I’m 55 years old and had same problem with seeing the sights on my Henry 44 mag. I got the skinner rear peep and painted front bead bright orange like you did and it helped my shooting tremendously. I actually killed a deer this year at 90 yds with it.

I've gone with the High Viz green fiber optic front sight and kept my rear Buckhorn on ALL of my Henrys. This one little change has TRANSFORMED the ability to pick up a good sight picture out to 75 yards. Anything farther and I'll put on a scope.

That sounds pretty much like where I’m at. Where are hunt? I don’t expect a longer shot and 75 yards. Shooting targets 75 yards is a good distance. Thanks a lot for watching and leaving a comment! I really appreciate it!

I shot again just yesterday and I think I’m sticking to the TruGlows! It’s like night and day with the speed of getting on target and accuracy over the Buckhorns! The Buckhorns take too long to get lined up with the little rear notch and determine the shot.

I couldn't focus on the rear sight and the front sight on my Henry, which is also in 44 mag. I tried the fiber optics and it made all the difference I needed. I used the green on the front sight and the red on the rear and it worked for me. I got about ten years on ya and was starting to think my rifle days were numbered. I also used the Ranger Points on a different Henry Rifle but I still had trouble seeing the brass front sight. I polished it and it helped but it doesn't last very long. I think the model paint is gonna work just fine. I used the largest peep sight on the rear and it is still plenty accurate. I like the way it fits the receiver like it was made that way.

I have several lever guns (22, 45 Colt, 357 Mag) & I've installed red fiber optic front sights on all of them. It's so much easier to see with my 75 yr old eyes. I've also installed peep rear sights on all these for the same reason.

That might be a great combination! I was considering that myself . In fact the TruGlow fiber optic sights were bought for the front sight to use with a peep. But when I put the front and rear set on it popped and was great! I won’t rule a peep out in the future, but for now I’m happy as a pig in slop! Thank you for your comment my friend!

I have the same on my H001 and it’s just a fun gun, and they make it much more fun. I shoot in my backyard in the evening mostly and it’s full of trees - the stock sights are too hard to pick up - it was a no brainer 20 dollar upgrade

I just ordered the same sight for my Henry 357 Big Boy. Thanks for bringing this product to my attention. I like the looks of your Truglo sights much better than the Ranger Point ones, plus mounting those on my brass receiver had me on the fence as well as the cost. It is pretty hard to beat having the Truglo setup sent to my door for $77 and my rifle will still look like a stock Henry for the most part. I read on the Henry Forum that Henry actually recommends the Truglo sights.

I finished making up my mind today. I’m leaving the TruGlow sights on. I can consistently group 2 inches at 50 yards and can group the inside of a paper plate at 80. That might get better.

One of the reasons I bought a Henry X 30-30 was it has the fiber optic sights already on it. Always wanted a Henry lever action rifle and a 30-30. Since Marlins are hard to find, I found this Henry and I'm very happy with it.

There are so many options with Henry I had a hard time making up my mind! I decided to go with the Big Boy classic because it was the one that originally caught my eye. The semi buckhorns were something that just didn’t work for me! It would be nice if Henry gave a few options in sights across the product line. I really love the fiber optics now! Thanks for your comment!

Same reasons I bought the X model in 3030. However I did end up mounting a Holosun 507 red dot on it. Put a Henry 44mag carbine on layaway yesterday. Stores were close to closing and didn’t have time for the paperwork so it’s waiting until I can buy it. But I’m looking at other options other than the buckhorn. So far I’m looking at the Hi Viz fiber optic sights and the skinner peep. For now I think I’m going to hold off on a red dot. Thing about the buckhorn is the riser for the sight had already fallen off in the box. Hate to grab the gun someday and only to find that’s missing and now my sight is off.

Agreed! The Bullseye sight is like an old antiaircraft sight. Fast target acquisition. Naturally aligns with the eye. And I'm in my 70's now, and had cataract surgery in both eyes. I have no issues with the stock sights on my leverguns, but on my "bunny gun", an old Glenfield model60, that Bullseye sight is great.

I’ve talked to several people who have had the same issue,, and watched many KZbin videos about the front sights after switching to skinner sights. It seems that if every dovetail in every rifle is machined to the same specs and every Skinner sight is machined to the same specs, either all the sights would work or all wouldn’t. I work in the world of CNC machining and have seen videos of the machining processes at Henry. I don’t believe the issue is at Henry. I think the issue is at Skinner and their QC or tolerances. Thanks for your comment!

Even in days gone by folk would alter their sights in europe they would take a miners lamp that used Calsium Carbide with water driping on it the resulting gas was flamable and gave a deep black smoke which they would coat their forsight with also the rear sight if the original coating was worn off.

I think I prefer the looks of the sights on your Big Boy more than the Ranger sights I was ready to purchase. I wanted to avoid the look of mounting something on my brass receiver, even if it was also brass. This keeps it closer to stock but with some somewhat subtle change to improve the rifle as a tool. A subtle change that might make the difference in bringing dinner home to your family or not.

I'm 56 now, and talk about blessed eyesight, I need cheaters but I'm still living without prescription eyewear! Anyway, thus far, I still can't do Hi-Vis sights. I just don't like 'em. My beef is that I can pinpoint my exact target spot. Hi-Vis cover up a percentage of the target. The further away, the worse it is. If I'm aiming for a bullseye 50yds out, I still hit the paper, but at 100yds, it's hard to nail those tighter groups when you can't focus on the center of the bullseye. It's like I'm creating a new bullseye, and I'm... just not impressed. My solution has been 1x magnification red dot, and back in 2014, I shot a hard running 8pt buck @30yds with it. With the red dot, I can adjust the bead diameter and target acquisition is lightning fast because there is no magnification. I was pushing a patch of woods when that 8-pointer came over the ridge. All I had was seconds, to determine the rate of speed, direction, an upcoming shoot lane, and quick evaluation of possible dangers beyond the target once in the shooting lane. All of this was less than 3 seconds. Ithaca 20ga hit it in the lower neck on the same height line as the vitals and it dropped from a blown windpipe in 35yds. I'm not that quick with the old irons or the Hi-Vis. The red dot, for me, has been a much better choice. I still hunt the old irons on a handful of rifles because if I have the time, like I do with unsuspecting varmints or treed squirrels, I can still put the irons together for a good kill shot. I've never been charged by a bear. I've had standoffs, but never a charge, so I can't speak for that situation, but when bear hunting, the open sights of the 35Rem still do just fine from the blind. If they become too difficult, I'll break out the Ithaca. Last, I also use Testors paints for little touch up/accent jobs! It's never failed me.

@@Hunting4Hookers I'm not sure what design the Sig red dot is, but mine is like a little juice can, and I want to say about 40mm diameter. I've tried a smaller window version on a Buckmark Hunter and didn't like it at all. It was hard to locate the dot let alone put the dot on the target. By the time I sighted it, I took it back off. But the bigger, cylindrical style, I have had zero issues with that set up. Hope it helps!

... FALSE: scopes & brush hunting don't mix ... scopes are good for thick brush hunting IF you choose the right scope ... the scope on my Marlin 1895GS is a Leupold VX3 1.5-5x20mm and I've had no trouble "acquiring" live game targets before they disappear into the foliage with the scope on low setting ... the FAD today among the youtube gurus seems to favour packing huge cumbersome culvert pipe sized variable scopes with lots of "zoomies" on light hunting rifles ... if you're dragging a hunting rifle with a huge 5-25 power scope through the thick brush where I hunt I guarantee you're going to finish the hunt a) TIRED & b) UNSUCCESSFUL
@Hunting4Hookers
@Hunting4Hookers 4 ай бұрын
There are some great scope options that do a good job. “For me” and the thick mountain Laurel thickets I hunt in, there is no way possible to acquire animals on a regular basis faster with a scope than with fiber optic open sights. A lot of it is based on what you shoot and practice with. Shooting sights is far less common in these times because folks have gotten used to scopes and don’t use or practice with sights anymore. Thanks for your comment and opinions! It’s great for conversation and that’s what I love.
