Henry Cavill's Superman Will Never Return

I made a video after Black Adam talking about the future of that character and his relationship to both Shazam and Superman going forward. I expressed my excitement for James Gunn to take over along with producer Peter Saffran. Together I thought that they could shepherd the DC universe to a bright future with lots of rich stories to tell.
I still do believe that. James Gunn is a great filmmaker with a keen eye for what makes even the most broken people tick, and he pours all of those imperfections and flaws into his writing in a way that makes even his goofiest characters feel like real tangible people.
I have no doubt that his DC stories will continue to have that same level of pathos and humanity. But I must say, I am really truly shocked that he thinks recasting Superman is a good idea.
Henry Cavill’s status as Superman has been up in the air for the better part of 5 years now. Following the hatchet job that was the original Justice League, Cavill’s Supes made a bunch of faceless cameos that blurred the line but still clearly represented the Man of Steel iteration...

Even though we all wanted him back, the universe was a mess in every way. So while I am pretty bummed out how the old Warner Bros treated Henry Cavil, it was needed in order to have fresh start and let the general audience know they have learned their mistakes. Even it meant losing the things we loved from that universe, if it meant getting the stories that fans wanted to be told, it is a good enough reason to do it. Lastly, we're in the age of multiverses for superhero movies. So give it some time and they'll eventually pull an Andrew Garfield and give these characters the faithful adaptation they deserve while also giving the newer generation inspiration and hope.

It’s what was needed for Gunn’s vision but Imo we should’ve gotten recast for some characters (flash,Batfleck) and some should stay (Gadot, Mamoa) I’d rather a soft reboot with slight changes and reinventions following the ideas from flashpoint and the new 52 But it’s either a soft reboot or a total reboot and Gunn’s making one of those necessary decisions and not dancing around the idea But Mamoa as Lobo and other actors recasted is weird to me and I’m not a fan

It's an interesting paradigm. On the one hand, he has been in about five movies, so he is probably the longest serving movie Superman both in terms of years and number of movies. That said, only one of the movies really focused on him. In my opinion it probably should have given him a second solo film to flesh out the character.

While I am sad Cavil is gone and potentially the rest of the cast are too I am optimistic for DC. Ever since BvS they’ve been jumping and floundering and the universe to me feels all over the place. A fresh start with no strings attached, no existing lore to abide by and no existing drama within WB/Hollywood/actors etc allows for some much needed air. A chance to get things right this time.

I think there’s just too much drama with all the actors and directors, as well as too much aimless but still connected media. I agree that it could potentially still work, but Henry Cavill, The Rock, Patty Jenkins, Jared Leto, Ezra Miller, Ben Affleck, Ray Fisher, and Zack Snyder all have their own set of issues attached to them. I think keeping some of the characters and not others makes no sense, but I’m cool with recasting a bunch of these actors. If Mamoa and Cena suddenly show up as Lobo and Shazam, I’m completely down for that. But I get the blank slate reboot, I think the DCEU is too damaged to save.

Correction: Gunn didn’t say “not everyone will be recast”, people were saying Gunn would recata everyone except for HIS Suicide Squad, basically saying he would fire everyone except his friends, Gunn clarified but not really by saying that “not everyone except for the Suicide squad will be recast” which can mean that either everyone goes or some characters outside of TSS would stay with the same actors too, I’m more inclined towards the former

I mean, trying to continue to forge ahead with the already bad DCEU is like trying to build a house of a bad foundation. You need a good foundation to have a good overall structure. It doesn’t take much, just a solid, cohesive foundation to build on. While yes the two newer seasons aren’t that great compared to the earlier ones, they still have their moments. As a major DC fan, I appreciate a DC universe where these characters just exist because not everything needs to be an origin story. Events happen outside of the show that aren’t always shown. To me that makes it feel like a real world because not everything needs to be explained or seen, sometimes characters just exist or make a small cameo because they are a character that exists in this universe but aren’t integral to this story. I will say, they show can become over saturated with characters that then suffer from loss of character development. Last season Halo was a huge part but she’s hardly in the most recent season. Batman’s secondary team gets shown briefly at the beginning of a season and then those characters feature episodes and episodes later. After all that time waiting for their appearance in an episode, they hardly get any time or character development. Then in season 3 some of the original cast miss out on a lot of screen time. So yes, there are certainly issues with the show (especially) later seasons, I often find it enjoyable and can appreciate the addition/cameos of lesser known DC characters. It is a show that I would like to see end earlier rather than later before it becomes trash tier.

Gunn did the right thing. Foundational films were fundamentally broken and you can’t keep building on bad foundations. I fully understand why Cavill is gone and can feel bad for him at the same time. For better or worse (better IMHO but that obviously remains to be seen), Gunn wants to reboot the whole DCU and I can't say I blame him. Most of the movies have underperformed and been mediocre with a few bright spots. Snyder's tone and characterization of Supes and Batman was a mistake and, unfortunately, formed a rocky foundation to build everything else on. Cavill could've been the best Supes but was given garbage material to work with. He truly did his best with what he had to work with. It's disappointing that we won't see his best version of the character but if he doesn't fit in future DCU plans, so be it. He's a class act and will have plenty of opportunities to please fans of other big IPs/franchises. Would love to see him as Bond or Captain Britain personally. Don't know much about Warhammer but I know he loves it so we know he'll put his time and passion into making a good product true to the mythology.

I don't know, I liked Snyder's style and vision. Superman finally looked like a real person with his cockroaches in his head instead of a caricature Boy Scout. Batman was a former fighter who, after losing Robin, broke down and lost faith in goodness and mercy, but gradually began to return them. Wonder Woman was a noble warrior without the pretentious feminism and Mary Sue traits of Captain Marvel or Rey from Star Wars. The rest were also cool, and the ideas of the confrontation between Batman and Deathstroke and the struggle for Superman's soul with Darkseid were mega-epic. And I'm not sure about Gunn, because he's one of those directors who can make stable blockbusters only if he's controlled by an experienced manager like Kevin Feige, and Warners put James as just such a manager, and that's troubling.

I really did give the DCEU an honest chance and I didn't like it. Based on the revenue and profits, I also think it's fair to say the general movie audience didn't like it either. It's an unfortunate reality for Snyderverse fans. I don't know what Gunn has planned but I hope that everyone is able to keep an open mind about it.

In a sense, a Henry Cavill never got a chance to play Superman at all, just whatever overly dramatic edgelord always on the brink of the Injustice storyline Zack Snyder thinks Superman is. I would have loved to see him play the incorruptible personification of hope, joy and optimism that Cavill clearly always wanted to play too and did his best to work into the scripts handed to him but there’s only so much he could have done with what he was given. And while I don’t doubt whatever Gunn will come up with in the long term will be passable at worst, I can’t help but know I’m always going to wonder what he could have done with Henry in the starring role he always dreamed of instead. But because of Zack’s handling these characters in all the worst possible ways, we’re never going to know what that looks like when we so easily could have done if another director was given control all the way back when MOS was greenlit. And that, more than anything, is the bitterest pill to swallow.

Hopefully they start small with that one and not wing it because Warhammer is more like Dune and Starship Troopers (which ironically it takes influence from both) than Star Wars, they can'g just wing it as they have to explain a ton of Lore and Factions. Perhaps start small with Inquisitorial Stories of Intriuge or Horror Sci fi films or a small personal group of Astartes in a smaller part of a planetary conflict.

Henry Cavill will always be my Superman. No disrespect to the legendary, Christopher Reeve. I could never get behind or like the character of Superman in the past, I always found the character cheesy and bland. There was nothing interesting to me about him. However, Henry Cavill and Zack Snyder did the impossible for me when I watched Man of Steel for the first time back in 2019. They got me to like actually like Superman. Well, Henry's version at least. The movie is a masterpiece and the Superman movie I have waited for for years. It was literally the beginning of Kal's journey into becoming Superman with humanity immediately accepting him. It didn’t happen automatically like it did in Reeve’s films I go to spend time with Superman, know his thought process a little and his feelings as he struggles with his place on our World, until he was forced to make a choice during Zod’s invasion. Then even after that and thanks to Lex Luthor’s brilliant masterplan, humanity rejected and despised Superman making him doubt himself again going back to square one after originally thinking he found his purpose. Yet, he earned his respect when he sacrificed himself to kill Doomsday. Then he cameback in Snyder’s Justice League with the beautiful black suit and it was great to see him no longer doubting himself. If people weren’t such crybabies we would have gotten a complete arc of Snyder’s 5 movies where it ends with Henry’s Superman becoming the Superman we know in the comics Thank you Henry for making a fan of your Superman and overall understand the character in general a little more. You deserved so much better than what you were given

While that might work for the lighter marvel tone, it is not a good fit for the dc's darker tone. he is the wrong choice for a a serious, hope filled superman or a brooding, gritty batman. Here's an idea: What if we're being misled into thinking that the DCEU Justice League are gone? Here's an alternative scenario: the major DCEU actors are being shelved in the meantime only to return for Crisis on infinite earths. Cavill Returns as Earth-2 Superman/Kal-L alongside the DCU Superman.

When you recast Superman, who was admittedly done dirty, you are still taking away a main pillar if not the main pillar of the universe. Man of Steel is the first movie in that universe, and if you're rebranding and trying to make things work, you don't just get rid of Henry Cavill, you get rid of everyone and switch up the roles for anyone returning, or you only recast when absolutely necessary. I feel bad for him because he just wants to be a nerd that gives us fellow nerds things to be nerds about, but people either don't respect the source material or undervalue what he has to bring. As for the stuff with The Batman. If Matt Reeves and Robert Pattinson weren't being so stubborn about it, they could have started a whole new DCU with new actors playing all the other superheroes. Nolan's Dark Knight Trilogy is the most realistic of the Batman movies, while Reeves' The Batman is the most grounded in reality, yet it actually feels like anything can happen because you start to shift back over into fantasy with hyperreality. It may not be confirmed, but that definitely feels like he shot up some Venom to kick in the adrenaline and pummel that guy in the finale. Give me Man-Bat, give me Clayface, give me Poison Ivy, let loose and have some fun because even if the world feels grounded in reality, it definitely felt like you could have some of the more fantastical stuff Batman has to face. Both Reeves and Pattinson have said they don't want to get involved with a whole franchise deal crossing over with everything, but they're literally doing just that by making multiple projects related to The Batman including a Penguin show and a sequel movie. That's the definition of a franchise! This isn't like Marvel where movie rights were split up amongst a number of studios, you have all of DC at your fingertips to play with, Batman can have people he begrudgingly calls friends even though he actually means it, and a world that includes more than just Gotham. The DCEU may have been a mess, but Reeves and Pattinson in addition to James Gunn and Peter Safran could have made things right by pulling together and just rebooting the whole thing to make it easier on everyone for where to start, what to watch, who's doing what, and then maybe you start pulling some multiverse shenanigans for the nostalgic fans and giving everyone their swan song finales. Or you decide to make one last movie for the DCEU's Justice League to end that universe with a Crisis that actually reboots it. It's been 10 years, you might as well just end it and start over with how sloppy it's been than picking and choosing who stays and who goes. Lot's of peaks, lots of valleys, but it's consistently inconsistent. Even if their highs can be better than Marvel's, you need something a bit more dependable like Marvel has been able to do for a shared universe to work, or at least fully commit to the decisions made. I'm still going to be patient and wait to see what's done, but it would seriously just be easier to either keep everyone around including Cavill and forge ahead, or drop them all and start completely fresh.

Everything you said towards the end of your video regarding Henry Cavill's Superman, Zack Snyder, etc. We don't need James Gunn's new "clean" slate. Keeping a lot of the DC characters that were working, i.e. Jason Mamoa's Aquaman, Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman, Zachary Levi's Shazam, and Cavill's Superman, is really the way to go. This is an EXTREMELY terrible and risky move for DC, allowing Gunn & Safran to get rid of mostly everybody. I also agreed with the part where you said to bring back Cyborg and give him the reigns to the Titans, that's a great angle. DC should be a lot more fair with Cavill, and you're absolutely right, also allow Zack Snyder to do whatever he wants as well. That would push the DCU forward, not Gunn's re imagining. Gunn & Safran were given WAY TOO much power and creative control over DC, they need to taken down a few pegs before they single handedly ruin the DCU. They will fail, with this so called blank slate of theirs, it will destroy DC as we know it, and they will completely fail the fans. The should've left what was working alone. If it ain't broke, why fix it? Jason Mamoa can be excited to play Lobo, but they would need to reboot Aquaman for that to happen, because as it stands, he is Aquaman. I’ve been a fan of a lot of DC content in the past decade, but the problem isn’t with people like me or even people that love the DCEU, it’s the general audiences. The amount of hype/talk when even a Marvel Disney+ show is coming out versus a new DC property just for the average casual moviegoer/streamer is a major gap, and I think by starting anew they hope to one day be on the higher end of that advantage. It’s hard to get mainstream obsession with a franchise without a strong base, and although DC certainly improved its output since 2013 I think they screwed up so hard when the hype was at its highest that even if they could course-correct into success, it would never compare to Marvel’s, and that’s something the execs couldn’t live with (but I don’t entirely blame them honestly).

Hopefully he will be able to get another role with dc. He’s a good actor and especially after what’s happened to him and his return it must be pretty awful for him. I think a lot of your hopes for a continuation of the DCEU proves in my mind why the slate needs to be set clean. It's so convoluted. Black Adam reestablished Superman and used returners like Viola Davis in ways they never would have been in previous films. In what world has Amanda Waller ever had a pager for Superman? Honestly, I was never a big fan of Superman in general. I'm not heart broken at all by Cavill's recasting. I am heartbroken that they're not recasting the entire DCU. I want them ALL gone. Recasting and rebooting are different things... He might keep sazam family , gal or anyone else, but the universe would be rebooted. Like daredevil born again scenario. I believe that whole justice league will be recast, seeing the flow of things. But a clean slate is necessary to build a new world with consistent characters and tonality.... Superman was a completely different character in BvS and JL, WW was a different personality in all three films, and Batman was messed in consistency of the character too... What I'm getting at is, in a decade of DC, the character personalities haven't been consistent and felt very tonally off, so we need a fresh slate to build up the DC army right from scratch.

Soft rebooting Cavill's character would have been way better. Like seriously, having a live action adaptation of "Superman vs the elite" with superman deciding to have a no kill rule and taking into account that he had killed Zod, and trying to become a better hero. Gunn doesn't usually writes characters without sarcasm or quipping; like characters with emotional sincerity are not usually his forte. He isn't a guy who stops and snickers at his villains' name like how Hal or Barry might do. Hopefully, they adapt the Grant Morrison year one superman in the new 52 and let him grow from there.

There has never been a single moment like Yondu’s funeral in any of Snyder’s movies. Not even for Superman when he died. Yondu wasn’t even a central character but Gunn built enough of a backstory and an emotional attachment that there were people actually crying in the theater during his sendoff.
