Cutler and Frith are definitely the most fun to watch at this show. Cutler because of the uniquely animated yet elegant way he plays the drums and Frith because he’s playing a different instrument every time the camera is on him.
@avi_s0ncin0 Жыл бұрын
@@iamdamosuzuki_ I wish the camera was on Frith more though. Especially on that incredible guitar section at the crescendo outro section of Living In the Heart of the Beast. Most of the time the camera seems to be focused on Krause or Cutler…not surprising as they’re also the ones making the most stank faces. Hi Damo

IMHO Henry Cow is not only the best band in the history of progressive rock but quite possibly the culmination of the whole avant rock thing. I simply love this guys, true 'musical heroes' for me, alongside Glenn Branca, Anton Webern, Captain Beefheart, Anthony Braxton and Orthrelm. Well, in this concert recorded in Switzerland (Vevey) in 1976, with splendid audio and image quality, we have the british formation in its intermediate period, where to the band's initial sonic blend (compositional exercises inspired by the Second Viennese School + free jazz infused improvisations + electroacoustic experiments) is added the anarchic spirit of the bretchian expressionist cabaret. Simply essential, perless and timeless stuff.

It's interesting to see them in this formation. Founding member and bassist John Greaves had recently departed from the group. Georgie Born was pretty new and struggling to fit in. Dagmar Krause would break down not much later, then leave the band. A lot of internal conflict happening in the band's day-to-day. But when they were playing together, that was all that mattered.

Chris Cutler is self-taught. Everything about the way he plays the drums is "wrong." That doesn't make him a good drummer or a bad drummer necessarily, but it does make his style totally unique and unmistakable, and in my opinion it's a perfect fit for Henry Cow.

Henry Cow's been a fave of mine since college and this is a superlative concert. But the cinematography is kind of insufferable. I can deal with the claustrophobic closeups and incessant slow pans, but WTF with the interpolated stills and slo-mo's? I mean, it's a live concert, for crying out loud. The music's avant-garde enough, thanks ;)
