The “Lincoln letter inking proletarian” line when Marx introduces himself is a reference to a personal telegram Karl Marx sent to President Lincoln after the Civil War, congratulating him on freeing the slaves.

10:46 He’s calling Ford out as a teetotaler. “Your Model-T total” is a better bar than it’ll be given credit for, assuming my inference about which side of politics he was on is correct. Given ERB’s distinct lack of incorrectness with their bars, I assume that the T-total is an intentional triple. 1: Model T. 2: Cars get “totaled.” 3: Teetotal. Solid triple with a weak finish, unless we’re missing an extra layer on “lack of style.”
@wordlife94 Жыл бұрын

After the third watch i noticed the 'stateless' line from Ford at 15:25 could also be how Marx should 'state' (as in say) 'less', little pun there but nice!
@voicedubgaming2286 Жыл бұрын
See that's what I thought too bc I was like "What could the connection be there? Oh bc state as a a verb means 'to say' so he's saying Marx talks too much"
@azurerogue3633 Жыл бұрын
In truth, it is a triple entendre, 1. Telling him to talk less. 2. Karl Marx was banned from several countries, and therefore was not allowed within their states. 3. In his writing Marx wrote about how a communist society would be a stateless society.
@pragmaticclarity30349 ай бұрын
@@azurerogue3633 This is a common misphrasing of Marx, Marx never actually says what a communist society would look like governmentally, just that there will be a dictatorship of the proletariat during the intermediary phase. It's more of an entendre towards other socialist/communist beliefs at the time, like Bukharin reading of Marx or Kropotkin.

The Marx/Lincoln line was a reference to Marx writing a letter to Lincoln concerning slavery
@fadeemblem7665 Жыл бұрын
Ford's first verse was really strong, but he kinda used up all his ammo in it, and the only strong punch he had in later verses was the hypocrisy bar about Engels bankrolling Marx. Meanwhile Marx started off slower, but was hitting Ford decently well throughout the battle, and had a really strong ending with the Nazi factory/Auschwitz line. I'd give it to Karl Marx overall, especially since a couple of Ford's disses in the middle (the beard shampoo and the Hot Karl line) felt pretty weak-sauce.

Ford could only go after his looks and personal attacks cause he (like many Americans) didn't really understand what his(Marx) books were about. Marx made a fantastic rebuttal to the claim about being funded by a "capitalist". Although I don't know if I'd actually call Engels a real capitalist since he was as mentioned a huge supporter of Marx's visions.

Not to be that guy, but communism, even as a far leftist that isn't an actual communist, it's not really that comparable to a hivemind necessarily. Also, Engels wasn't a capitalist. His father was, owned a factory or smth. Engels himself had an organisational/managerial position. Definitely well paid, but nevertheless a wage worker.

@@СашаВолков-ф5н I'm not really a comrade, as I said, I'm not a communist. Socialist yes (meaning that all political spheres of society, so economy+legislation+administration+culture should be based on maximum freedom and the absolute will of the population making up a society), but in terms of economic system itself I would describe myself as a quasi-communist/councilist when it comes to things like natural resources, key industries and services/enterprises of public interest, and market socialism (genuine market socialism, not social democracy) for everything else, meaning full freedom of enterprise aside from illegitimate exploitation. Also, I'm not a comrade because I don't find myself loving or liking or caring to any special extent for anyone with simmilar political views because of said political views (not saying I'm opposed to doing so necessarily). We have common interests and goals, not necessarily common likes and dislikes. We're allies, not friends.
@СашаВолков-ф5н2 ай бұрын
@@Varkhal218 1. Comrade isn't used exclusively to refer to communists, but I get why you'd say that. 2. I belive that a society where people who work are the ones who own the factories they are working in, as well as the products they make, will be a much better society. The free market can work, but only if there isn't a way for a small group of companies to dictate the prices. As long as the majority of the workers don't become obsessed with profit, socialism's free market will actually be free. 3. Good point actually. I'll have to think about that. But I (at least do my best to) maintain a positive attitude towards everyone, not just people with similar views.

@@СашаВолков-ф5н 1) well I guess semantics are genuinely up to personal tastes 2) sure, no argument from me here 3) yeah, well, when I stopped lying to myself about some artificial ideology of enthusiastic solidarity actually accepted the fact that I have a great deal of distaste for human beings in general and hate for humanity in most of it's forms, with very few exceptions in terms of either individual people or general traits of humanity, and be honest about my political stance as simply wanting to live free and have the power that I should have in human society without being opressed by parasitic tyrants or their lackeys, and realising I cannot do this alone beyond escapism and living as much as possible outside the laws and systems of man, thus deciding to align myself with the social forces and like-minded people, life was better. 9:00 the problem with that line for me is that it’s very close to the “Crony capitalism” defense of capitalism that is, “capitalism as a system isn’t inherently flawed, and exploit its individual people that make it turn out that way.” And that would be Marx shooting himself in the foot since his critique was of capitalism as a system, not individual people.
@ravenfrancis1476 Жыл бұрын
Not really, because exploitation is inherently baked into capitalism in a way its not for communism.
@juliank6793 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, both sides don't believe the failed versions of their ideologies are the real forms of their ideologies that they idealize. All ideas are hard to actualize, especially political ideas. Personally, I think marx has a better response to this, because the difference between "communism" the goal of a stateless society, and "socialism" the ideology and transition period trying to get to communism is inherently baked into it. Capitalism isn't an ideology written about and then actualized, it was something developed over time mostly by coincidence and necessity that writers later tried to interpret through writing. Marx had the ability to lay out exactly what his ideology should be like, so there's a lot of ways to justify calling failures of it "not real communism."
@chene-aurelgaudreau1072 Жыл бұрын
If Marx saw that line he would probably have immediately wrote an entire essay on why he hates it, and why only a naive “utopian socialist” or “idealist” would say such a thing.
@aalmarashi628 Жыл бұрын
The response to this would be: Capitalist is a system which promotes individualism, exploitation, and greed. It is a system wherein there is always someone on top, which therefore is a system of power and control, which therefore is a system where a fact.
@volvodgio Жыл бұрын
Communism is a system where the individual is seen as an equal. It strives for the disassembilation of social classes. Capitalism is a system that makes everyone a competitor to each other. The individual is to strive for more control over the system by themselves. Capitalism is a stepping stone to achieve true communism, if humankind were efficient enough to achieve such as a collective. However, humankind's greed corrupted any form of communism that was attempted to be established. Communism is a utopia, a paradise that is far away. Capitalism, which is the system that promotes human greed, promotes human competition, is the only system that we'll be able to achieve efficiently in the foreseeable future. I doubt it that we'll be able to see the perfection of a societal structure, which is no direct authoritan structure at all, but made by the collective humankind. Marx was a dreamer who tried planting his seed. However, that plant was taken and crossed with many other plants, creating a mixture of many traits. I am sure that you all know about the rules of inheritance. Let's say that the mindset of communism is spread across the world. But the mindset is mixed with other traits and other ideologies. Certain groups create their own ideology and call it communism, socialism... but they truly miss the original point. If we were to establish communism in its originally intended form, every human with their own ideology would need to accept the mindset. It is basically impossible to achieve that. With so many traits that were inherited, it is impossible to achieve the original state within everyone. Communism is stateless, stateless in theory, and stateless in practice. It is a dream, unable to be realized because it is outside of human nature. Capitalism is the most perfect form of construct that we are able to establish with our current capabilities. Marx himself described it as a stepping stone towards communism that would be trashed as soon as it outlived its purpose. But, likely to his knowledge, capitalism burns itself into the human structure and is almost impossible to get rid of. Because when you're well of within a capitalist society, you hold all the power. The ones that suffer through the system are unable to fight back against that if they won't connect. And we can see how well that works.

The Brazilian factory town Ford attempted to set up failed miserably bc he tried to enforce the same lifestyle requirements on workers there as he did in the US (no alcohol, no gambling, good Christian values etc) and the Brazilian workers eventually unionized and revolted so badly the Brazilian army had to be sent in to calm things down and prevent anymore destruction of property. In general, the reason I think Marx took this battle is he had much more evidence in his bars of all of the various ways Ford was an appalling person. Such as his private gestapo that enforced his lifestyle requirements for his workers (which included a requirement for wives to not work if workers wanted their five bucks a day btw), authorizing the execution of unarmed workers protesting for better wages, his selfish underhanded manipulation of the company to sabotage Edsel, and most of all his antisemetic notions and support of the Nazis. Whether you agree that communism is a viable system or not, Ford didnt really have much ammo to throw at Marx personally just the dictators who abused his ideology and that Marx was poor and smelled bad which almost helps Marx’s verses since it highlights the class differences between them.

Yes, Ford pushed his factories and pushed his agendas.....but he was also one of the driving forces behind 40 hour work week, and despite being Anti-Semitic helped the Jews fight to get Sunday's off. Marx, for all the issues that arose when others got ahold of his ideology, actually believed what he preached and pushed for fairer life for others. He literally put his money where his mouth was.

I have to disagree with your call on the winner. Ford starts off the battle by saying he's going to "tear your ideology apart". Indeed there's no other reason to have Ford and Marx battle. Ford's first verse is his strongest, and he does make a couple of early bars aimed at Marx's ideology. The Bread lines bar, and the bar about body bags from brutal dictators are on point. Unfortunately, Marx reverses that second bar: "Oh, some terrible people took my ideology long after I was dead and misused it to kill a ton of people? Well you were buddy buddy with Hitler when you were alive, loved what he was doing, and helped him do it." The rest of Ford's bars for the whole rest of the battle boil down to "I'm rich, so I'm cool!" and "You're poor, so you have problems poor people have, like being sick and dirty or having children die from lack of medical care, lulz!" Ford's pen-game on these is great, but they lack variety, and they all play into Marx's ideology! Meanwhile Marx goes after everything about Ford: his working conditions, his weird controlling culture, his killing protestors, his antisemitism, his terrible effect on the environment (which was known even in the 19th century), his destruction of his son, and more. Marx wins on variety, deepness of cuts, and actually attacking ideology.

If you think Ford won you need to re-analyze everything being said. Ford mostly only went after personal attacks like his looks or that he was poor because like many (especially Americans) he(Ford) was misrepresenting was communism(Marxism) was all about. If you have to lie and misrepresent your opponent while also being on the wrong side of history you definitely lost by a lot. Ford's punches were very weak for reasons stated above. I liked Marx's line "You didn't read sh*t." Cause it was not only directed at Ford but everyone else who continually mislabels what his ideologies were about.

Nah. Henry was not in the match at all after the Factory lines, and to clear up your memory, It was Ford Workers being shot, by Ford hired Security.
