nobody around to help them but I really think they should understand that when a person is injured or sick they need help that is my point to them that all 911 should help people who are injured or sick dispatchers

We definitely have an often thankless job, so it’s nice to see all the positive comments here. Many people do assume we are simply office admin staff who push a magic button that sends police and firefighters to an automatically provided address with your full name, accurate telephone number and personal history. I can’t speak for everywhere, but where I’m from, dispatchers are certified in emergency medical dispatch (EMD) and receive both classroom and hands on training for not just basic first aid but CPR and AED, field triage and trauma care (stopping the bleeding and plugging bullet holes, apply the tourniquet etc) We attend the law enforcement academy and become state certified in law enforcement dispatch and crisis management to not just learn police protocols but the psychological side of law enforcement; talking down suicidal subjects, guiding victims out of danger when the burglar is in their house, coaxing details and even confessions out of murderers calling in their own deeds (getting them to surrender without trying to kill the police or themselves first is a big one). We hear people die, we hear mothers cry for their lost children, we sit front row to incidents before someone is there to stop it. Sometimes, truly awful things can be happening on the other end of that line, and no matter how horrible or disgusting it is, we cannot hang up because someone has to record what’s happening so justice can have a chance to take it’s due. We handle the radio and manage the response teams for rescue, fire and police while simultaneously handling phone calls. 911 and non emergency lines interchangeably. I have gotten a call with a woman frantically begging for us to save her child who isn’t breathing, spent 15 minutes guiding her through CPR to keep that kid as stable as possible while the medics came from across town due to the meds closest to them being busy on another emergency and after that was done and the child was going to the hospital, moments later I got a admin call about a barking dog. It is a game of roulette when you answer the phone here, and it’s our honor to take the call. It may be hard to appreciate the less emergent calls off the tail of a massive emergency but all in all we are here to resolve problems in the community. We are the ones who initiate that process and make the first decision on what resources your problem needs assigned to it to be resolved, and sometimes you need help faster than the police and medics can drive and that’s why we have the training we do. You become an extension of us and we guide your hands to do what needs to be done when you’re overwhelmed and afraid. Stay safe everyone.

Someone said that it’s a very stressful job. I didn’t get that job cause I’m not that fast and that patient, I was glad I didn’t get that job.

I recognized the main stress in dispatching was the inability to detach from the adrenaline. Those on the street can release their energy but the dispatcher is on another new incident. There was no pause between calls. Last agency I worked we had over 900k I recognized the main stress in dispatching was the inability to detach from the adrenaline.
